TeleBCI: remote user training, monitoring, and communication with an evoked-potential brain-computer interface.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are a movement-independent form of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) for individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The rare utilization of such devices in the homes of patients stems from a number of factors, one of which is the complexity of providing training and support for users. This paper describes the teleBCI interface used to train the patient and facilitator in the operation of a virtual keyboard using an evoked potential BCI. Fifteen patients with motor neuron disease and their communication partners were included in the stu

Parietal neural prosthetic control of a computer cursor in a graphical-user-interface task.

OBJECTIVE: To date, the majority of Brain-Machine Interfaces have been used to perform simple tasks with sequences of individual targets in otherwise blank environments. In this study we developed a more practical and clinically relevant task that approximated modern computers and graphical user interfaces (GUIs). This task could be problematic given the known sensitivity of areas typically used for BMIs to visual stimuli, eye movements, decision-making, and attentional control. Consequently, we sought to assess the effect of a complex, GUI-like task on the quality of neural decoding. APPROAC

Intersession Robust Hybrid Brain-Computer Interface: Safe and User-Friendly Approach with LED Activation Mechanism.

This study introduces a hybrid Brain-Computer (BCI) system with a robust and secure activation mechanism between sessions, aiming to minimize the negative effects of visual stimulus-based BCI systems on user eye health. The system is based on the integration of Electroencephalography (EEG) signals and Electrooculography (EOG) artefacts, and includes an LED stimulus operating at a frequency of 7 Hz for safe activation and objects moving in different directions. While the LED functions as an activation switch that reduces visual fatigue caused by traditional visual stimuli, moving objects provid

User-centered design in brain-computer interfaces-a case study.

OBJECTIVE: The array of available brain-computer interface (BCI) paradigms has continued to grow, and so has the corresponding set of machine learning methods which are at the core of BCI systems. The latter have evolved to provide more robust data analysis solutions, and as a consequence the proportion of healthy BCI users who can use a BCI successfully is growing. With this development the chances have increased that the needs and abilities of specific patients, the end-users, can be covered by an existing BCI approach. However, most end-users who have experienced the use of a BCI system at

Music and natural sounds in an auditory steady-state response based brain-computer interface to increase user acceptance.

Patients with total locked-in syndrome are conscious; however, they cannot express themselves because most of their voluntary muscles are paralyzed, and many of these patients have lost their eyesight. To improve the quality of life of these patients, there is an increasing need for communication-supporting technologies that leverage the remaining senses of the patient along with physiological signals. The auditory steady-state response (ASSR) is an electro-physiologic response to auditory stimulation that is amplitude-modulated by a specific frequency. By leveraging the phenomenon whereby ASS

Benchmarking motor imagery algorithms for pediatric users of brain-computer interfaces.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) can enable opportunities for self-expression and life participation for children with severe neurological disabilities. Unfortunately, the development and evaluation of state-of-the-art algorithms has largely neglected pediatric users. This work tests 12 state-of-the-art algorithms for motor imagery classification on three datasets of typically developing pediatric users (n=94 ages 5-17). When all datasets were combined, there were no significant differences between most non-deep learning algorithms, with all having a mean AUC score of 0.64 or 0.65. All the non

Mastering Tongue-Computer Interfaces: A Pilot Study on How Users Improve With Practice.

Tongue-operated input devices allow people with motor disabilities to interact with technology and their environment. Many such devices use barbell piercings to track the position of the tongue. Recent developments in tongue-computer interfacing have led to the proposal of a frame-integrated tracer that is not attached to the user's tongue. This study sought to investigate how an individuals ability to use their tongue to manipulate an integrated tracer evolves through use. Five people without motor disabilities and seven people with motor disabilities used a non-invasive inductive tongue-comp

Exploration of User's Mental State Changes during Performing Brain-Computer Interface.

Substantial developments have been established in the past few years for enhancing the performance of brain-computer interface (BCI) based on steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP). The past SSVEP-BCI studies utilized different target frequencies with flashing stimuli in many different applications. However, it is not easy to recognize user's mental state changes when performing the SSVEP-BCI task. What we could observe was the increasing EEG power of the target frequency from the user's visual area. BCI user's cognitive state changes, especially in mental focus state or lost-in-thought

What would brain-computer interface users want? Opinions and priorities of potential users with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Universal design principles advocate inclusion of end users in every design stage, including research and development. Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have long been described as potential tools to enable people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) to operate technology without moving. Therefore the objective of the current study is to determine the opinions and priorities of people with ALS regarding BCI design. This information will guide BCIs in development to meet end-user needs. A telephone survey was undertaken of 61 people with ALS from the University of Michigan's Motor Neuron Dis

Usability of the inductive tongue computer interface: Internet use, speaking, and drinking - evaluated by two users with disabilities.

Tongue computer interfaces have shown promising for both computer control and for control of assistive technologies and robotics. Still, evidence is lacking in relation to their usability resulting in speculations on their effectiveness for general computer use and their impact on other activities such as speaking, drinking, and eating. This paper presents the results of such a usability study performed with two individuals with tetraplegia. The results show a high acceptance of the Inductive Tongue Computer Interface with an average rating of 2.6 on a scale from 1 (normal) to 10 (unacceptable

Evolution of users' subjective experience over three training sessions with an EEG Motor-Imagery Brain-Computer Interface (MI-BCI).

Motor Imagery-based Brain-Computer Interfaces (MI-BCIs) have been shown to be promising for numerous applications, including sport training and entertainment for healthy users, but also for improving or restoring functions in neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders, e.g., for motor rehabilitation post-stroke or for attention training in attention deficits. Reliable interactions with such MI-BCIs require a heavy training process for both the machine and the user. Yet, how User eXperience (UX) evolves during standard training is still largely unclear, both within and between sessions/days. T

Vision Restoration to People with Long-Term Blindness Using the Brain-Computer Interface Technology: A Sociotechnical Research Framework to Improve Usefulness for Users.

Invasive and non-invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) represent a promising technology for treating various diseases and disabilities. BCI-based invasive solutions also include visual prostheses. Currently, there is rapid development of cortical prostheses and bold statements, eg, about the potential of Neuralink's experimental neuroprosthetic Blindsight to restore vision. However, questions arise about the usefulness of such solutions for people with long-term blindness, considering other compensatory aids and referring to the empirical basis of cases where vision has been successfully res

Bringing a WEB-based interface to a hospital information system.

The Hospital Information System at the MU Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital is a "home-grown" system written in MUMPS. The system has a "roll-and-scroll" user interface typical of terminal based systems from the 1970s and early 1980s. We are now introducing a new user interface that uses World Wide Web technology (HTML forms). Computers connected to the hospital's intranet can access the hospital system using the Web browser of the user's choice. The new user interface can run in parallel with the older interface (even on the same computer), and uses the same underlying database. This allow

Development and quantitative performance evaluation of a noninvasive EMG computer interface.

This paper describes a noninvasive electromyography (EMG) signal-based computer interface and a performance evaluation method based on Fitts' law. The EMG signals induced by volitional wrist movements were acquired from four sites in the lower arm to extract users' intentions, and six classes of wrist movements were distinguished using an artificial neural network. Using the developed interface, a user can move the cursor, click buttons, and type text on a computer. The test setup was built to evaluate the developed interface, and the mouse was tested by five volunteers with intact limbs. The

EEG-Based Brain-Computer Interface for Decoding Motor Imagery Tasks within the Same Hand Using Choi-Williams Time-Frequency Distribution.

This paper presents an EEG-based brain-computer interface system for classifying eleven motor imagery (MI) tasks within the same hand. The proposed system utilizes the Choi-Williams time-frequency distribution (CWD) to construct a time-frequency representation (TFR) of the EEG signals. The constructed TFR is used to extract five categories of time-frequency features (TFFs). The TFFs are processed using a hierarchical classification model to identify the MI task encapsulated within the EEG signals. To evaluate the performance of the proposed approach, EEG data were recorded for eighteen intact

A Protocol for Automatic Generation of Web-Based Interfaces for LabVIEW Applications Using the Remote Interoperability Protocol.

Remote experimental platforms enable local simulation models or physical devices to be accessed over a network, but conventional Web front ends typically require a separate page, control layout, and data communication logic for each experiment, which increases development costs. This work validates an established workflow for automatically generating a Web user interface (UI) from LabVIEW virtual instruments (VIs) using the remote interoperability protocol (RIP) and provides a reproducible protocol for implementing it. The workflow constructs LabVIEW VIs that define input controls and output i

From Brain to Body: New Technologies Improve Paralyzed Patients? Quality of Life.

Paralysis, whether caused by spinal cord injury, neurodegenerative disease, or other factors, poses a host of issues for patients. These include not just the inability to move parts of their bodies but potential problems with communication and bladder control as well. Fortunately, the last decade has seen promising technology advances to address these concerns. Although most are still in the research stage, these technologies-including brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), exoskeletons, and robotics-may one day improve the lives of people with paralysis.

Plotgardener App: a graphical interface for publication-ready genomic visualization.

SUMMARY: Plotgardener is an R package used for generating high-quality genomic visualizations. Despite its broad range of functions and versatility, its reliance on code presents a barrier for many potential users. To address this, we developed a macOS desktop application version of Plotgardener that enables users to create publication-ready genomic plots with no programming experience. The application employs a modular architecture comprising an Electron.js backend, a React frontend, and a Python parser that dynamically analyzes the Plotgardener package to ensure interface fields remain synch
