Intermediate uveitis (IU) is described as inflammation in the anterior vitreous, ciliary body and the peripheral retina. In the Standardization of Uveitis Nomenclature (SUN) working group's international workshop for reporting clinical data the consensus reached was that the term IU should be used for that subset of uveitis where the vitreous is the major site of the inflammation and if there is an associated infection (for example, Lyme disease) or systemic disease (for example, sarcoidosis). The diagnostic term pars planitis should be used only for that subset of IU where there is snow bank

Intermediate uveitis is an intraocular inflammation involving the anterior vitreous, peripheral retina and pars plana. It usually affects patients from 5 to 30 years old, without gender or racial preferences. The etiology is unknown but there are several associated diseases: multiple sclerosis, idiopathic optic neuritis, autoimmune corneal endotheliopathy, sarcoidosis, thyroid diseases and inflammatory bowel diseases. Symptoms are blurry vision, floaters and distortion of central vision. The syndrome is bilateral in 80% of the patients and chronic with periods of exacerbation and remission. Cl

Intermediate uveitis defines the group of diseases formerly called pars planitis or chronic cyclitis. Its frequency amounts to 10-20% of all uveitis cases. The anamnesis is vague. The clinical symptoms mainly involve the vitreous. The visual acuity is variable, depending of the involvement of the retina. A slight inflammation of the anterior chamber is possible, but no synechiae are present. The vitreous shows a positive Tyndall and cells, snow balls, eventual plaques on the pars plana. Serious cases are complicated by a retinal vasculitis, which often leads to cystic macular edema and papilla

Intermediate uveitis is a form of intraocular inflammation in which the vitreous body is the major site of inflammation. Intermediate uveitis is primarily treated medicinally and systemic corticosteroids are the mainstay of therapy. When recurrence of uveitis or side effects occur during corticosteroid therapy an immunosuppressive treatment is required. Cyclosporine A is the only immunosuppressive agent that is approved for therapy of uveitis in Germany; however, other immunosuppressive drugs have also been shown to be effective and well-tolerated in patients with intermediate uveitis. PURPOSE: Intermediate uveitis (IU) is generally believed to be autoimmune in nature requiring systemic corticosteroid and immunomodulatory therapy. This belief stems from the published reports from the developed countries; and the scenario maybe different in the developing countries that maybe endemic for certain infections. There are no large series available on the etiologic causes of intermediate uveitis from the developing countries. The present series aims to describe the etiology, treatment, and course of IU in North Indian population.
METHODS: In a retrospective analysis, records of 20

Intermediate uveitis (IU) in an intraocular inflammation that predominantly affects the vitreous. It typically manifests as chronic low-grade inflammation, mainly affecting children and young adults. Uncontrolled chronic intraocular inflammation carries a high risk of visual loss. IU, despite being a low-grade inflammation, is among the sight-threatening conditions owing to its intrinsically-associated vision-robbing ocular complications. It can cause early and late-onset ocular complications affecting the anterior and posterior segments of the eye. 40-60% of the patients who suffer from IU wi

PURPOSE: To examine cases of intermediate uveitis complicated by retinoschisis and review the pathogenetic hypothesis.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of patients with intermediate uveitis. Data were collected at three uveitis referral centers on sex, age, best-corrected visual acuity, degree of vitritis, extent and location of snowbanking, presence of hard exudates, neovascularization, vitreous hemorrhage, and extent and nature of retinal elevations.
RESULTS: A series of 23 eyes of 20 patients were examined; patient's age ranged from 10 years to 70 years and follow-up period from 8 mo

Uveitis in children are less frequent than in adults. Their prognosis is variable because it may be found as an isolated and idiophatic condition or in association with definite clinical entities. The associated noninfectious diseases with predominantly renal involvement are tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis syndrome (TINU syndrome), mesangial glomerulonephritis isolated or in association with Behçet's disease. A case of 14-years-old girl with intermediate uveitis (pars planitis) and mesangial glomerulonephritis is presented. The ocular symptoms was eye redness and ocular pain and she h

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the character of intermediate uveitis by ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) and determine the potential and usefulness of UBM as a diagnostic procedure in intermediate uveitis.
METHODS: Twenty-one cases (35 eyes) of intermediate uveitis were diagnosed by slit lamp biomicroscopy and indirect binocular ophthalmoscopy with scleral indentation. UBM was performed on 35 eyes of 21 patients with intermediate uveitis in order to determine the configuration of pars, plana peripheral retina and vitreous.
RESULTS: In 31 of 35 eyes, pathological structures such as spotted or membra

Intermediate uveitis is associated with a wide variety of complications, particularly in patients attending uveitis referral centres, but little information exists on the frequency of these complications in a general pool of patients. We reviewed all the cases known to have originated in one English county. 86 eyes of 48 patients with a mean follow-up of 48 months were affected. The principal threat to sight was cystoid macular oedema (31%). Other complications included vitreous haemorrhage (8%), disc swelling (5%), periphlebitis (21%) and cataract (5%). Most patients required no treatment oth

Optic neuritis is one of the diagnostic criteria for Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder (NMOSD). However, the presentation of other ophthalmic manifestations in a patient with NMOSD is less common. A case of intermediate uveitis in a patient with anti-aquaporin-4 antibody (AQP4) positivity is detailed in this report. We present here a case of a 17-year-old Southeast Asian woman who presented with segmental fullness of the optic disc margin, small hypopigmented lesion along inferior temporal arcade, trace vitreous cells and inferior snowballs consistent with unilateral intermediate uveitis.

BACKGROUND: Intermediate uveitis is characterized by vitreal inflammation with associated inflammation of the vitreous base and peripheral anterior retina and choroid. It may be found as an isolated and idiopathic condition or in association with systemic disorders such as multiple sclerosis and sarcoidosis.
OBJECTIVE: To identify the clinical features of intermediate uveitis and assess its association with systemic diseases.
METHODS: Retrospective study of 83 patients presenting with intermediate uveitis between 1970 and 1991.
RESULTS: Evidence of systemic disorders was found in 26 of 83 p

PURPOSE: To evaluate the association between human leukocyte antigen (HLA-DR15) specificity and intermediate uveitis.
METHODS: Eighteen patients diagnosed with intermediate uveitis underwent HLA-DR15 serotyping. Additionally, DNA-based phenotyping for a specific HLA-DR15 allele was performed in four patients. The clinical features of HLA-DR15-positive intermediate uveitis were compared with those of HLA-DR15-negative intermediate uveitis.
RESULTS: Thirteen of 18 patients (72%) were positive for HLA-DR15. The frequency of the HLA-DR15 specificity in intermediate uveitis patients was significa

Intermediate uveitis is a rare disease. Interdiscliplinary investigations to identify or exclude an associated systemic disease (in Central Europe, this would primarily mean sarcoidosis and multiple sclerosis) should be initiated even at the first manifestation of disease. Therapy should be started in those patients with marked inflammatory activity or secondary complications and primarily encompasses local and systemic corticosteroids, although some patients need second line steroid sparing systemic DMARD therapy (DMARD: disease-modifying antirheumatic drug).
