Dietary vitamin C and uterine cervical dysplasia.

A case-control study of women with cervical abnormalities identified through Pap smears, was conducted in the Bronx, New York, to explore the relationship between nutritional intake and cervical dysplasia. Nutrient intake was estimated from computer analysis of three-day food records and 24-hour recall for 169 study participants (87 cases, 82 controls), including a subset of 49 pairs matched for age, race and parity. Mean vitamin C intake per day from three-day food record for controls was 107 mg, compared to 80 mg for cases (p less than 0.01). Analysis of matched pairs showed similar results;

Cervical schistosomiasis as a risk factor of cervical uterine dysplasia in a traveler.

Female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) may be under-recognized in endemic areas as a cause of cervical dysplasia, neoplasia, infertility, and as a facilitator of the transmission of HIV. To the best of our knowledge, few cases of FGS mimicking neoplasia have been reported in travelers. We report a clinical case of a 34-year-old white woman who presented with a severe cervical dysplasia, without any features of human papilloma virus infection, 2 years after bathing in a waterfall, a source of schistosomiasis, in Mali. Schistosomes eggs were found on the conization. Management included conization

Urinary cyclic nucleotides and the cytopathology of human uterine cervical dysplasias.

Blinded urinary assays for cyclic guanosine 3':5'-monophosphate (cGMP) and cyclic adenosine 3':5'-monophosphate (cAMP) were performed on 49 subjects with documented abnormal cervical cytology and 21 control subjects with normal cytology. A significant difference in the mean cGMP:cAMP ratios between the case and control groups was found. A significantly greater proportion of women with cytological abnormalities had a cGMP:cAMP ratio above the 0.2 level (p less than 0.001). Cases treated surgically for severe dysplasia or carcinoma in situ of the cervix revealed a significant postsurgical fall i

Colposcopic pattern of cervicitis, dysplasia and pre-invasive cancer of the uterine cervix.

The great majority of cervical neoplasia begin in the transformation zone between the squamous and the columnar epithelium, i.e. within the area in which metaplasia takes place. This process, both normal and atypical, can be studied colposcopically. Colposcopy increases the diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic success in cervical neoplasia as it is the only method that permits a topographical study of cervical lesions, and indicates the location of neoplastic epithelial proliferation.

Plasma retinol-binding protein in human uterine cervical dysplasias and cancer.

Plasma concentrations of retinol-binding protein (RBP) were measured in a cross-sectional study of asymptomatic normal menstruating women (n = 94) who obtained Pap smears and participated in a double-blinded nutritional survey. Controls (n = 45) were women with negative cervical cytology, normal colposcopy and no known gynecologic pathology or dysfunction. Cases (n = 49) were subjects with abnormal cytology and colposcopically directed biopsy that established cervical epithelial dysplasias histopathologically in the previous 12-month period. In addition, 8 women with cancer of the cervix were

Early progression stage of malignancy of uterine cervical dysplasia as revealed by immunohistochemical demonstration of increased DNA-instability.

The degree of DNA-instability as revealed by the immunohistochemical staining with anti-single-stranded DNA antibody after acid hydrolysis (DNA-instability test) was used as a marker of malignancy. This was applied to mild dysplasia (42 cases), moderate dysplasia (43 cases), severe dysplasia (27 cases), squamous cell carcinoma in situ (CIS) (21 cases), invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) (31 cases) and normal (7 cases) human uterine cervix. The expression of tumour suppressor gene p53 and oncogene bcl-2 was detected immunohistochemically. Proliferative activity was evaluated by PCNA immumoh

Microphotometric nuclear DNA analysis in cervical dysplasia of the uterine cervix: its relation to the progression to malignancy and regression to normalcy.

The present study was attempted to reveal the predictive value of DNA ploidy pattern of uterine cervical dysplasia cases in relation to cervical carcinogenesis. Microphotometric nuclear DNA analysis using Feulgen stain was carried out in 310 cervical smears of 80 dysplasia cases consisting of 53 cases which progressed to malignancy and 27 cases which regressed to inflammation or normalcy during their follow-up periods. Aneuploid DNA pattern was observed in initial as well as follow-up smears in 69.8% of cases of the progressive group, and in 7.4% of cases of the regressive group. This differen

Genomic amplification of the human telomerase gene (hTERC) associated with human papillomavirus is related to the progression of uterine cervical dysplasia to invasive cancer.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection plays an etiological role in the development of cervical dysplasia and cancer. Amplification of human telomerase gene (hTERC) and over expression of telomerase were found to be associated with cervical tumorigenesis. This study was performed to analyze genomic amplification of hTERC gene, telomerase activity in association with HPV infection in different stages of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and cervical cancer. We were studying the role of hTERC in the progression of uterine cervical dysplasia to invasive cancer, and proposed an ad

25-Hydroxycholecalciferol Serum Level Shows an Inverse Relationship with High-Grade Uterine Cervical Dysplasia in HIV-Uninfected Black Women in South Africa.

Background: Cervical dysplasia is a pre-malignant condition of the uterine cervix and is highly prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa; especially affecting HIV-infected Black women. The anti-dysplastic effect of vitamin D hormones in cervical dysplasia is poorly understood. Therefore, we conducted a cross-sectional case-control observational study to assess the relationship between serum 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25(OH)D) and cervical dysplasia, amongst Black women with and without HIV infection. Methods: The study participants attended a gynaecologic oncology clinic at an academic hospital in Pret

Expression of the carbohydrate tumour marker Sialyl Lewis A, Sialyl Lewis X, Lewis Y and Thomsen-Friedenreich antigen in normal squamous epithelium of the uterine cervix, cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer.

The carbohydrate molecules Sialyl Lewis X (SLeX), Sialyl Lewis A (SLeA), Lewis Y (LeY) and Thomsen-Friedenreich antigen (TF) are known to mediate the adhesion between tumor cells and endothelium. They are used as serum markers in diagnosis and treatment in a broad spectrum of human carcinomas, but their expression profile and role in the development of cervical cancer remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of SLeX, SLeA, LeY and TF in normal cervical squamous epithelium, cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer. Slides of paraffin-embedded tissue were fixed and

Hypoxia-inducible erythropoietin signaling in squamous dysplasia and squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix and its potential role in cervical carcinogenesis and tumor progression.

Tissue hypoxia is a characteristic property of cervical cancers that makes tumors resistant to chemo- and radiation therapy. Erythropoietin (Epo) is a hypoxia-inducible stimulator of erythropoiesis. Acting via its receptor (EpoR), Epo up-regulates bcl-2 and inhibits apoptosis of erythroid cells and rescues neurons from hypoxic damage. In addition to human papillomavirus infection, increased bcl-2 expression and decreased apoptosis are thought to play a role in the progression of cervical neoplasia. Using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting we showed that HeLa a

Unilateral Human Papillomavirus Infection and Cervical Dysplasia in a Patient With Two Cervices.

BACKGROUND: In a uterine didelphys with two cervices, cervical screening may not reveal the same abnormalities. CASE: We present a patient with a uterine didelphys with two cervices in a single vagina after resection of a longitudinal vaginal septum at age 12. She presented with abnormal Pap test results with the right and left cervices discordant from each other. Despite both cervices sharing stroma in the midline, her right cervix was negative for human papillomavirus (HPV) and dysplasia, while her left cervix was HPV positive with high-grade cervical dysplasia on an excisional specimen.
