Histopathology of vaccine-preventable diseases.

The widespread use of vaccines has been one of the most important medical advances in the last century, saving trillions of dollars and millions of lives. Despite local eradication of some infections, travellers returning from affected areas may cause outbreaks through reintroduction of pathogens to individuals who are unable to receive vaccines for medical reasons or who have declined vaccination for non-medical reasons. Infections that would otherwise be uncommonly encountered by anatomical pathologists should therefore remain in the differential diagnosis for immunocompromised and unvaccina

Vaccine-preventable diseases in pregnancy.

In 2011, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified the reduction in vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) as one of the greatest achievements of the previous decade. During that time, several new pediatric and adult vaccines were introduced including rotavirus, quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate, herpes zoster, human papillomavirus, pneumococcal conjugate, and adult tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis. Despite the impact of immunization and its public health priority, vaccine coverage among adults in the United States remains suboptimal. Incorporation of adult immunization

Eradication of vaccine-preventable diseases.

Eradication is the permanent reduction to zero of the worldwide incidence of infection caused by a specific agent as a result of deliberate efforts; intervention measures are no longer needed. To date, the only infectious disease that has been eradicated is smallpox. Poliomyelitis is targeted for eradication by the year 2000, and the eradication initiative is well under way, with the Western Hemisphere certified as being polio-free and more than one year having passed since polio cases occurred in the Western Pacific Region of the World Health Organization. A review of the technical feasibilit

Vaccine-Preventable Diseases in Older Adults.

Older adults are at an increased risk of vaccine-preventable diseases partly because of physiologic changes in the immune and other body systems related to age and/or accumulating comorbidities that increase the vulnerability to infections and decrease the response to vaccines. Strategies to improve the response to vaccines include using a higher antigenic dose (such as in the high-dose inactivated influenza vaccines) as well as adding adjuvants (such as MF59 in the adjuvanted inactivated influenza vaccine).

Postexposure Management of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases.

Because some parents are choosing to not vaccinate or only partially vaccinate their children, vaccine-preventable diseases that once were rarely seen in pediatric practice must now be considered part of the differential diagnosis when caring for these children. Measles, mumps, varicella, meningococcal disease, pertussis, and influenza are reviewed. Recommendations for prevention and treatment of these vaccine-preventable diseases are discussed.

Vaccine-preventable diseases in health care.

It cannot be overemphasized that good preventive measures such as universal precautions, good hand-washing techniques, and appropriate personal protection is the mainstay of reducing the risk of nosocomial infections to other patients and HCWs. Vaccines that are safe and effective in reducing risks of nosocomial infections must be promoted through educational campaigns and made easily available to all employees, including those on night and weekend shifts. Extended hours and onsite vaccination programs help to increase acceptance of vaccines at certain times, such as during the annual influenz

Dentists' awareness toward vaccine preventable diseases.

Effective infection control in dentistry is unfeasible without an adequate immunization program for dental health care providers (DHCPs). Such an assumption is demonstrated for some vaccine preventable infectious diseases (VPIDs), such as Hepatitis B, Influenza and Varicella. However, excluding Hepatitis B vaccine, immunization programs for DHCPs are few and often unclear about which vaccinations are recommended, thus leading to generally low awareness and consequent low vaccination rates. This survey investigated dentists' awareness toward VPIDs. At the moment of registration to a dental cong

Recognizing Vaccine-Preventable Diseases and Managing Outbreaks.

Outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases are becoming more common in the United States. Outbreaks of some diseases, such as measles, can be attributed to decreasing vaccination rates. Clinicians need to be aware of the vulnerabilities in their communities. Detection of an outbreak requires familiarity with signs, symptoms, and laboratory findings for these now unusual diseases. Clinicians also need to work with public health officials to identify, treat, and limit the spread of these infections. This article describes the populations most at risk from illnesses associated with sporadic outbre

Vaccine Preventable Diseases in the Emergency Department.

Vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) are re-emerging worldwide, with declining vaccination coverage since the COVID-19 pandemic resulting in outbreaks of previously rare infections in Australasia. Emergency departments are increasingly at the forefront of recognising and managing these diseases while responding to their broader public health implications. This editorial examines the factors contributing to the resurgence of VPDs and declining immunisation rates, and their implications for ACEM training and EM practice. The accompanying articles in this issue provide practical perspectives on ma

Vaccine preventable viral diseases in developing countries.

There are several viral infectious diseases with a high impact on developing countries which can be prevented by immunization with existing vaccines. The most important are poliomyelitis, measles, hepatitis B and yellow fever. Vaccines against poliomyelitis and measles used within the framework of the WHO/Expanded Programme on Immunization prevent about 1.4 million deaths from measles and 360,000 cases of paralytic polio per year in developing countries, but about 1.5 million measles' deaths and 200,000 cases of paralytic polio still occur. Hepatitis B infection and its sequelae are responsibl

Vaccine-preventable diseases and child day care.

Several diseases that now can be prevented by vaccines (diphtheria, measles, mumps, poliomyelitis, and rubella) have historically been widely transmitted in settings where children first congregate--primarily schools. Increasingly, children are brought together at younger ages in day care centers, and instances of these diseases have been recorded in day care settings. However, there have been few major outbreaks because of high immunization levels in these children. In 46 states, laws require immunization of children attending licensed day care facilities. Surveys show that children in day ca

Vaccine-preventable diseases, vaccines and Guillain-Barre' syndrome.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute, immune-mediated polyradiculoneuropathy. Infections and vaccines have been hypothesized to play a role in triggering GBS development. These beliefs can play a role in reducing vaccination coverage. In this report, data concerning this hypothesis are discussed. It is shown that an association between vaccine administration and GBS has never been proven for most of debated vaccines, although it cannot be definitively excluded. The only exception is the influenza vaccine, at least for the preparation used in 1976. For some vaccines, such as measles/mumps/

Neurologic complications of vaccine-preventable diseases in children.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, shifting health policy and increasing vaccine hesitancy have all increased the likelihood healthcare practitioners will encounter vaccine-preventable diseases in children. Both front-line and consulting clinicians need to be able to identify these previously rare diseases and their neurologic complications, particularly in un- or under-vaccinated children. RECENT FINDINGS: As diseases previously considered rare or eliminated reemerge, more is known about direct and indirect consequences of peripheral and central nervous system infectio

The global threat of vaccine-preventable neurological diseases.

Vaccination is widely considered to be the pre-eminent public health achievement of modern history, but declining coverage resulting from vaccine hesitancy and from interruptions in immunization campaigns in geopolitically unstable regions threatens progress against vaccine-preventable diseases. The global burden of vaccine-preventable neurological diseases is substantial, resulting in acute and chronic complications as well as high case fatality rates. In recent years, outbreaks of dengue, poliomyelitis, measles, pertussis, meningococcal disease and Japanese encephalitis virus have been linke

The global imperative to address vaccine-preventable diseases.

BACKGROUND: When one speaks of global health, there are few issues that actually have a health impact globally rather than in just one or more regions of the world or in a specific population. When truly thinking globally, among the most important global health issues affecting large segments of the world's populations is the persistence of vaccine-preventable diseases. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to provide a perspective on the importance of immunisation as a unique global health concern in that it is not a time-limited issue. DISCUSSION: Although there may be outbreaks of vaccine
