Imaging of the vasa vasorum.

Neovascularization of the arterial walls by adventitial vasa vasorum appears to participate in the process of atherosclerosis progression and destabilization. Although the biological mechanisms associated with plaque instability are still unclear, the uncontrolled formation of intraplaque neovessels appears to contribute to the development of complex atheromatous lesions. Recent reports have described the use of several ultrasound-based techniques for the real-time detection of intraplaque neovascularization. Preliminary studies in animal models have shown that the detection and characterizati

[The vasa vasorum of the arteries].

Nourishment of arteries is accomplished by diffusion from the lumen of the vessel and from vasa vasorum. Most normal arteries have an extensive network of vasa in the adventitia that arise from branch points of parent arteries. When the thickness of arteries exceeds the ability of simple diffusion of nutrients from the lumen (larger muscular of atherosclerotic arteries), vasa extend into the media and intima. Vasa in the intima-media arise predominantly from adventitial vasa, but can arise from the lumen in vascular grafts and recanalized arteries after thrombosis. Vasa respond to vasoactive s

Vasa vasorum of the intracranial arteries.

Most of the major extracranial arteries have vasa vasorum which play an important role in some pathological conditions. However, in the intracranial arteries, the existence of vasa vasorum and their pathological implication have not been adequately investigated. We examined the distribution and incidence of vasa vasorum in the major cerebral arteries and their relationships to certain clinical factors in 50 autopsy cases performed between 1987 and 1994. By light microscopy, vasa vasorum were found in 36 of 50 patients. Of 36 patients, vasa vasorum in 30 cases were localizedly observed in the t

Topologic distributions of vasa vasorum and lymphatic vasa vasorum in the aortic adventitia--Implications for the prevalence of aortic diseases.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Vasa vasorum (VV) and lymphatic vasa vasorum (LVV) form their own networks in the adventitia. VV supply the aorta with nutrition and oxygen; however, the distribution and role of LVV remains to be determined. The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in the distribution of VV and LVV along the aorta. METHODS: Aortic samples were obtained from 22 autopsy cases without medical history of aortic diseases. Aortic segments were classified as arch (Ar), descending thoracic (De), suprarenal abdominal (S-Ab), and infrarenal abdominal (I-Ab). Adventitial VV and LVV

Corkscrew Collateral Vessels in Buerger Disease: Vasa Vasorum or Vasa Nervorum.

PURPOSE: To investigate the origin of "corkscrew" collateral vessels around the occluded popliteal artery in patients with Buerger disease by Doppler ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in tandem with digital subtraction angiography (DSA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between January 2013 and June 2015, 42 patients diagnosed with Buerger disease were identified retrospectively. Patients in whom occlusion of the popliteal artery was found on DSA of the lower extremity were subjected to Doppler US and MR imaging prospectively. Fifteen of 42 patients were identified as having the requi

Dysglycemia and the Density of the Coronary Vasa Vasorum.

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between dysglycemia and the coronary artery vasa vasorum density. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The left anterior descending coronary artery was removed from 57 deceased individuals during autopsy, and the capillaries in the vessel wall were identified using fluorescent immunohistochemical staining. HbA1c was determined in postmortem whole blood for each individual. The density of the vasa vasorum in the intima-media and the adventitia was manually quantified and recorded by readers unaware of the individual's other characterist

[The vasa vasorum in the veins of the spermatic cord].

Vasa vasorum is a vascular ensemble with nutritional role for the vascular wall. It's has the origin and the end at the surface of the bloods vessels. In the thickness of the external and internal tunics it represents by a capillary circulatory network. At the level of the adventitia of the veins, arterial vessels and vessels with a larger size, with a similar structure with the veins, has been observed. At the level of the middle tunic was observed capillary vasa vasorum. The density of the capillaries is bigger to the external tunic and the capillaries are in a smaller number to the internal

Carotid pseudostring sign from vasa vasorum collaterals.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the spectral and color Doppler imaging findings in 2 cases of internal carotid artery occlusion with vasa vasorum collateral flow, which we term the "pseudostring sign." METHODS: Spectral and color Doppler imaging findings in both cases were reviewed. Magnetic resonance angiography in 2 cases and conventional angiography in 1 case were also reviewed. RESULTS: Both patients had color Doppler images showing that the internal carotid artery was a narrow, stringlike vessel with arterial flow that had normal spectral Doppler features (velocity < 125 cm/s with a normal wavef

Vasa vasorum: The role in intracranial physiology and pathophysiology.

BACKGROUND: Vasa vasorum (VVs) is a Latin word representing vessels of vessels. VVs are usually found on the adventitia of the parent vessel and infrequently reach the media and intima, depending on the size and type of the parent vessels and physiological and pathological conditions. The VVs include arteries, capillaries, veins, and lymphatic vessels, involving the oxygenation and nourishment of the vessel's wall to sustain its healthy state. Accumulated studies have revealed that VVs are involved in various intracranial lesions, including atherosclerotic diseases, aneurysms, and shunt diseas

Nicotine induces vasa vasorum stenosis in the aortic wall.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a vascular disease that involves aortic wall dilation. Cigarette smoking is an established risk factor and rupture, and nicotine may be a major contributor to the onset of AAA. In humans the condition is associated with stenosis of the vasa vasorum (VV), which may be caused by nicotine. In this study, we evaluated the effects of nicotine on VV pathology. After 4 weeks of nicotine administration to rats using an osmotic pump, the VV patency rate in the nicotine administration group was significantly lower than that in the control group. The levels of Ki-67, a

Vasa vasorum: another cause of the carotid string sign.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Our purpose was to describe a variant of the carotid string sign that may be associated with a completely occluded vessel and to consider possible pathophysiological mechanisms for this observation. METHODS: Carotid angiography was performed in three patients with suspected carotid stenosis and in a fourth with carotid dissection. Surgery was performed in one of the patients with carotid stenosis. RESULTS: On all angiograms, instead of a single linear or curvilinear contrast "string," either single or multiple serpiginous channels were seen. In one case, such a channe

Vasa vasorum of superficial collecting lymphatics of human thigh.

Collecting lymphatics were obtained from human thigh fat for light microscopy and tridimensional reconstruction at time of operation for varicose veins. No patient had lymphedema and routine sections showed no inflammation or notable pathologic alteration of the surrounding soft tissue. Abundant vasa vasorum was observed around the musculature of superficial collecting lymphatics of human thigh. Within intervalvular portions of the lymphatic collectors where the muscle coat was thicker and more compact, the vasa vasorum penetrated between smooth muscle cells and was in contact with the endothe

Graft vascular disease in the great vessels and vasa vasorum.

To determine whether the great vessels were subject to transplantation-associated arteriosclerosis (graft vascular disease) we studied sections of aorta and pulmonary arteries from 19 cardiac explant cases. Sections of the same vessels from five autopsied hearts from patients who had received liver and/or kidney transplants with immunotherapy as well as from eight recipient hearts served as controls. In addition, eight donor hearts (three aortae and eight pulmonary arteries) that were not used for heart transplantation were examined. Intimal proliferation was noted in the aorta but affected th

Vasa vasorum formation is associated with rupture of intracranial aneurysms.

OBJECTIVE: Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) has a poor outcome despite modern advancements in medical care. The development of a novel therapeutic strategy to prevent rupture of intracranial aneurysms (IAs) or a novel diagnostic marker to predict rupture-prone lesions is thus mandatory. Therefore, in the present study, the authors established a rat model in which IAs spontaneously rupture and examined this model to clarify histopathological features associated with rupture of lesions. METHODS: Female Sprague Dawley rats were subjected to bilateral ovariectomy; the ligation of the left common car

Hypoperfusion of the Adventitial Vasa Vasorum Develops an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm.

The aortic wall is perfused by the adventitial vasa vasorum (VV). Tissue hypoxia has previously been observed as a manifestation of enlarged abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). We sought to determine whether hypoperfusion of the adventitial VV could develop AAAs. We created a novel animal model of adventitial VV hypoperfusion with a combination of a polyurethane catheter insertion and a suture ligation of the infrarenal abdominal aorta in rats. VV hypoperfusion caused tissue hypoxia and developed infrarenal AAA, which had similar morphological and pathological characteristics to human AAA. In h
