OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of Trichomonas vaginalis in two island populations of Vanuatu using the Pap smear as the screening technique.

Lymphatic filariasis, in the Archipelago of Vanuatu, is due to Wuchereria bancrofti. The vector is Anopheles farauti, endophilic mosquito, which transmits also malaria. The level of endemicity was very high in the beginning of this century (microfilariae in blood: 60.9%, elephantiasis: 21%), and has dramatically decline now by detection and treatment of sick people (70 cases in 1986), mass chimioprophylaxis and protection against the vectors. But these actions must be continued to obtain the eradication of filariasis in the Vanuatu.

The archipelago of Vanuatu is located in the South-West Pacific at 2,000 km, East of Australia. The so-called "current" pathology is similar to the one met in Europe. Because of its geographical location, a tropical pathology is to be found with a prevalence of Malaria, intestinal nematodoses and filariases ( Wuchereria bancrofti). Leprosy , dengue, ciguatera, eosinophilic meningitis as well as Tokeleau bring its originality to this pathology.

The clinical picture of leptospirosis is often confusing and biological confirmation with reference tests (microagglutination test or isolation of the organism) is not usually possible in tropical countries where the disease remains undiagnosed. We report here the first human cases of leptospirosis in Vanuatu (South Pacific), which occurred during the 1989-1990 epidemic of dengue, and discuss the differential diagnosis of the 2 diseases.

OBJECTIVE: To use the Pap smear to establish a recent prevalence of cervical abnormalities within a select population in Vanuatu, a developing country.
METHODS: Cervical smears (n=907) were collected from Ni-Vanuatu women from both urban and rural islands within Vanuatu between August 2001 and September 2005.

Yaws has been resurgent in the island of Tanna in southern Vanatu in the 1980's. Screening, conducted in 1988 and in 1989 during a mass treatment program identified a total of 464 clinical cases from the population of 20,200, a rate of 23 per thousand. The first manifestation of a viral infection may be conjunctivitis. There are limited data on the etiology of viral conjunctivitis in Vanuatu, a country in the South Pacific Ocean. Patients presenting to one of two Vanuatu health centers with presumed infectious conjunctivitis were eligible if symptom onset was within 14 days of screening. A 23-year-old woman from Vanuatu presented to an Australian hospital with a 3-week history of a non-healing ulcer on the lower leg. A swab was submitted for a multiplex polymerase chain reaction designed to investigate genital ulcerative conditions. Haemophilus ducreyi was detected and the gene product was subsequently sequenced, confirming the diagnosis of cutaneous chancroid. The lesion responded to intramuscular benzathine penicillin. This report adds further evidence that cutaneous chancroid should be considered in the evaluation of skin ulcers in the south Pacific.

As of 2025, there is no national sign language in Vanuatu. Sign languages are natural languages that emerge in deaf communities. While studies in the United States have estimated that approximately 95% of deaf children are born into hearing families who do not sign (Mitchell & Karchmer, 2004), there is no equivalent demographic data available for Vanuatu. BACKGROUND: Scabies is a common, under-reported condition in the Pacific with acute and chronic complications. In this study we explored the prevalence of scabies in Sanma Province, Vanuatu.

Skin infections are an important health problem in Vanuatu and other Pacific island countries. In this study, 18,223 people, representing 90% of the population of the southern island of Tanna in Vanuatu, were examined. Scabies was found in 16% of those screened, with 24% of children under 10 years affected. Our review of the literature on leptospirosis in Vanatu turned up only one previous report describing 3 cases at the Central Port Vila Hospital in 1992. The purpose of this report is to describe 8 cases of leptospirosis in patients admitted to the North District Hospital on Espiritu Santo Island in 1997. There were 6 men and 2 women with a mean age of 45 +/- 16 years. At the onset of the disease patients presented fever, myalgia, and diarrhea. This paper provides accurate figures and detailed analysis of the causes of perinatal mortality in the main referral hospital in Vanuatu in 1992, and discusses possible improvements in management. The perinatal mortality rate for the Vila Central Hospital area was 30.4 per 1000 births (with a stillbirth rate of 14 per 1000). These figures include mothers who presented for the first time in labour without any antenatal care, and cases of very low birthweight (less than 1 kg). Refraction and its components were measured on 788 Melanesian children and 39 children of other races, aged 6 through 19 years, in the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu. Of the 788 Melanesian children, 766 (97.2%) were found to have uncorrected visual acuity of 6/6 or better, and 763 (96.8%) were found to have a spherical equivalent refraction between -0.25 and +1.00 D. To provide information on human papillomavirus (HPV) prevalence and the distribution of individual HPV types in Pacific Islands, we conducted a population-based survey in Vanuatu, South Pacific. Nine hundred and eighty-seven women between 18 and 64 years of age were included. GP5(+)/6(+)-mediated PCR assay was used for HPV testing. The prevalence of 44 HPV types was 28.4% corresponding to an age (world)-standardized prevalence of 25.0% [95% confidence interval (CI), 21.9%-28.0%]. Recent reports from the island of Tanna in Vanuatu suggest that yaws has resurged. We carried out a serological and clinical survey to determine the prevalence and clinical presentation of yaws on the island.
