Bacteriuria in the puerperium: an evaluation of methods for collecting urine specimens.

Five hundred and eighteen puerperal patients were screened for bacteriuria by examination of clean-catch, midstream urine specimens using the dip-slide cultivation technique. Bladder urine from 105 patients showing 10(4) or more bacteria per milliliter of midstrean urine was obtained by suprapubic bladder aspiration and cultivated, along with two consecutive midstream specimens. The bacteriologic results in these specimen categories are compared. Of 23 patients showing growth in the midstream samples compatible with a true bacteriuria, 18 had sterile puncture urine specimens. Consecutive conta

Diagnostic Precision: Exchanging Urinary Catheters Before Urine Specimen Collection to Reduce Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection.

BACKGROUND: Catheter-associated urinary tract infections are among the most prevalent and costly types of hospital-acquired infections. During the COVID-19 pandemic, growing numbers of critical care patients required indwelling urinary catheters, leading to higher infection rates. LOCAL PROBLEM: A critical care unit saw a 7-fold increase in the rate of catheter-associated urinary tract infection during the COVID-19 pandemic. A review of procedures showed that the current standard of care for preventing such infections was inadequate. In particular, patients who could not have indwelling urina

Accuracy of HPV Testing Using Self-collected Urine Compared With Physician-collected Cervical Specimen for HSIL or Worse.

OBJECTIVES: Self-collection is a strategy to facilitate HPV testing with the objective of eliminating cervical cancer, as set by the World Health Organization for completion by 2030. Using urine samples for HPV testing offers the advantages of being noninvasive and eliminating barriers to screening. However, concerns remain regarding its accuracy. Therefore, the meta-analysis focused on verifying the comparative effectiveness of HPV testing using self-collected urine specimens versus physician-collected cervical specimens. METHODS: A search of PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library database

Driving Access to Care: Use of Mobile Units for Urine Specimen Collection During the Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19) Pandemic.

Patients with substance use disorders (SUD) are at increased risk of both coronavirus disease-19 complications as well as exacerbations of their current conditions due to social distancing and isolation. Innovations that provide increased access to support substance use disorder patients may mitigate long-term sequelae associated with continued or renewed drug use. To improve patient access during the coronavirus disease-19 pandemic, we deployed a mobile unit to enable access to urine drug testing where needed for patients suffering from substance use disorder. Over a 3-week pilot program, 54

Comparison of self-collected meatal swabs with urine specimens for the diagnosis of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae in men.

PURPOSE: Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC) are common bacterial causes of sexually transmitted infections. Self-taken meatal swabs are a possible alternative to urine samples in testing for infection; however, the data surrounding their use are limited. METHODOLOGY: We carried out a prospective service review in a large sexual health clinic comparing urine samples and self-taken meatal swabs in men presenting for sexual transmissible infection screening for CT and GC with the BD Viper XTR system. RESULTS: We found an overall prevalence of 10.5 % for CT infections and

Clean-catching urine from pigs: A method for collecting quality specimens for urinalysis and microbiological culturing in a laboratory environment.

Urine is an important biological specimen for assessing various metabolic functions and drug clearance. In urinary tract infection research, urine is particularly important as urinary bacterial titres constitute the main diagnostic outcome for assessing the course of infection. Collecting uncontaminated urine samples from pigs can be done by bladder catheterization or suprapubic bladder aspiration, which are both laborious and invasive procedures that require the need for anaesthesia. To improve animal welfare and optimize urine sampling protocols, we developed a method of clean-catching midst

Comparing first-void urine specimens, self-collected vaginal swabs, and endocervical specimens to detect Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae by a nucleic acid amplification test.

We set out to determine the prevalences of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae by ligase chain reaction as well as to determine the prevalence of Trichomonas vaginalis by culture in a large and diverse national sample of non-health-care-seeking young women entering the military; we also sought to compare the abilities of three different techniques of collecting specimens (first-void urine, self-collected vaginal swab, and clinician-collected endocervical swab) to identify a positive specimen. A cross-sectional sample of young women was voluntarily recruited; as a part of their rout

Comparison of tampon and urine as self-administered methods of specimen collection in the detection of Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Trichomonas vaginalis in women.

Self-administered sampling techniques for the detection of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are particularly useful due to their ease of collection and better patient compliance. Urine specimens, and recently tampons, have been described as methods of specimen collection for the detection of some STDs in women. In this study, 660 women had both first-void urine (FVU) and tampon specimens analysed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the detection of Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Trichomonas vaginalis. Overall 6.5%, 10.1% and 17.9% of urine samples were positive whereas

A protocol for testing the stability of biochemical analytes. Technical document.

Stability of a measurand in a specimen is a function of the property variation over time in specific storage conditions, which can be expressed as a stability equation, and is usually simplified to stability limits (SLs). Stability studies show differences or even inconsistent results due to the lack of standardized experimental designs and heterogeneity of the chosen specifications. Although guidelines for the validation of sample collection tubes have been published recently, the measurand stability evaluation is not addressed. This document provides an easy guideline for the development of
