Presentation of fused vas deferens.

Transverse testicular ectopia is a rare condition that usually presents as a unilateral nonpalpable testis and a contralateral descended testis with an associated hernia. Currently, with the use of diagnostic laparoscopy, transverse testicular ectopia is found before groin exploration. We reviewed 2 cases that were referred to our institution. Both patients had a common vas deferens with proximal fusion. To our knowledge, a fused vas deferens has only been reported three other times in published reports. Our second case is unique in that this is the first time a common vas deferens has been re

Congenital vas deferens--ureteral connection.

Congenital drainage of the vas deferens into a ureter permits retrograde passage of urine through the vas to the epididymis. If this anomaly is accompanied by urinary tract pathology with vesicoureteral reflux, hydroureter, stasis, and infection, the passage of urine into the vas can very well lead to epididymitis of a chronic or recurring nature and secondary scrotal abscesses. Two cases of this rare anomalous connection are presented in which such scrotal infections occurred. The diagnosis should be suspected on clinical grounds and can be confirmed by cystograms in which the dye refluxes up

Vas deferens anomalies in paediatric age.

Vas deferens anomalies have been observed with high incidence in cystic fibrosis patients, whereas the overall incidence in the general population is estimated less than 0.05%. Vas deferens anomalies are sometimes associated with renal abnormalities and they are due to a damage occurring within the first weeks of gestational age. In other cases they can be the expression of a mild form of cystic fibrosis. The authors report on 7 patients with 10 anomalies of vas deferens: 2 patients with cystic fibrosis; 3 patients with urinary tract anomalies; 2 patients with no evidence of cystic fibrosis an

[Three cases of vas deferens calcification].

Three patients with calcification of the bilateral vas deferens, revealed by plain X-ray, pelvic computerized tomography and/or vesiculography, are reported. Although they came to our department because of acute left epididymitis, right ureteral calculus and right undescended testis respectively, these diseases were not the causative factors for the calcification. Since no other probable causes including tuberculosis and diabetes-mellitus were found, the cause of disease was unknown.

Congenital absence of the vas deferens.

Fourteen personal cases of agenesia of the vas deferens, bilateral in 12 and unilateral in 2, are described. In 13 of the cases the diagnosis was confirmed by surgical exploration. In most of the cases cytologic examination of aspiration biopsy specimens and histologic examination of surgical specimens of the testes showed that spermatogenesis was normal. The appearance of biopsy specimens of the epididymides were normal except for a certain degree of interstitital fibrosis and dilation of the ductus epididymidis. Endeavours to produce an artificial spermatocele with the aid of an isolated fla

Observations on the isolated vas deferens.

Experiments on the isolated vas deferens of guinea-pig and rat had unexpected results in several ways. The effect of stimulation of the hypogastric nerve was not abolished, but increased, by parasympathetic blocking agents or by sympathetic blocking agents such as dihydroergotamine and phenoxybenzamine. The sensitization is considered not due to anticholinesterase activity of the drugs. Prolonged contact with a stimulating agent evoked rhythmic contractions. Addition as well as removal of a drug from the bath caused a response. The results of experiments involving chronic denervation, addition

Ectopic Vas Deferens in a Male Infant.

Vas deferens ectopia is a rare congenital anomaly associated with urinary tract and anorectal anomalies. It is important to recognize the complex embryology of the reproductive, urinary, and lower enteric systems to understand how these processes can go awry.1 As the ureteric bud arises from the mesonephric duct, a failure of the channel that connects the two to obliterate can produce an ectopic vas deferens connected to the ureter or bladder.2 We present a 2-month-old male with vas deferens ectopia. Our patient uniquely did not present with associated anorectal anomalies or urinary tract symp

Unilateral segmental dysplasia of the vas deferens.

A healthy 35-year-old male presented for vasectomy after fathering two children. Due to difficulty palpating the left vas, the patient was taken to the operating room for scrotal exploration and vasectomy. The left vas was absent; however, a 1.2 cm pearly nodule was identified in the scrotum along its suspected course. This nodule was excised, found to contain thick white pasty fluid, and confirmed vas deferens by pathology. The patient was found to have normal kidneys on renal ultrasound and was indeed a carrier for cystic fibrosis gene mutations. We herein discuss management and implications

Beware the Looping Vas Deferens in Orchidopexy.

A looping vas deferens may be present in up to 20% of undescended testes located within or proximal to the inguinal canal. This associated abnormality is vulnerable to transection during orchidopexy. We present an example of a very long looping vas to emphasize the importance of inspection for this anomaly, and demonstrate the extreme extent that a looping vas may extend. Identification of the vas among cord structures may provide false reassurance of normal ductal anatomy. Examination for a looping vas by inspecting structures caudal to the testis should occur at an early opportunity during o

Congenital Bilateral Absence of the Vas Deferens.

Congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens (CBAVD) is clinically characterized by the absence of the bilateral vas deferens; the main clinical manifestation is infertility, accounting for 1-2% of male infertility cases. CBAVD may be accompanied by congenital abnormalities in the urogenital system and cystic fibrosis (CF)-related clinical manifestations. CBAVD can develop as a mild manifestation of CF or can be isolated. The main pathogenic mechanism of CBAVD is gene mutation, and CBAVD and CF have a common genetic mutation background. CFTR mutation is the main pathogenic cause of CBAVD a

Ectopic Vas Deferens Causing Recurrent Epididymo-Orchitis.

Vasal ectopia is a rare congenital anomaly arising from the close embryonic relationship between the proximal vas precursor and the common mesonephric duct. We present a case of an adolescent male with recurrent epididymitis with scrotal and inguinal abscesses found to have right ectopic vas draining into the bladder.

Epididymal and vas deferens immaturity in cryptorchidism.

Cryptorchidism is associated with impaired spermatogenesis and, at times, sterility. Early orchiopexy has been advocated as a possible means to prevent spermatogenic impairment and infertility in patients with cryptorchidism. This retrospective study is derived from data obtained from 74 cases that were observed during a period of approximately 10 years at our hospital. Particular attention was devoted to epididymal and vas deferens histological status. Of the 47 epididymides and vas deferens examined only 2 epididymides and 2 vas deferens showed histological maturity. The remainder showed var

Crossed ectopic testis with common vas deferens.

Crossed ectopic testis is an uncommon anomaly. A 10-month-old boy with a crossed ectopic testis and a common vas deferens is presented. At operation 2 testes were in the left inguinal canal. The seminal vesiculogram showed that both vasa deferentia fused to form a common lumen, and then formed a common stem on the left side and opened into the posterior urethra. The spermatic arteriogram revealed that each testis was supplied from the right and left sides, respectively. No testis or vas deferens was located in the right retroperitoneal space. These features suggested that the testes developed

Ultrasound of the Normal and Abnormal Vas Deferens.

The extrapelvic portion of the vas deferens is readily visible with ultrasound but often overlooked. Several publications have described the scanning technique and the normal anatomy of the vas deferens. Sonographic evaluation of the vas deferens provides critical information in the workup of male infertility. Obstruction, inflammatory conditions, and neoplasms of the vas deferens can also be diagnosed with ultrasound. Knowledge of the normal and abnormal appearance of the vas deferens improves scans of the scrotum and expands the conditions that can be recognized and accurately diagnosed with

Duplication of the Vas Deferens: A Rare Anomaly.

Background: Duplication of the vas deferens, a rare congenital anomaly of the pelvic anatomy, is often an incidental finding during surgeries involving the spermatic cord, such as inguinal hernia repair, varicocelectomy, orchidopexy, and vasectomy. Case Report: A 25-year-old male presented to our surgical outpatient clinic with bilateral swelling in the inguinal region. A diagnosis of bilateral inguinal hernia was established. While performing spermatic cord dissection during hernioplasty, a duplicated vas deferens was revealed within the left spermatic cord. Doppler ultrasonography confirmed
