BACKGROUND: The varicelloviruses comprise a genus within the alphaherpesvirus subfamily, and infect both humans and other mammals. Recently, next-generation sequencing has been used to generate genomic sequences of several members of the Varicellovirus genus. Here, currently available varicellovirus genomic sequences were used for phylogenetic, recombination, and genetic distance analysis.
RESULTS: A phylogenetic network including genomic sequences of individual species, was generated and suggested a potential restriction between the ungulate and non-ungulate viruses. Intraspecies genetic dis

Varicellovirus bovinealpha-5 (BoAHV-5) is a neurotropic virus that causes necrotizing meningoencephalitis in calves. This report describes two outbreaks of BoAHV-5-associated meningoencephalitis in beef cattle. The incidence was 6.2% and 12.93% for each outbreak, respectively. Lethality was 100% in both outbreaks. Neurological signs included dullness, ataxia, and circling. The main gross finding was focal malacia in the parietal and frontal cerebral cortex of five calves autopsied. Microscopically, severe necrotizing meningoencephalitis with intranuclear eosinophilic to amphophilic inclusion b

BACKGROUND: Varicellovirus bovinealpha1 (BoAHV-1) is among the most important infectious agents affecting cattle health and productivity. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of BoAHV-1 infection in Türkiye and estimate its economic impact using a meta-analytical approach. RESULTS: A total of 39 studies comprising data from 5,219 animals were included in the meta-analysis. Three analytical groups were established based on sample size and study scale: the small-scale group (SSG), large-scale group (LSG), and herd-level group (HLG). Random effects models were used for prevalence esti

INTRODUCTION: Differentiation of vaccine strains and field isolates of bovine type 1 herpesvirus Varicellovirus bovinealpha1 is an urgent task to improve the quality of diagnosis of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR). There are several approaches to solve this problem. The most successful methods are those proposed by R.W. Fulton and S.K. Chothe in 2013 and 2018, respectively. The aim of the study is to test the methods proposed by R.W. Fulton and S.K. Chothe to study the possibility of their optimization and implementation in routine laboratory diagnostics of IBR in Russia.

INTRODUCTION: Varicella-Zoster virus (VZV) is a highly contagious alpha-herpes virus. The diagnosis of chickenpox remains a difficult task especially in cases of breakthrough chickenpox, so the development of reliable laboratory tests is necessary. The simplest and most sensitive serological test for detecting antibodies in human and animal sera is the passive hemagglutination reaction (PHAR).
THE AIM: To develop of a simple, highly sensitive and specific serological tests for the detection of antibodies to VZV in human and animal blood sera.

BACKGROUND: Varicellovirus felidalpha-1 (FHV-1, previously Felid alphaherpesvirus-1) is a significant cause of upper respiratory tract disease in feline populations. Cats infected with FHV-1 show clinical signs that vary in severity. This can be due to differences in host responses and virus strain virulence. Investigating the gene transcription profiles during infections using FHV-1 strains could inform our understanding of host and viral factors contributing to disease outcomes. This study characterised the transcriptomes of Crandell-Rees feline kidney (CRFK) cells infected with field or vac

Severe disease progression, including secondary bacterial infections and sepsis, can occur both during initial infection with the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) and its reactivation in the form of herpes zoster. This remains a fairly common problem. However, in most cases, the disease proceeds without complications. In Russia and abroad, varicella is among the most common infectious causes of central nervous system involvement. The most frequent serious complications are skin lesions and associated bacterial infections. The exact causes of these conditions are still not fully understood. Therefo

Varicellovirus suidalpha1 has brought huge economic losses to the global pig industry. However, existing vaccines do not provide sufficient protection against circulating strains. In this study, the molecular characteristics of Varicellovirus suidalpha1 isolates were tracked to provide a basis for the prevention and treatment of Varicellovirus suidalpha1. In this study, samples were collected from a pig farm suspected of Varicellovirus suidalpha1 infection in China, and a Varicellovirus suidalpha1 strain DML-5 was successfully isolated. Phylogenetic analysis showed that DML-5 belonged to genot

Both the herpes zoster virus and suid herpesvirus type 1 (SuHV-1) belong to the Varicellovirus genus of the α-herpesviridae subfamily. They may cause opportunistic infections especially in patients with kidney diseases, varying from latent illness to overt lethality. Under these circumstances, impaired renal function is both the culprit for and victim of the infection. However, fulminant eruption of severe skin herpes zoster in lupus nephritis (LN) patients under prolonged immunosuppressive therapy is rare and even more rarely seen is the SuHV-1 encephalitis in human. Facing the evolution of t

Varicellovirus bovinealpha1 (BoAHV-1) and 5 (BoAHV-5) are important pathogens associated with respiratory, reproductive, and neurological disorders in cattle, remaining globally relevant since their first reports in the 1950s and 1960s. Envelope glycoproteins B, C, and D play critical roles in viral attachment and fusion, making them key targets for immune responses and promising candidates for vaccine development. This study aimed to design a multi-epitope protein using immunoinformatic approaches, incorporating highly conserved, antigenic B- and T- cell epitopes with strong predicted MHC-bin

An outbreak of ulcerative stomatitis was observed in a donkey (Equus asinus) dairy herd. Similar lesions were also observed on the dams' udders and, sporadically, in genital areas. The lesions typically resolved in 1-3 weeks. An α-herpesvirus, Varicellovirus, genetically related to equid herpesvirus type 3, was identified.

Bovine herpesviral meningoencephalitis (BHM) is an infectious disease of cattle caused by bovine alphaherpesvirus 1 (BoAHV1; Orthoherpesviridae, Varicellovirus bovinealpha1) or 5 (BoAHV5; Orthoherpesviridae, Varicellovirus bovinealpha5). Cases are frequent in South America, but the disease is sporadic in other countries. Infection typically leads to fatal necrotizing meningoencephalitis that most often affects calves <1-y-old and yearlings under stressful situations, including weaning, large concentrations of animals, transport, and introduction of cattle from other locations into a herd. The pathogenesis of enteric zoster, a rare debilitating complication of reactivation of latent varicella-zoster virus (VZV) in the enteric nervous system (ENS), is largely unknown. Infection of monkeys with the closely related Varicellovirus simian varicella virus (SVV) mimics VZV disease in humans. In this study, we determined the applicability of the SVV nonhuman primate model to study Varicellovirus infection of the ENS. We confirmed VZV infection of the gut in latently infected adults and demonstrated that SVV DNA was similarly present in gut of monkeys latently infected with SVV using qua

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Varicellovirus bovinealpha1 and Varicellovirus bovinealpha5 (BoAHV-1 and BoAHV-5), respectively, are widely distributed pathogens that cause distinct clinical conditions in cattle including infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, infectious pustular vulvovaginitis/balanoposthitis, and meningoencephalitis. Due to the establishment of viral latency, controlling these infections is challenging, and vaccination remains the most effective strategy. In this study, vaccine candidates targeting both BoAHV-1 and BoAHV-5 were developed.

The herpes virus was named by the Greek physician Hippocrates who called it herpes because the lesions appeared near each other and were vesicular. Alphaherpesvirinae, Betaherpesvirinae, and Gammaherpesvirinae are subfamilies of the human herpes virus family. The Alphaherpesvirinae subfamily includes the simplex viruses-HSV-1 and HSV-2-and varicellovirus-varicella zoster virus. There are more than 200 members of the Herpesviridae family capable of infecting different species, 8 of which are known to cause disease in humans. The simplex viruses can cause lifelong genital infections, and despite

Herpesviruses of the genus Varicellovirus are known to infect and cause disease in a variety of ruminant species, but the impact of cervid herpesvirus 2 (CvHV2) in reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) is mostly unknown. Reindeer is a circum-polar species with a total estimated number of more than 5 million animals. Mortality may reach high values, as in northern Norway, especially in calves (37%; 2005-2006), and disease can potentially account for some of this mortality. CvHV2 has been isolated during a natural outbreak of infectious keratoconjunctivitis, indicating an etiologal link. Serological scre

Feline herpesvirus type 1 (HVF-1) is the infectious agent of feline viral rhinotracheitis. The main clinical signs are cough, nasal and eye discharge, fever, conjunctivitis and sneezing. Although the occurrence of the virus is known in some regions of Brazil, in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul (MS), there is no epidemiological information about its frequency. Thus, this study aimed to determine the frequency of feline herpesvirus type 1 in the region, and to evaluate its possible association with clinical and epidemiological factors. Ocular, nasal and oropharyngeal swabs, and blood were colle

Feline herpesvirus type 1 (FHV-1) is a common causative agent of domestic cats' rhinotracheitis in domestic cats, and it increasingly threatens wild felids worldwide. The endangered snow leopard (Panthera uncia) belongs to the family Felidae, and it is the top predator on the Tibetan Plateau. Here we report the identification and isolation of FHV-1 from three dead captive snow leopards that presented with sneezing and rhinorrhea. To explore the relationship between FHV-1 and their deaths, organs and nasal swabs were collected for histopathology, viral isolation and sequence analysis. The resul
