The sensitivity of transabdominal ultrasound in the diagnosis of ureterolithiasis.

OBJECTIVES: The ultrasonographic diagnosis of renal lithiasis colic is suggested by the existence of hydronephrosis, but the certainty is given by the direct visualization of the ureteral calculus. The aim of this study is to assess the performance of ultrasound in identifying ureteral calculi compared to other imaging methods (abdominal X-ray, urography and computed tomography). MATERIAL AND METHOD: We performed ultrasonographic examination (one or multiple examinations) in 217 patients with renal colic and ureterolithiasis. The calculus was identified by abdominal radiography, urography, co

Spontaneous proximal ureteric rupture secondary to ureterolithiasis.

We present the case of a 37-year-old lady who presented with severe colicky left sided flank pain associated with vomiting, chills and rigors. A non-contrast Computed Tomography of the Kidney Ureter and Bladder was performed which showed a 2-3 mm stone in the pelvic part of the left ureter. Following 2 days of conservative treatment she was still complaining of increasingly severe pain. A contrast computed tomography of the abdomen was performed which was suggestive of a perforation of the left collecting system. A diagnosis of spontaneous left proximal ureteric perforation secondary to urolit

Paravaginal tumor: ureterolithiasis in an ectopic ureter.

A case of long-standing, undetected urinary tract malformation is presented. Over a period of 15 years the patient had gone for regular examinations by a gynecologist because of paravaginal tumor and urinary incontinence. Operation revealed urinary calculi in an ectopic ureter. Despite of life-long continuous urinary incontinence, an i.v. pyelography was never offered. Embryology, symptoms and an investigation program concerning ectopic ureter are presented.

Ureterolithiasis after Cohen re-implantation--case report.

BACKGROUND: In the past decades, the widespread use of cross-trigonal ureteral reimplants for the treatment of children with vesicoureteral reflux has resulted in a large population of patients with transversely lying ureters. As this population gets older they will consequently be entering an age group at higher risk for stone and urothelial cancer formation. If ureteroscopy becomes necessary, the transverse position of the ureter makes ureteric access often impossible. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a young man who not only suffered from urolithiasis due to hyperparathyroidism, b

Partial adenine phosphoribosyltransferase deficiency detected by ureterolithiasis.

A 30-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of recurrent ureterolithiasis. She was suspected of having adenine phosphoribosyltransferase (APRT) deficiency based on the presence of 2,8-dihydroxyadenine (DHA) crystals in her urinary sediment, infrared spectrophotometric analysis of the excreted stone, and then the definitive diagnosis by gene analysis. A pedigree study indicated only a slight possibility of this disease in the family. From these results, we consider that urinary sediment and stone analysis should be used for screening while gene analysis should be employed for defin

Massive Ureterolithiasis in a Duplicated Ureter: A Case Report.

This case study presents a patient with massive ureterolithiasis in a duplicated ureter. A 31-year-old female patient underwent two dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scans, which incidentally revealed an ossific pelvic mass identified by a chiropractor. Pelvic X-ray and CT confirmed ureterolithiasis measuring 6.08 cm x 1.92 cm. Two months later, she developed left-sided lumbar pain radiating to the lower extremity, left lower quadrant abdominal pain, urinary urgency, and persistent fever requiring hospitalization. Clinical investigations, including urinalysis, blood work, and CT, confirm

Beyond ureterolithiasis: gamut of abnormalities affecting the ureter.

Nephrolithiasis is the most common condition involving the ureters. However, various other entities can affect the ureters, albeit less frequently. Imaging plays a crucial role in diagnosis, management, and follow-up of ureteral pathology. In the past decade, computed tomography urography has replaced traditional methods of ureteral imaging due to its high spatial resolution, multiplanar imaging, and rapid acquisition time. More recently, magnetic resonance urography has also been explored in evaluating ureteral abnormalities. In this review, we briefly discuss current imaging techniques used

Ureterolithiasis and papilloma formation in the ureter of a guinea pig.

A 5-year-old guinea pig with suspected urolithiasis was presented for radiology and ultrasound examinations of the abdomen. Radiographically, an irregular-shaped mineral opacity was detected in the area of the urinary bladder. Ultrasonographically, pyelectasia of the right kidney, hydroureter with an ureterolith cranial to a thickened ureter wall close to the ureterovesical junction, and a thickened urinary bladder wall were detected. Histopathologically, the thickened ureter wall was found to be a papilloma. The ureter calculus consisted of 100% calcite.

Mucosal folding in upper urinary pathways following ureterolithiasis.

Mucosal folds in the ureter or renal pelvis were demonstrated in 2 children and 27 adults with urolithiasis. It appeared from the sequence of events observed in these cases that the folds occurred in a redundant mucosa following an episode of mural stretching. Urinalysis, including bacterial culture in the majority of cases, showed infection in only 3 of the adults.

Asymptomatic Obstructive Ureterolithiasis Due to a Periureteral Venous Ring.

Background: Periureteral venous rings are a rare congenital anomaly involving the inferior vena cava (IVC) and the right ureter, where the ureter courses through a venous ring made by the duplication of the IVC during embryogenesis. This anatomic anomaly is also referred to as a transcaval ureter. Although most patients are asymptomatic and radiographic findings are incidental, some patients can be symptomatic. We present the first reported case of asymptomatic obstructive ureterolithiasis at the level of a periureteral venous ring that was effectively treated with endoscopic management. Case

Struvite ureterolithiasis associated with ureolytic bacterial pyelonephritis in a cat.

CASE SUMMARY: A 2-year-old female spayed domestic shorthair cat with a 1-week history of lethargy and dysorexia was presented to a veterinary teaching hospital. Physical examination identified severe left nephromegaly, hyperthermia and abdominal pain. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a left ureteral dilation due to obstruction by a ureterolith, associated with marked subcapsular effusion. Urinalysis showed alkaline urine with crystals of struvite. Culture of urine from the renal pelvis and the urinary bladder was positive for Staphylococcus pseudintermedius. An infected struvite ureterolith due t

Is Hydronephrosis on Ultrasound Predictive of Ureterolithiasis in Patients with Renal Colic?

PURPOSE: Renal ultrasound accurately identifies hydronephrosis but it is less sensitive than computerized tomography for the detection of ureterolithiasis. We investigated whether the presence of hydronephrosis on ultrasound was associated with a ureteral stone in patients who underwent both ultrasound and computerized tomography during the evaluation of acute renal colic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of patients from 3 institutions who were evaluated for acute renal colic by both ultrasound and computerized tomography between 2012 and 2015. Patients were inc

Placement of ureteral stents in three rabbits for the treatment of obstructive ureterolithiasis.

Management of ureteral obstruction with stenting is often associated with a lower rate of complications than ureterotomy in domestic carnivores, but this treatment has not been previously evaluated in rabbits. Three rabbits (7, 6 and 10 years old) were diagnosed with unilateral obstructive ureterolithiasis associated with hydronephrosis and hydroureter on abdominal ultrasound. Decreased overall renal function was confirmed in all three cases. Ureteral stents were placed retrogradely via cystotomy without complication in two cases and anterogradely via nephrostomy in the third case. Survival af
