BACKGROUND: In the examinations of the appraisal commission of Northern Rhine the third most frequent urologic errors are ascertained after surgical procedures. In order to prevent them, it is adequate to evaluate their causes.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Urologic claims were examined that came before the appraisal commission for treatment errors of the Northern Rhine Physicians' Authority between 1975 and 2005. The results of the first 23 years were compared with those of the last 7 years. The judgment criteria were professional standards and required care.
RESULTS: Ninety-five treatment errors w

Atrophy of the testicles after herniorrhaphy is the most frequent (1.8%) urologic complication in general surgical procedures. In two-thirds of the cases the damage is bilateral. Tips are pointed out to avoid the loss of penile erection after amputation of the rectum or evisceration of the pelvis, as well as to avoid complications after Bernardi-Ivanissevich or Palomo procedures and sterilizing vasectomy.

PURPOSE: Day-of-surgery (DOS) cancellations negatively impact healthcare efficiency and patient outcomes. Early identification of at-risk patients is essential for timely perioperative interventions. This study aims to develop and evaluate a predictive model for DOS cancellations in urologic surgeries using a comprehensive set of electronic health record (EHR) derived variables, including social determinants of health (SDOH).
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study examined adult patients scheduled for non-emergent urologic procedures at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFGH), a m

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery (RALS) is evolving rapidly in the pediatric surgical field. The unique attributes of the robotic interface makes this technology ideal for children with congenital anomalies who often require reconstructive procedures. Furthermore, the system can generate extremely delicate movements in a confined working space such as the one generally found in the pediatric population. Herein, we critically review the current experience with RALS placing a special emphasis in children undergoing complex reconstructive surgical procedures worldwide.

Some urological procedures are regarded as minor or simple. As a result, these may be delegated to trainee surgeons to do. Occasionally nonmedical persons embark on some of the procedures such as male circumcision. Published serious complications from urological procedures considered minor or simple were identified from a Medline search (1966 through 1999) and reference lists of relevant publications. The operations regarded as minor were carried out by medical personnel of all grades as well as by nonmedical persons. The complications can be classified as mutilatory, infective, hemorrhagic, o

PURPOSE: Surgical site infections have been categorized by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services as "never events". The incidence of surgical site infection following laparoscopic urological surgery and its risk factors are poorly defined. We evaluated surgical site infection following urological laparoscopic surgery and identified possible factors that may influence occurrence.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who underwent transperitoneal laparoscopic procedures during a 4-year period by a single laparoscopic surgeon were retrospectively reviewed. Surgical site infections were ident

INTRODUCTION: Procedures involving the external genitalia are the most common pediatric urologic operations. Our group identified excess instrumentation for these cases to be a potential cause of operating room (OR) inefficiency at our large, freestanding pediatric hospital. This quality improvement (QI) initiative aimed to streamline surgical instrumentation for the most-performed pediatric urologic procedures at our hospital.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Six Sigma DMAIC methodology (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) guided this multidisciplinary, iterative QI effort. A stakeholder team u

This case study describes our initial laboratory experience using the SPIDER surgical system (TransEnterix, Morrisville, NC, USA) for laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS) urologic procedures and reports its first clinical application. The SPIDER system was tested in a laboratory setting and used for a clinical case of renal cyst decortication. Three tasks were performed during the dry lab session, and different urologic procedures were conducted in a porcine model. The time to complete the tasks and penalties were registered during the dry lab session. Perioperative outcomes and subject

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: An increasing number of urogenital schistosomiasis (UGS) is being diagnosed in Europe following the unprecedented migratory flux from Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This phenomenon represent a challenge for urologists working in a non-endemic area. The aim of this study is to describe the urological management and the surgical procedures of patients with UGS in a tertiary referral centre.
PATIENTS: All subjects from SAA diagnosed with UGS from January 2011 to November 2018 were enrolled retrospectively. Detailed data of patients with UGS undergoing to urological proced

PURPOSE: To assess the patient and identify the risk factors for infectious complications in conjunction with urological procedures and suggest a model for classification of the procedures.
METHOD: Review of literature, critical analysis of data and tentative model for reducing infectious complications.
RESULTS: Risk factors are bound to the patient and to the procedure itself and are associated with the environment where the healthcare is provided. Assuming a clean environment and sterile operation field, a five-level assessment ladder related to the patient and type of surgery is useful, c

Introduction : The transition from graduate medical school to residency is often considered as the most difficult transition by residents and supervisors. At our institution, a bootcamp for future surgical residents was set up in 2020. The aim of this study is to present the outcomes of the basic urological procedure workshops during this bootcamp. We specifically evaluated the contribution of video support to learning urethral and suprapubic catheter insertion through a comparative study. Methods: We were able to study two consecutive years of students (October 2023 and 2024). Starting in 202

INTRODUCTION: Informed consent is an essential component of surgical care; however, patients often struggle to fully understand procedures, associated risks and available alternatives. Factors such as preoperative anxiety, limited health literacy and the complexity of consent documents can further impair comprehension and information retention. The active informed consent (CIA) pathway, based on a Patient Educational Program that combines multimedia resources with a comprehension test, aims to enhance patient understanding, improve satisfaction and reduce medicolegal issues.
