Bacterial vaginosis.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a vaginal microbiome disorder that is associated with preterm birth and spontaneous abortion, increased risk of HIV infection and sexually transmitted infections, and has negative effects on quality of life. BV affects one in four women globally, with the highest burden in resource-limited settings. Marked alterations in vaginal microbiome composition, in pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, and in the proteome and metabolome characterize BV and contribute to adverse sequelae. Despite its prevalence, the exact aetiologic agent of BV is unknown and its pathophy

[Bacterial vaginosis].

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the main cause of vaginal dysbacteriosis in the women during the reproductive age. It is an entity in which many studies have focused for years and which is still open for discussion topics. This is due to the diversity of microorganisms that cause it and therefore, its difficult treatment. Bacterial vaginosis is probably the result of vaginal colonization by complex bacterial communities, many of them non-cultivable and with interdependent metabolism where anaerobic populations most likely play an important role in its pathogenesis. The main symptoms are an increas

Bacterial vaginosis.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most common of the vaginitides affecting women of reproductive age. It appears to be due to an alteration in the vaginal ecology by which Lactobacillus spp., the predominant organisms in the healthy vagina, are replaced by a mixed flora including Prevotella bivia, Prevotella disiens, Porphyromonas spp., Mobiluncus spp., and Peptostreptococcus spp. All of these organisms except Mobiluncus spp. are also members of the endogenous vaginal flora. While evidence from treatment trials does not support the notion that BV is sexually transmitted, recent studies have show

Bacterial vaginosis.

Bacterial vaginosis is a common, non-inflammatory infection of the vagina. It is characterised by the presence of a thin, homogenous, greyish-white discharge. The differential diagnosis includes infection with Trichomonas vaginalis and Candida albicans. A diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis may be made by the detection of three of the following: characteristic discharge, pH of 5 or greater, clue cells and a positive KOH amine test. Culture of vaginal discharge is not necessary to effect a diagnosis. Bacterial vaginosis responds readily to treatment with metronidazole at a dosage of 400 mg twice d

Bacterial Vaginosis.

Bacterial vaginosis, the most prevalent cause of vaginal discharge in the United States, is characterized microbiologically by a shift in the vagina away from a lactobacillus-predominant flora and toward a predominantly anaerobic milieu. The cause of bacterial vaginosis is unknown, but the epidemiology of the syndrome suggests that it is sexually associated. Bacterial vaginosis has been associated with various complications, such as pelvic inflammatory disease, preterm birth, postoperative gynecologic infections, and abnormal Pap smears. Abnormal vaginal flora may also be a biologic risk facto

Bacterial vaginosis.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is an alteration of the vaginal flora, where the normally predominant lactobacilli are replaced by a cocktail of organisms including Gardnerella vaginalis and anaerobes. It presents with a grey, homogenous, offensive vaginal discharge that has a raised pH. However, around half the women with this condition are asymptomatic. Diagnosis is best made by microscopic examination of a Gram-stained smear of vaginal secretions. Treatment is with metronidazole or clindamycin. The indications for treatment of asymptomatic BV are not clear, but women should probably be treated bef

Bacterial vaginosis.

Bacterial vaginosis (nonspecific vaginitis) is a polymicrobial, superficial vaginal infection caused by an increase in anaerobic organisms and a concomitant decrease in lactobacilli. Gardnerella vaginalis, once thought to be the sole etiologic agent, is probably one of several endogenous members of the vaginal flora that overgrow in women with bacterial vaginosis. Whether the growth of anaerobes or a primary decrease in lactobacilli is the initial pathogenic event remains unclear. Epidemiological studies have revealed that current or previous infections caused by Trichomonas organisms, increas

Hallmarks of Bacterial Vaginosis.

Background: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is considered the most common cause of vaginal discharge, which is related to several public health issues, such as an increased risk for sexually transmitted infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, pregnancy-related problems such as abortion, stillbirth or premature birth, and tubal factor infertility. BV is not considered an infection but an imbalance in the vaginal microbiota, characterized by a substitution of the normal Lactobacilli flora by anaerobe. Reducing resistance against infections by several mechanisms, including bacterial homeostasis, stabil

Bacterial vaginosis in pregnancy.

Bacterial vaginosis is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes across all gestational ages. It is linked to first and second trimester fetal loss, chorioamnionitis, preterm delivery, low-birthweight infants and maternal/neonatal infectious morbidity. Infants who survive preterm birth are at an increased risk of subsequent neurodevelopmental delays and handicap, more so if there was underlying choriomnionitis. The exact mechanisms and pathways through which bacterial vaginosis exerts these adverse effects are incompletely understood. Not surprisingly, intervention studies in bacterial vagino

Bacterial vaginosis in pregnancy.

Bacterial vaginosis is a clinical condition caused by replacement of the normal hydrogen peroxide producing Lactobacillus sp. in the vagina with high concentrations of characteristic sets of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Bacterial vaginosis is the most prevalent cause of vaginal discharge or malodor, although 50 percent of women who meet the criteria for this condition are asymptomatic. Bacterial vaginosis is reported in 10 to 41 percent of women, and new evidence has shown association with maternal and fetal morbidity. Studies have shown that spontaneous abortion, preterm labor, premature b

Bacterial vaginosis: an update.

Bacterial vaginosis is the most common cause of vaginal discharge. Recent studies have confirmed its association with pelvic inflammatory disease and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Bacterial vaginosis is treated with oral metronidazole (given either as a single dose or a seven-day course) or clindamycin. Treatment with topical clindamycin or metronidazole is also effective in returning the vaginal flora to normal but may be less effective in preventing the increased incidence of adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Managing recurrent bacterial vaginosis.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most frequently found condition of the female genital tract. It increases a woman's risk of acquiring HIV, is associated with increased complications in pregnancy, and may be involved in the pathogenesis of pelvic inflammatory disease. Yet there are many unanswered questions about its aetiology, making management of recurrent infection difficult and often idiosyncratic. This paper discusses the current knowledge and possible management of recurrent BV.

Bacterial vaginosis and smoking.

This study aimed to investigate if there is an association between bacterial vaginosis (BV) and smoking. This cohort study included 956 randomly chosen, apparently healthy women at 2 family planning and one youth clinic. Of the 956 women, 131 women fulfilled the criteria for BV and the remaining 825 served as a control group. BV, BV-associated bacteria and gynaecological infections were diagnosed. Structured personal interviews concerning, smoking, alcohol and drug habits, sexual behaviour and reproductive history were made. Before and after adjustment for possible confounding factors, smoking

Bacterial vaginosis: a review.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a clinically definable condition that is frequently diagnosed in the primary care setting. Changes in the nomenclature, causative microorganisms, as well as treatment have caused confusion over the last century. BV is currently viewed as a shift in the normal vaginal ecosystem from a predominance of aerobic bacteria to anaerobic bacteria (Soper, 1993), resulting in a malodorous discharge. However, more than one half of clinically diagnosed patients are asymptomatic. Recent evidence indicates that the anaerobes identified as components of BV have been implicated in o

Epidemiology of bacterial vaginosis.

Studies of the prevalence of and risk factors for bacterial vaginosis are flawed by imprecision in diagnosis, failure to study large and well-characterized populations, selection bias, and failure to correct for confounding variables. Prevalences range from 5% for women without any symptoms to 25% for those with gynecologic symptoms. Although bacterial vaginosis is associated with nonwhite race and intrauterine contraceptive device use, these may represent surrogate markers for other presently unappreciated risk factors.

The microbiology of bacterial vaginosis.

A group of microorganisms are present concurrently in high concentrations in the vaginas of women with bacterial vaginosis. The major members of the group are Gardnerella vaginalis, anaerobic gram-negative rods belonging to the genera Prevotella, Porphyromonas and Bacteroides, Peptostreptococcus species, Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma urealyticum, and often Mobiluncus species. Facultative species of Lactobacillus are present in lower concentrations and are less prevalent in bacterial vaginosis than in women with a normal vaginal examination. Bacterial vaginosis a "broad overview".

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) was first reported in 1995 by Gardner and Dukes, who described the unique clinical signs and symptoms and the distinctive nature of the vaginal discharge associated with it. They also described a "new" causative organism, which they named "Haemophilus vaginalis", subsequently renamed Gardnerella vaginalis. BV is currently the most prevalent cause of infectious vaginitis among women attending for genitourinary diseases. BV has a complex microbiology. Lactobacillus populations, which are usually dominant in healthy women, are replaced by a polymicrobial group of organism
