Keratoconus severity identification using unsupervised machine learning.

We developed an unsupervised machine learning algorithm and applied it to big corneal parameters to identify and monitor keratoconus stages. A big dataset of corneal swept source optical coherence tomography (OCT) images of 12,242 eyes acquired from SS-1000 CASIA OCT Imaging Systems in multiple centers across Japan was assembled. A total of 3,156 eyes with valid Ectasia Status Index (ESI) between zero and 100% were selected for the downstream analysis. Four hundred and twenty corneal topography, elevation, and pachymetry parameters (excluding ESI Keratoconus indices) were selected. The algorit

Prehospital Risk Stratification Using Unsupervised Machine Learning in STEMI.

BACKGROUND: ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) exhibits substantial clinical heterogeneity complicating prehospital risk stratification. Traditional risk assessment tools often fail to capture the complexity of this condition. Machine learning offers opportunities to identify complex clinical patterns not readily apparent during prehospital care. AIM: To identify distinct phenotypes in STEMI patients using unsupervised machine learning algorithms based on prehospital parameters, and to determine their association with short-term mortality and cardiovascular outcomes. METHODS: Prospec

Unsupervised machine learning to explore inflammation following cardiopulmonary bypass.

IntroductionCardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) often induces systemic inflammatory reaction syndrome (SIRS), affecting postoperative outcome. We aimed to explore adaptive/maladaptive inflammation using unsupervised machine learning.MethodsWe conducted a post hoc analysis of 1908 adult patients who underwent elective cardiac surgery with CPB between June 2016 and June 2020 at a single institution. Patients were assessed for SIRS 12 hours post-surgery and clustered using the partitioning around medoids (PAM) algorithm based on Gower distance. The influence of SIRS on a composite o

Untangling profiles of postthrombotic syndrome using unsupervised machine learning.

Postthrombotic syndrome (PTS) is a chronic condition that can develop after deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and is diagnosed using the Villalta scale. This study applied unsupervised machine learning to investigate the heterogeneity of PTS among patients and within the Villalta scale. In 818 patients from the IDEAL DVT study, clustering identified 4 clinical profiles: (1) younger patients with provoked DVT, (2) women with joint pain, (3) men with isolated popliteal DVT, and (4) older men with diabetes and femoral vein involvement. Clustering of Villalta items revealed a distinction between signs an

Comparing storm resolving models and climates via unsupervised machine learning.

Global storm-resolving models (GSRMs) have gained widespread interest because of the unprecedented detail with which they resolve the global climate. However, it remains difficult to quantify objective differences in how GSRMs resolve complex atmospheric formations. This lack of comprehensive tools for comparing model similarities is a problem in many disparate fields that involve simulation tools for complex data. To address this challenge we develop methods to estimate distributional distances based on both nonlinear dimensionality reduction and vector quantization. Our approach automaticall

Peripheral bronchial identification on chest CT using unsupervised machine learning.

PURPOSE: To automatically identify small- to medium-diameter bronchial segments distributed throughout the lungs. METHODS: We segment the peripheral pulmonary vascular tree and construct cross-sectional images perpendicular to the lung vasculature. The bronchi running with pulmonary arteries appear as concentric rings, and potential center points that lie within the bronchi are identified by looking for circles (using the circular Hough transform) and rings (using a novel variable ring filter). The number of candidate bronchial center points are further reduced by using agglomerative hierarch

Complexity-based unsupervised machine learning for patient-specific VMAT quality assurance.

BACKGROUND: Patient-specific quality assurance (PSQA) is essential to guarantee the requested accuracy and safety of high-precision radiotherapy treatments. With the widespread adoption of modulated-intensity techniques, there is a growing need for increased operational efficiency. The potential of machine learning (ML) to accurately predict PSQA results has been investigated in recent years. In particular, plan complexity metrics have been used as model input features to be related to the PSQA outcome results in a number of supervised ML models. However, an unsupervised cluster analysis, able

Pulmonary emphysema subtypes defined by unsupervised machine learning on CT scans.

BACKGROUND: Treatment and preventative advances for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have been slow due, in part, to limited subphenotypes. We tested if unsupervised machine learning on CT images would discover CT emphysema subtypes with distinct characteristics, prognoses and genetic associations. METHODS: New CT emphysema subtypes were identified by unsupervised machine learning on only the texture and location of emphysematous regions on CT scans from 2853 participants in the Subpopulations and Intermediate Outcome Measures in COPD Study (SPIROMICS), a COPD case-control study,

Identifying multiple sclerosis subtypes using unsupervised machine learning and MRI data.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) can be divided into four phenotypes based on clinical evolution. The pathophysiological boundaries of these phenotypes are unclear, limiting treatment stratification. Machine learning can identify groups with similar features using multidimensional data. Here, to classify MS subtypes based on pathological features, we apply unsupervised machine learning to brain MRI scans acquired in previously published studies. We use a training dataset from 6322 MS patients to define MRI-based subtypes and an independent cohort of 3068 patients for validation. Based on the earliest a

Clustering Electrophysiological Predisposition to Binge Drinking: An Unsupervised Machine Learning Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The demand for fresh strategies to analyze intricate multidimensional data in neuroscience is increasingly evident. One of the most complex events during our neurodevelopment is adolescence, where our nervous system suffers constant changes, not only in neuroanatomical traits but also in neurophysiological components. One of the most impactful factors we deal with during this time is our environment, especially when encountering external factors such as social behaviors or substance consumption. Binge drinking (BD) has emerged as an extended pattern of alcohol consumption in teenag
