Persistence and survival of Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts on lamb's lettuce leaves during plant growth and in washing conditions of minimally-processed salads.

Cryptosporidium is the causative agent of cryptosporidiosis, which results, among others, in profuse diarrhoea. Transmission to humans occurs via the faecal-oral route directly by contact with infected hosts or indirectly by waterborne or foodborne routes. For the latter, parasite transmission is closely linked to the oocyst's ability to persist and survive in food matrices. In this study, we evaluated the persistence and survival of Cryptosporidium oocysts in lamb's lettuce: i) during plant growth and ii) in conditions mimicking the industrial washing process applied in minimally-processed ve

[Epidemiological data on human distomatosis (Fasciola hepatica L.) in the Limousin region of France. The species of plants eaten and snail hosts].

These epidemiological studies concern 187 cases of human fasciolasis which occurred in the region of Limousin, France on a period of 24 years. Four species of plants have been eaten: Nasturtium officinale, Roripa silvestris, Taraxacum gr. officinale, Valerianella olitoria. These plants have been eaten during all months of the year, but with higher numbers in July-August and from November to February. The cases of human fasciolasis almost take place on all years, but their numbers are high in years showing a very important infestation of cattle by Fasciola hepatica. In 2/3 of cases, the plants

Sensitive Detection of Foodborne Parasitic Larvae Using a Sieving-qPCR Workflow: Application to Angiostrongylus cantonensis.

Contaminated food and water represent potential infection sources of Angiostrongylus cantonensis, a parasitic nematode with significant zoonotic potential. Limited environmental surveillance may be due to the absence of simple and reliable screening methods. Different methods of A. cantonensis DNA detection were evaluated on lamb's lettuce (Valerianella locusta). First, three methods for concentrating larvae from water samples spiked with 1 and 10 third-stage larvae (L3) were compared: simple sedimentation and two sieving techniques. Then, two DNA extraction modifications were assessed on spik

Influence of pH, ion composition and carbohydrate recognition on the attachment of Cryptosporidium parvum to lamb's lettuce.

Cryptosporidiosis is a worldwide infection caused by the protozoan parasites Cryptosporidium spp., which are mainly transmitted directly from infected hosts but also indirectly through contaminated food and water. The disease poses significant health impacts, particularly to vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals, including those living with HIV/AIDS. Of the food-borne Cryptosporidium spp. outbreaks reported worldwide, consumption of leafy greens is frequently associated. The different physical and chemical properties of each type of leafy

Factors Required for Adhesion of Salmonella enterica Serovar Typhimurium to Lactuca sativa (Lettuce).

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium is a major cause of foodborne gastroenteritis. Recent outbreaks of infections by S. enterica serovar Typhimurium are often associated with non-animal-related food, i.e., vegetables, fruits, herbs, sprouts, and nuts. One main problem related to the consumption of fresh produce is the minimal processing, especially for leafy green salads. In this study, we focused on butterhead lettuce (Lactuca sativa) to which S. enterica serovar Typhimurium adheres at higher rates compared to Valerianella locusta, resulting in prolonged persistence. Here, we systematical
