The baubellum (os clitoridis) is a bone found in the clitoris of many female eutherian mammals and is homologous to the baculum in males. In contrast to the baculum, the baubellum has received very little attention regarding its morphological or interspecific diversity, or on hypotheses for its function. The presence of the baubellum in bears (Ursidae) has only been established and mentioned in the literature for the Ursus genus, and not for the other genera of bears. Moreover, no scaled photographs are available for baubella of this clade, and the sizes reported vary between sources. We hereb

The biliary bile acid composition of gallbladder bile obtained from six species of bears (Ursidae), the Giant panda, the Red panda, and 11 related carnivores were determined by reversed phase liquid chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Bile acids were conjugated solely with taurine (in N-acyl linkage) in all species. Ursodeoxycholic acid (3 alpha, 7 beta-dihydroxy-5 beta-cholan-24-oic acid) was present in all Ursidae, averaging 1-39% of biliary bile acids depending on the species; it was not detected or present as a trace constituent (< 0.5%) in all other species, including

In this work, we present the first detailed study of the normal meiotic karyotype of the brown bear based on the analysis of synaptonemal complexes. Microphotographs of the key stages of meiotic prophase I were obtained. The level of meiotic recombination, features of XY sex bivalent assembly during meiotic prophase I were analyzed. A refined SC karyotype ideogram was constructed, consisting of 37 pachytene bivalents: 36 autosomal bivalents and and XY sex bivalent. We report a rare finding in mammalian germinal cells - a polyploid spermatocyte after genome duplication in the brown bear Ursus a

A fragment of a bear skull with partially preserved dentition is descibed from the Lower Pleistocene deposits of the Taurida cave (Crimea). The presence of P1-P3, the structure of P4, and sizes of the cheek teeth enable the identification of the specimen as Ursus etruscus Cuvier, 1823. The new find is the first in Crimea and the entire Russia and is of great interest due to rarity of this species in the Pleistocene of Eastern Europe.

Carnivorous wild mammals often harbor a high diversity and high prevalence of parasites, many of which possess zoonotic potential or are of relevance for domestic animal health. In this Chapter, we summarize studies on endoparasites of the most common wild canids (red and arctic foxes, golden jackals, coyotes, grey wolves and raccoon dogs), felids (lynxes and European wildcats) and bears (brown and black bears) in the Palearctic and Nearctic regions since the turn of the millennium. Overall, the red fox stands out as the best-studied species, with the highest endoparasite diversity reported, a

The mandible of a gigantic bear from the terminal Miocene of the Kosyakino quarry in the Stavropol Territory of Russia is described. The presence of a premasseteric fossa of the mandible and characteristic features in the structure of the lower cheek teeth (P4 with posterior cingulid cusp and without medial ridge, M1 with elongated paraconid, large metaconid, double entoconid and developed mesoconid, and M1-M2 without cingulids) allow to attribute the studied specimen to the genus Huracan and to erect a new species, H. borissiaki.

An M1 tooth of Asian black bear (Ursus (Euarctos) thibetanus G. Cuvier, 1823) was found in deposits of the Tetyukhinskaya cave (Middle Sikhote-Alin, 44°35'N, 135°36'E). This finding is the first reliable evidence of Asian black bear's presence in Pleistocene of Primorye. Its morphological and morphometric descriptions are given. The period of inhabitation of U. (E.) thibetanus determined based on the radiocarbon date obtained during the study of the tooth, is 39 874 ± 133 BP (NSK-850, UGAMS-21786), which corresponds to the middle of Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3) of Late Pleistocene. Dirofilaria ursi Yamaguti, 1941 (Spirurida: Onchocercidae) was originally described from the Japanese black bear Ursus thibetanus japonicus and later reported from the American black bear U. americanus in North America. Both D. ursi and D. ursi-like species have been implicated in human zoonosis in Japan and North America. This study aimed to revise the morphological characteristics of D. ursi in Japan and determine its phylogeny using multi-locus sequence analyses. We investigated the genotypes of Wolbachia endosymbionts harbored by Japanese D. ursi and compared them with those of American D.

An example of lymphoblastic lymphosarcoma was found in a 7-year-old male brown bear (Ursus arctos) that died after having a 7-month history of depression, anorexia and watery diarrhea. Grossly the mesenteric lymph nodes were enlarged to approximately 4 to 6 times their normal size and histologically diagnosed as lymphoblastic lymphosarcoma. The small intestinal mucosa was corrugated and had severe mural thickening due to infiltrated neoplastic cells. Hepatic metastasis was also noted. This is the first reported case of lymphosarcoma in Ursidae in Korea. As an incidental finding, endogenous lip

The aim of this study was to analyse the bite forces of seven species from three carnivore families: Canidae, Felidae, and Ursidae. The material consisted of complete, dry crania and mandibles. A total of 33 measurements were taken on each skull, mandible, temporomandibular joint, and teeth. The area of the temporalis and masseter muscles was calculated, as was the length of the arms of the forces acting on them. Based on the results, the bite force was calculated using a mathematical lever model. This study compared the estimated areas of the masticatory muscles and the bending strength of th

An approximately 30-year-old intact female Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus) was presented for annual examination and a history of ptyalism. A large 9.5 cm × 5 cm × 5 cm, firm, round mass was identified attached to the hard palate on physical examination. A computed tomography scan was performed, and the heterogeneous, mineral-attenuating mass was seen arising from the right aspect of the palatine bone and extending rostrally to the level of the last maxillary molars, caudally into the oropharynx, and dorsally into the nasal choana. Surgical debulking was performed to remove the portion of

An ~6-mo-old, free-ranging, male, American black bear (Ursus americanus) cub that was observed stumbling, acting disoriented, and falling, was dispatched and sent for postmortem evaluation. Bilaterally, round concretions were present in both the anterior and posterior aspects of the lens, disrupting the lens epithelium. These concretions were continuous with and extended from the inner surface of the lens capsule, as seen with a periodic acid-Schiff-hematoxylin reaction. Immunohistochemistry for alpha A crystallin was inconsistent, with weakly positive immunolabeling indicative of lens fibers.

In 2019, a wild-caught Malayan sun bear (Helarctos malayanus), rescued from the illegal pet trade and relocated to the Edinburgh Zoo (UK), was diagnosed with mast cell tumor (MCT) affecting a hindlimb. Surgical excision was performed at the initial site in the tarsal region, with a repeat excision 2 y later following a relapse, without evidence of metastatic spread. In 2023, MCT metastases were detected in the popliteal lymph node and prostate, prompting a novel treatment approach combining prednisolone and toceranib to alleviate the clinical signs. Four months after initiating treatment, the

The Brazilian Quaternary terrestrial Carnivora are represented by the following families: Canidae, Felidae, Ursidae, Procyonidae Mephitidae and Mustelidae. Their recent evolutionary history in South America is associated with the uplift of the Panamanian Isthmus, and which enabled the Great American Biotic Interchange (GABI). Here we present new fossil records of Carnivora found in a cave in Aurora do Tocantins, Tocantins, northern Brazil. A stratigraphical controlled collection in the sedimentary deposit of the studied cave revealed a fossiliferous level where the following Carnivora taxa wer

Canine adenovirus (CAV) type 1 and 2, respectively, cause infectious canine hepatitis and infectious canine laryngotracheitis in members of the families Canidae and Ursidae worldwide. Both of these infections are acute diseases, especially in young dogs. The aim of this study was to conduct a serological investigation of canine adenovirus infection. For this purpose, serum samples were collected from native pure-bred Kangal(n = 11), and Akbash dogs (n = 17) and Turkish Greyhounds (n = 15) in Eskişehir and Konya provinces. None of the dogs were previously vaccinated against CAV types. Indirect

Sarcoptic mange in American black bears ( Ursus americanus) is a recent topic of concern in the mid-Atlantic US as accounts of affected bears have increased in recent years. We describe a black bear with sarcoptic mange that was successfully treated with one oral dose of fluralaner. The outcome of this case has positive implications for the treatment options available for free-ranging black bears.

A congenital heart malformation was diagnosed in a free-ranging adult female European brown bear (Ursus arctos) found dead due to intraspecific violence. At necropsy, the heart had all four features of Fallot's tetralogy. No further malformations were identified in the animal, which was of normal size and weight for its age, in normal body condition, and had probably borne young. The heart condition was considered to have contributed to death during an attack by another bear.
