A nutraceutical diet based on Lespedeza spp., Vaccinium macrocarpon and Taraxacum officinale improves spontaneous feline chronic kidney disease.

Chronic kidney disease is characterized by structural and/or functional impairment of one or both kidneys persisting for more than 3 months. In cats, chronic kidney disease can frequently occur in animals aged over 9 years with an incidence of approximately 10%. Thirty-four client-owned, neutered cats, suffering from stage II-III chronic kidney disease and diagnosed according to the International Renal Interest Society guidelines were randomly assigned to receive either a control diet (n = 17) or a nutraceutical diet (ND; n = 17) for 90 days. Both diets were commercialized for management of CK

Candida albicans Biofilm Inhibition by Two Vaccinium macrocarpon (Cranberry) Urinary Metabolites: 5-(3',4'-DihydroxyPhenyl)-γ-Valerolactone and 4-Hydroxybenzoic Acid.

Candida spp. are pathobionts, as they can switch from commensals to pathogens, responsible for a variety of pathological processes. Adhesion to surfaces, morphological switch and biofilm-forming ability are the recognized virulence factors promoting yeast virulence. Sessile lifestyle also favors fungal persistence and antifungal tolerance. In this study, we investigated, in vitro, the efficacy of two urinary cranberry metabolites, 5-(3',4'-dihydroxy phenyl)-γ-valerolactone (VAL) and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (4-HBA), in inhibiting C. albicans adhesion and biofilm formation. Both the reference stra

Proanthocyanidin-rich extracts from cranberry fruit (Vaccinium macrocarpon Ait.) selectively inhibit the growth of human pathogenic fungi Candida spp. and Cryptococcus neoformans.

Cranberry ( Vaccinium macrocarpon ) has been shown in clinical studies to reduce infections caused by Escherichia coli and other bacteria, and proanthocyanidins are believed to play a role. The ability of cranberry to inhibit the growth of opportunistic human fungal pathogens that cause oral, skin, respiratory, and systemic infections has not been well-studied. Fractions from whole cranberry fruit were screened for inhibition of five Candida species and Cryptococcus neoformans , a causative agent of fungal meningitis. Candida glabrata , Candida lusitaniae , Candida krusei , and Cryptococcus ne

Effect of high-power probe ultrasonication (20 kHz) treatment duration on the physicochemical, bioactive, mineral and microbiological quality of cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) juice.

Preservation of bioactive, and nutritional quality alongside microbial inactivation remains a central constraint in cranberry juice production. Thermal pasteurisation, while microbiologically effective, potentially degrades the thermolabile polyphenols fractions that define the functional value of fruit juices. Non-thermal alternatives have been widely reported for polyphenol-rich juices, but these studies almost exclusively report aggregate spectrophotometric endpoints, which cannot distinguish the release of simple phenolics from the degradation of the oligomeric proanthocyanidins that carry

Diet-Derived Advanced Glycation End-Products (AGEs) Induce Muscle Wasting In Vitro, and a Standardized Vaccinium macrocarpon Extract Restrains AGE Formation and AGE-Dependent C2C12 Myotube Atrophy.

Dietary advanced glycation end-products (dAGEs) contained in high-sugar/fat and ultra-processed foods of the "Western diet" (WD) pattern predispose to several diseases by altering protein function or increasing oxidative stress and inflammation via RAGE (receptor for advanced glycation end-products). Although elevated endogenous AGEs are associated with loss of muscle mass and functionality (i.e., muscle wasting; MW), the impact of dAGEs on MW has not been elucidated. Here, we show that the most common dAGEs or their precursor, methylglyoxal (MGO), induce C2C12 myotube atrophy as endogenous AG

Chronic Consumption of Cranberries (Vaccinium macrocarpon) for 12 Weeks Improves Episodic Memory and Regional Brain Perfusion in Healthy Older Adults: A Randomised, Placebo-Controlled, Parallel-Groups Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Ageing is highly associated with cognitive decline and modifiable risk factors such as diet are believed to protect against this process. Specific dietary components and in particular, (poly)phenol-rich fruits such as berries have been increasingly recognised for their protection against age-related neurodegeneration. However, the impact of cranberries on cognitive function and neural functioning in older adults remains unclear. DESIGN: A 12-week parallel randomised placebo-controlled trial of freeze-dried cranberry powder was conducted in 60 older adults aged between 50 and 80 ye

Evaluation of cytotoxic effects of fruit extracts on oral cancer cell lines: An in vitro experimental study.

BACKGROUND: The Indian subcontinent has the highest incidence and prevalence of Oral Squamous cell carcinoma. Recently, there has been a shift in paradigm favoring natural products to combat cancer, owing to the high costs and immense side effects associated with the conventional treatments such as surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Cancer statistics express that consumption of diets rich in fresh fruits and vegetables is inversely associated with cancer incidence. The same has led to the increased number of studies in this area in recent times. The cytotoxic effect of many fruit extract

Cranberry for Urinary Tract Infection: From Bench to Bedside.

Urinary tract infections are common infectious diseases which can occur in any part of the urinary tract such as bladder, kidney, ureters, and urethra. They are commonly caused by bacteria that enter through the urethra. Urinary tract infections commonly develop in the bladder and spread to renal tissues. Up to now, there are different antimicrobial agents which have beneficial role on urinary tract infections. However, most of them cause different adverse effects and therefore, much attention has been paid to the search for effective therapeutic agents with negligible adverse effects. Cranber

Spatial Scale and Field Management Affect Patterns of Phosphorus Loss in Cranberry Floodwaters.

Although cranberries ( Ait.) are indigenous to the northeastern United States, phosphorus (P) fertilizer additions and periodic flooding make commercial cranberry a potential source of P to the region's lakes and streams. In this study, we report values of P export in cranberry floodwaters that range from <0.8 to 4.7 kg P ha, generally reflecting differences in the hydrological, edaphic, and management factors underlying soil P transfer to floodwater. The relatively high P loading rate (4.7 P kg P ha) was associated with harvest flooding of organic-rich soils. Periods of winter flooding and th
