A Call for Compassion: How You Can Help Get Multiple Myeloma Added to the Social Security Administration's Compassionate Allowances List.

Multiple myeloma (MM) and its treatment impose profound physical, psychosocial, and financial burdens on those living with the disease. Given its predictable and often progressive debility, many individuals with MM are unable to maintain employment and must rely on Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) to meet medical and living expenses. Yet, SSDI adjudication is frequently prolonged and unsuccessful on initial application, compounding financial and emotional distress. The Social Security Administration's (SSA) Compassionate Allowances (CAL) initiative was created to expedite disability

Protocol of a randomized controlled trial to test the effects of client-centered Representative Payee Services on antiretroviral therapy adherence among marginalized people living with HIV.

BACKGROUND: Client-Centered Representative Payee (CCRP) is an intervention modifying implementation of a current policy of the US Social Security Administration, which appoints organizations to serve as financial payees on behalf of vulnerable individuals receiving Social Security benefits. By ensuring beneficiaries' bills are paid while supporting their self-determination, this structural intervention may mitigate the effects of economic disadvantage to improve housing and financial stability, enabling self-efficacy for health outcomes and improved antiretroviral therapy adherence. Supplemental Security Income for Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults With Disabilities and the Role of the Pediatrician: Policy Statement.

The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program remains an important source of financial support for low-income families of children, adolescents, and young adults with disabilities. In most states, SSI eligibility also qualifies children for the state Medicaid program, providing access to health care services. The Social Security Administration (SSA), which administers the SSI program, considers a child disabled under SSI if there is a medically determinable physical or mental impairment or combination of impairments that results in marked and severe functional limitations. The impairment(s) m

Helping adults who are homeless gain disability benefits: the SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery (SOAR) program.

OBJECTIVE: Approval rates for first-time applications for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) among adults who are homeless can be as low as 10%. This study examined approval rates among applicants who were assisted by SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery (SOAR), a federal initiative to increase access to disability benefits among people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and who have mental illness or other co-occurring disorders. METHODS: Data were collected in 37 states that had participated in SOAR for at least one year. RESULTS:

Long-Term Effects of Evidence-Based Supported Employment on Earnings and on SSI and SSDI Participation Among Individuals With Psychiatric Disabilities.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines the long-term effects of evidence-based supported employment services on three vocational outcomes: labor force participation, earnings, and attainment of Social Security Administration (SSA) nonbeneficiary status through suspension or termination of disability cash payments due to work (NSTW). METHOD: Data from 449 individuals with psychiatric disabilities who participated in a multisite controlled trial of supported employment were matched to SSA data over a 13-year period (2000-2012) following supported employment services. Long-term outcomes were analyzed us

Association of Carcinoembryonic Antigen with Mortality in an Insurance Applicant Population.

Objectives.- To quantify the mortality risks associated with elevated levels of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). Background.- Carcinoembryonic antigen is cell surface glycoprotein and has been associated with the presence of high grade or metastatic cancers of the colon as well as other malignant and non-malignant disease. Prior publications have demonstrated the utility of CEA levels in the determination of mortality risk in life insurance applicants. The aim of this paper is to further characterize this risk with a larger set of data containing additional person-years of follow-up, more outco

Medical-legal issues regarding patients with low back pain.

Low back pain can present legal issues that require input from the patient's treating physicians. Because low back pain can lead to partial or complete disability, either on a short-term or long-term basis, patients may be unable to earn a living, which may make it necessary for patients to seek government aid, personal insurance benefits, or insurance benefits through workers compensation or even, when the low back pain was caused by an incident that was the fault of a third party, through a personal injury claim lawsuit. This article reviews the legal issues relevant to low back pain.

Life-long sustained mortality advantage of siblings of centenarians.

Although survival to old age is known to have strong environmental and behavioral components, mortality differences between social groups tend to diminish or even disappear at older ages. Hypothesizing that surviving to extreme old age entails a substantial familial predisposition for longevity, we analyzed the pedigrees of 444 centenarian families in the United States. These pedigrees included 2,092 siblings of centenarians, whose survival was compared with 1900 birth cohort survival data from the U.S. Social Security Administration. Siblings of centenarians experienced a mortality advantage

A qualitative analysis of the meaning of aging for women with disabilities with policy implications.

This is a report of a hermeneutic phenomenological study of the meaning of aging for women with childhood-onset disabilities due to the effects of paralytic polio. Twenty-five women aged 55-65 years were interviewed 2 to 4 times regarding their life course experiences and the meaning they assigned to aging. Field notes, audiotaped interviews, life course charts, and demographics were used in thethematic analysis that produced 5 themes: Bodies Change, Disrupted Meaning, The Unpredictibility of Aging, Slowing Down, and Changing Perspective. Overall, the findings indicate that the experiences of

Piloting an empirical approach to link the international classification of functioning, disability, and health to job demand classification.

BACKGROUND: The Social Security Administration has a thorough disability claims process, though one goal is to process claims more efficiently. This pilot described the creation and trial of a web-based tool to assist this process. OBJECTIVE: To empirically link the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) model to the Occupational Information Network (O*NET) with a self-reported activity measure (physical domain). METHODS: ICF Activity domains and item difficulty calibrations were obtained from a self-reported ICF-Activity Measure. Three work/disability exper

Vital Status Ascertainment for a Historic Diverse Cohort of U.S. Women.

BACKGROUND: Studies linking large pregnancy cohorts with mortality data can address critical questions about long-term implications of gravid health, yet relevant US data are scant. We examined the feasibility of linking the Collaborative Perinatal Project, a large multiracial U.S. cohort study of pregnant women (n = 48,197; 1959-1966), to death records. METHODS: We abstracted essential National Death Index (NDI) (1979-2016) (n = 46,428). We performed a linkage to the Social Security Administration Death Master File through 2016 (n = 46,450). Genealogists manually searched vital status in 201

The Long-Term Health Implications of Marital Disruption: Divorce, Work Limits, and Social Security Disability Benefits Among Men.

We provide new evidence on the long-term impact of divorce on work disability among U.S. men. Using data from the 2004 Survey of Income and Program Participation linked to U.S. Social Security Administration records, we assess the relationship between divorce and subsequent self-reports of work limitations and the receipt of federal disability benefits. The examination of self-reports and administrative records of medically qualified benefits provides dual confirmation of key relationships. We compare men who experienced a marital dissolution between 1975 and 1984 with continuously married men

Financial Capability: Clinicians' Assessment of Beneficiaries With Dual Diagnoses.

OBJECTIVE: Adults with mental health disorders whose ability to work is sufficiently impeded are entitled to financial supports from the Social Security Administration. Beneficiaries determined to be incapable of managing these funds are supposed to be assigned a representative payee to assist beneficiaries in meeting their needs. However, patterns of payee assignment suggest that payee assignment is impacted by factors other than those the Social Security Administration instructs clinicians to consider. In this study, we tested the association between clinicians' judgments of their clients' f

Incomes and Outcomes: Social Security Disability Benefits in First-Episode Psychosis.

OBJECTIVE: Social Security Administration (SSA) disability benefits are an important source of income for people with psychoses and confer eligibility for health insurance. The authors examined the impact of coordinated specialty care on receipt of such benefits in first-episode psychosis, along with the correlates and consequences of receiving them. METHOD: The Recovery After an Initial Schizophrenia Episode-Early Treatment Program (RAISE-ETP) study, a 34-site cluster-randomized trial, compared NAVIGATE, a coordinated specialty care program, to usual community care over 2 years. SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery (SOAR): Disability Application Outcomes Among Homeless Adults.

OBJECTIVE: The SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery (SOAR) program has been shown to increase access to Supplemental Security Income and Social Security Disability Insurance benefits among homeless adults. However, little empirical data exist on how or for whom SOAR achieves successful application outcomes. This study investigated applicant and application characteristics associated with disability application outcomes among homeless adults. METHODS: Secondary data on 6,361 SOAR-assisted applications were obtained. Multilevel models investigated between-applicant differences in application

Using registry data to characterize the incidence and causes of blindness in Oregon.

In the United States, there is no reliable data to describe the prevalence of eye diseases leading to visual impairment and little active surveillance to address this knowledge gap. Data that is readily available from many state blind registries may provide helpful information on trends and causes of blindness. We analyzed new registrations with the Oregon Commission for the Blind (OCB) and Oregon State Department of Administrative Services (DAS) from 1961 to 2016 for causes of and trends in blindness. Persons with blindness self-refer into the OCB registry and the Oregon State Department of A

Mortality of workers employed in the manufacture of chlordane and heptachlor.

A retrospective mortality study has been carried out on workers employed in the manufacture of chlordane and heptachlor between 1946 and 1976. The study group was comprised of 1403 white males who worked for more than three months at either of the two plants in the United States now producing these compounds. Information on deaths among terminated employees was obtained from the Social Security Administration and supplemented by information collected by another investigator by individual follow-up. There were 113 deaths observed in the group, compared to 157 expected, giving a standardized mor
