Plastid Phylogenomics of Elatostemateae (Urticaceae): Insights Into Structural Variation and Phylogenetic Relationships.

The tribe Elatostemateae, with approximately 1300 species, is the most species-rich group within Urticaceae, yet plastome evolution and several intergeneric relationships remain incompletely resolved. We analyzed 40 species representing the major extant lineages of Elatostemateae using complete plastomes and nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA); Metapilea was excluded because suitable DNA material was unavailable. Plastomes retained the typical angiosperm quadripartite structure and ranged from 143,738 to 163,969 bp. Comparative analyses revealed large inversions in the large single-copy (LSC) region

Polyphenolic and biological activities of leaves extracts of Argemone subfusiformis (Papaveraceae) and Urtica urens (Urticaceae).

Nowadays there is a resurgence of interest in wild plants for their possible medicinal value in diets, since some epidemiological studies have demonstrated their effectiveness against important diseases. Generally, foods of plant origin contain many bioactive compounds, proteins, energy, vitamins and specific minerals; in addition, the popular wild plant species provide fibre, essential fatty acids and enhance the taste and colour in diets. We studied the nutritional and medicinal potential of leaves of A. subfusiformis and U. urens, collected in Alice, South Africa in November 2006. To asses

Comparative chloroplast genomics reveals codon usage bias, simple sequence repeat dynamics, and phylogenomic relationships in Urticaceae.

Urticaceae is an ecologically diverse family, yet comparative studies on plastome structure and codon usage remain limited. To investigate the structural evolution and codon usage patterns in Urticaceae, we sequenced the complete chloroplast genome of Urtica cannabina and performed comparative analyses of plastome structure, codon usage bias, simple sequence repeats (SSRs), selective pressure, and phylogenetic relationships using plastome sequences from 48 Urticaceae species. The Urtica cannabina plastome (147,958 bp) displays a canonical quadripartite architecture, encoding a total of 128 gen

Daily effects of air pollutants and pollen types on asthma and COPD hospital emergency visits in the industrial and Mediterranean Spanish city of Cartagena.

BACKGROUND: Associations found in time-series studies on hospital emergency room (ER) visits due to asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with single air pollutants show some lack of consistency. The respiratory effects of aeroallergens in the air pollution mix are not well established. Non-linear relationships of different airborne pollen types with certain respiratory diseases have also been described. We aim to study the short-term effects of major air pollutants and aeroallergen pollen on asthma and COPD hospital ER visits in the industrial and Mediterranean Spanish city

Screening the Extract of Laportea bulbifera (Sieb. et Zucc.) Wedd. Based on Active Component Content, Its Antioxidant Capacity and Exploration of Hepatoprotective Activity in Rats.

Laportea bulbifera (Sieb. et Zucc.) Wedd., a plant with a long history of medicinal use, possesses uncertainly defined medicament portions while its antioxidant capacity remains largely unexplored. To gain a better understanding of its medicinal value, this study focused on investigating the Laportea bulbifera aboveground part (LBAP) and the Laportea bulbifera root (LBR). Through an assessment of the bioactive compound content, a significant finding emerged: the LBR exhibited notably higher levels of these bioactive phytochemicals compared to the LBAP. This observation was further reinforced b

Alternative therapy for autosensitization dermatitis.

During outdoor activities, Dendrocnide meyeniana can induce severe acute dermatitis, which usually needs topical or systemic corticosteroids, and oral antihistamine to alleviate associated symptoms such as exudation, pruritus or burning sensation. In this paper we report a 14-year-old male, with autosensitization dermatitis caused by Dendrocnide meyeniana, who had erythematous papules accompanied by itching and stinging sensations over left inner elbow first and then extended to the trunk and limbs. Based on the theory of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and pharmacological studies, the comb
