Urticaria pigmentosa.

Urticaria pigmentosa (UP), resulting from the accumulation of excessive numbers of mast cells in the skin, is the most common form of cutaneous mastocytosis. Observations highlight the diversity of this disease. Clonal expansion of early hematopoietic progenitor cells carrying activating mutations in KIT seems to be the basis of adult-onset UP. New pathogenetic findings are leading to the development of new diagnostic surrogate markers of disease and therapeutic approaches targeting neoplastic mast cells. Promising strategies may arise from an increased understanding about the cause of mastocy…

Urticaria Pigmentosa.

A case of urticaria pigmentosa with bullous lesions in a 2-year-old mile is presented. No systemic manifestation of mastocytosis was found.

Reactivated urticaria pigmentosa.

Urticaria pigmentosa is a rare dermatologic disorder characterized by cutaneous mastocytosis either in isolated or diffuse forms. The disease usually occurs before age 4, but does occur in adulthood. When it occurs in adults, it is associated with a higher incidence of systemic involvement and malignancy. We describe a case of reactivated urticaria pigmentosa temporally associated with acute contact dermatitis in an adult. We describe a practical screening method for systemic involvement and an approach to treatment.

Bullous urticaria pigmentosa.

Urticaria pigmentosa is the most common manifestation of cutaneous mastocytosis. Three-quarters of all cases occur during infancy or early childhood. Occasionally, vesicles or bullae may appear in persons with urticaria pigmentosa. We describe an unusual case of bullous urticaria pigmentosa with prominent scalp involvement. Prognosis and therapy are reviewed.

Urticaria Pigmentosa Without Pruritus.

Mastocytosis is a group of disorders characterized by the pathologic accumulation of mast cells in various tissues. One example of mastocytosis is urticaria pigmentosa, which presents with mastocytomas that can cause hives and, when irritated, pruritus. To our knowledge, we are describing the first case of urticaria pigmentosa without pruritus. The patient had a positive Darier's sign, stated that they never felt itchy, and denied ever using a topical steroid or antihistamine. Although our patient declined additional testing, patients like this may benefit from a detailed evaluation of their s…

Urticaria pigmentosa and systemic mastocytosis.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Additional investigations for systemic involvement should be initiated once the diagnosis of cutaneous mastocytosis has been established in an adult patient. A serum tryptase can serve as a screening test for systemic mastocytosis, and persistent elevations should prompt further investigations, such as bone marrow studies. ABSTRACT: Urticaria pigmentosa (UP) is the most common form of cutaneous mastocytosis, presenting as a wide variety of macroscopic appearances. Cutaneous mastocytosis in pediatric patients usually does not present with systemic involvement, but more th…

Dermatoscopic findings of urticaria pigmentosa.

Mastocytosis is a rare disease characterized by proliferation and accumulation of mast cells in various organs. The maculopapular cutaneous mastocytosis is divided into three subtypes: papular/plaque variant, urticaria pigmentosa and eruptive macular telangiectasia perstans. Dermoscopic may help to better characterize the different forms of cutaneous mastocytosis. We report a 55 year-old female with urticaria pigmentosa and its dermoscopy.

[Sudden death in urticaria pigmentosa].

A case of sudden death of a 25-year-old man, with a six years history of Urticaria pigmentosa, is reported. On a cold morning in November he was found lying dead on the lawn. Histology revealed no signs of systemic mastocytosis. The biochemical investigations (high free histamine level in urine) in addition to a BAC of 0,72 mg/g and the scene conditions (cold irritation) explained the mechanism of death, a systemic anaphylactoid reaction.

Urticaria pigmentosa. Histaminuria and treatment.

We present the case of an adult patient with urticaria pigmentosa. The sudden presence of severe symptomatology (symptoms to mast cell mediators release), made us think of evaluating extracutaneous affection. Our results are consistent with recent reports in the medical literature. We have confirmed an increase of conjugated histamine levels (methyl-histamine) during the attack and its return to normal values after the treatment. For these reasons we comment on the importance of histamine levels in diagnosis and treatment control. The gastrointestinal biopsy suggestive of mastocytosis; the sev…
