Vascular capacitance following preoptic recess lesions.

Vascular capacitance was studied in anesthetized control (CONT) animals and in rats after electrolytic ablation of the periventricular tissue surrounding the anteroventral third cerebral ventricle (AV3V-X). Blood volume (BV) was determined by use of radiolabeled serum albumin, and mean arterial pressure (MAP) and central venous pressure (CVP) were continuously measured. Mean circulatory filling pressure (MCFP) was calculated by use of MAP and CVP obtained during circulatory arrest induced by inflation of a right atrial balloon during BV expansion and contraction. MCFP-BV relationships were cal

Morphine decreases peripheral vascular resistance and increases capacitance in man.

The response of the human peripheral circulation to morphine in large doeses independent of cardiac and respiratory influences has not been delineated. In 28 patients during cardiopulmonary bypass, alterations of peripheral vascular resistance (PVR) and capacitance in response to rapid arterial injection of morphine, 0.5 mg/kg or 1 mg/kg alone, or preceeded by promethazine, 1 mg/kg, naloxone, 10 mug/kg, or naloxone, 20 mug/kg, were recorded over 15 min at a constant perfusion rate. Both doses of morphine decreased PVR by 46 percent at 2 min, with values returning to control at 9 min. When prom

Responses of abdominal vascular capacitance to stimulation of splachnic nerves.

In chloralose-anesthetized dogs the abdominal circulation was vascularly isolated without opening the abdominal cavity. The region was perfused at constant flow through the aorta and drained at constant pressure from the inferior vena cava. Changes in resistance were calculated from changes in perfusion pressure and changes in capacitance were calculated by integrating changes in venous outflow. Stimulation of both splanchnic nerves at 20 Hz increased resistance by 135% and reduced capacitance by 7.20 ml kg-1. The capacitance responses at 1 and 2 Hz (3.42 and 5.43 ml kg-1) were 48 and 67% of t

Influence of lung inflation reflex on vascular capacitance in the systemic circulation.

The effects of sustained lung inflation on systemic vascular capacitance (SVC), systemic vascular resistance (SVR), and cardiac sympathetic efferent nerve activity (SENA) were investigated in anesthetized dogs. By use of a total cardiopulmonary bypass, the lungs were inflated to tracheal pressures of 10, 15, and 20 mmHg. Tracheal pressures of 10, 15, and 20 mmHg increased system vascular capacitance by 1.4, 3.1, and 4.3 ml/kg and decreased systemic vascular resistance by 0.11, 0.15, and 0.16 mmHg.kg.min-ml-1, respectively, at low carotid sinus pressure (CSP) of 41 mmHg. SENA showed a concomita

Effects of nitroglycerin and nitroprusside on vascular capacitance of anesthetized ganglion-blocked dogs.

To determine whether changes in vascular capacitance induced by nitroglycerin (NTG) and nitroprusside were due to changes in compliance or unstressed vascular volume, doses producing similar reductions in arterial pressure (Psa) were studied on separate days in six dogs anesthetized and ventilated with pentobarbital after splenectomy during ganglion blockade with hexamethonium. Mean circulatory filling pressure (Pmcf) was determined during transient circulatory arrest induced by acetylcholine at baseline blood volumes and after increases of 5 and 10 ml/kg. Central blood volumes (CBVs, pulmonar

Effect of enalaprilat on splanchnic vascular capacitance during acute ischemic heart failure in dogs.

This study investigates the effect of angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibition by intravenous enalaprilat (100 micrograms/kg) on splanchnic vascular capacitance during acute left ventricular failure induced by coronary microembolization in alpha-chloralose/urethan anesthetized dogs. Changes in hepatic and splenic vascular volumes were determined from organ diameters (sonomicrometry) at 15, 30, and 45 min after enalaprilat injection. Changes in vascular capacitance were assessed from organ pressure-diameter curves obtained during transient hepatic outflow occlusion. Thirty minutes after enalapr

Responses of abdominal vascular resistance and capacitance to stimulation of carotid chemoreceptors in anaesthetized dogs.

1. In anaesthetized dogs the regions of the carotid bifurcations were isolated vascularly and perfused at constant non-pulsatile pressures. The abdominal circulation was isolated vascularly, perfused at constant flow and drained through the inferior vena cava at constant pressure. Vascular resistance and capacitance responses were determined from the changes in perfusion pressure and changes in venous outflow. 2. Stimulation of carotid chemoreceptors with venous blood resulted in an increase in arterial perfusion pressure of 38% (S.E. +/- 4.6) and a decrease in vascular capacitance of 24.4 +/-

Pulmonary Vascular Capacitance as a Predictor of Vasoreactivity in Idiopathic Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension Tested by Adenosine.

BACKGROUND: Acute pulmonary vasoreactivity testing has been recommended in the diagnostic work-up of patients with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH). Pulmonary arteriolar capacitance (Cp) approximated by stroke volume divided by pulmonary pulse pressure (SV/PP) is considered as an independent predictor of mortality in patients with IPAH. OBJECTIVES: We sought to evaluate any differences in baseline and adenosine Cp between vasoreactive and non-vasoreactive IPAH patients tested with adenosine. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fourteen patients with IPAH and a vasoreactive adenosine vasor

Ryanodine receptor and capacitative Ca2+ entry in fresh preglomerular vascular smooth muscle cells.

BACKGROUND: A multiplicity of hormonal, neural, and paracrine factors regulates preglomerular arterial tone by stimulating calcium entry or mobilization. We have previously provided evidence for capacitative (store-operated) Ca2+ entry in fresh renal vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). Ryanodine-sensitive receptors (RyRs) have recently been identified in a variety of nonrenal vascular beds. METHODS: We isolated fresh rat preglomerular VSMCs with a magnetized microsphere/sieving technique; cytosolic Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) was measured with fura-2 ratiometric fluorescence. RESULTS: Ryanodine (3 micr

Pulmonary Vascular Capacitance is Associated with Vasoreactivity and Long-Term Response to Calcium Channel Blockers in Idiopathic Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify the relationship between pulmonary vascular capacitance (PVC) and vasoreactivity in patients with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH), and the value of PVC in predicting long-term response to CCB treatment. METHODS: Pulmonary vasodilator testing with inhaling iloprost was performed in 308 newly diagnosed IPAH patients. Acute vasodilator-responsive patients accepted CCBs treatment. Patients who benefit from long-term CCB were defined as those being in World Health Organization (WHO) functional class II or I after at least 1 year on CCB monoth

Capacitative Ca2+ entry is graded with degree of intracellular Ca2+ store depletion in bovine vascular endothelial cells.

1. In endothelial cells, release of Ca2+ from endoplasmic reticulum (ER) Ca2+ stores activates Ca2+ influx via the capacitative Ca2+ entry (CCE) pathway. In cultured bovine pulmonary artery endothelial cells, we investigated the relationship between intracellular Ca2+ store load and CCE activity, as well as the kinetics of CCE activation and deactivation, by simultaneously measuring changes in [Ca2+]i and unidirectional manganese (Mn2+) entry through the CCE pathway. 2. Submaximal concentrations of ATP caused quantal release of Ca2+ from the ER, resulting in a dose-dependent depletion of Ca2+

Computer simulation of circulation in patient with total cavo-pulmonary connection: inter-relationship of cardiac and vascular pressure, flow, resistance and capacitance.

The aim is to develop a computer model representative of the circulation in a patient with a uni-ventricular heart surgically palliated by a total cavo-pulmonary connection (TCPC). The effects of known hazardous exposures on this type of circulation are investigated. A model of the cardiovascular system is built using standard components such as transmission lines, restrictors and capacitances. The chamber of the heart consists of a volume connected to checkvalves, and an oscillating source flow connected to the volume represents the pumping of the heart. The following are simulated: exposure

Pulmonary arterial capacitance in children with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension and pulmonary arterial hypertension associated with congenital heart disease: relation to pulmonary vascular resistance, exercise capacity, and survival.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), whether idiopathic PAH (iPAH) or PAH associated with congenital heart disease (aPAH), carries high morbidity and mortality. Low pulmonary arterial capacitance (PAC), defined as right ventricular stroke volume/pulmonary artery pulse pressure, is a risk factor for mortality in adults with PAH. However, the relation of PAC to pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR), exercise endurance, and survival is poorly defined in children. METHODS: Catheterization and clinical data of children with PAH (mean pulmonary artery pressure >25 mm Hg) were

Impact of pulmonary artery capacitance index on early outcomes following paediatric heart transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary artery capacitance is a relatively novel measurement associated with adverse outcomes in pulmonary arterial hypertension. We sought to determine if preoperative indexed pulmonary artery capacitance was related to outcomes in paediatric heart transplant recipients, describe the changes in indexed pulmonary artery capacitance after transplantation, and compare its discriminatory ability to predict outcomes as compared to conventional predictors. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of paediatric patients who underwent heart transplant at our centre from July 2014 to May

Effect of morphine on limb capacitance and resistance vessels.

1. The actions of 15 mg of intravenous morphine on hand and forearm capacitance and resistance vessels were studied with venous occlusion plethysmography. 2. In contrast to a 5% increase in forearm venous volume, intravenous morphine caused a 26% decrease in hand venous volume. This hand venoconstriction was confirmed by finding an increase in hand venous tone. The effects of morphine on hand veins were attenuated by intraarterial phentolamine and blocked by intravenous naloxone. 3. Whereas morphine had no significant effect on forearm resistance vessels, it caused a 70% reduction in hand vasc

Central nervous control of venous tone. III. Responses of capacitance and resistance vessels of skin to bulbar and hypothalamic stimulation.

Electrical stimulation of 350 points in the bulbar formation of 35 dogs under chloralose anaesthesia demonstrated the presence of sites producing increase or decrease of systemic arterial pressure (SAP) in the same general morphological limits of bulbar pressor and depressor regions as described by earlier authors. Simultaneous recording of pressure changes in the cutaneous vessels however demonstrated that pressure changes in these vessels did not correspond to the pressor or depressor effects of the SAP. Instead, responses were obtained in which pressures in cutaneous capacitance and resista

[Vascular responses to tilting in paraplegic subject compared to normal (author's transl)].

1 Vascular tone is higher in paraplegics than in normals, both in capacitance and resistance vessels. This is possibly correlated with the increase in circulating catecholamines which has recently been reported. 2 Tilting at 30 degrees from horizontal induces a hydrostatic increase in transmural pressure in the affected vascular bed. This pressure change causes: an initial decrease in resistance, followed by a progressive increase which can be explained by the Bayliss reflex. The time sequence and amplitude of the responses are comparable for normal and paraplegic subjects; an increase in vasc

Tetralogy of Fallot with congenital diaphragmatic hernia and left lung hypoplasia: assessment of the adequacy of the peripheral pulmonary vascular growth after hernia repair.

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia is a life-threatening condition frequently associated with various congenital cardiac diseases. In congenital diaphragmatic hernia associated with tetralogy of Fallot, central pulmonary artery size of the affected side may not reflect the capacitance of peripheral pulmonary vascular beds. We report a case of congenital diaphragmatic hernia associated with tetralogy of Fallot, which was repaired after assessing the adequacy of the pulmonary vascular beds by intra-operative pulmonary blood flow study.

Blood reservoir function in patients with Fontan circulation and asplenia syndrome.

Splanchnic circulation constitutes a major portion of the vasculature capacitance and plays an important role in maintaining blood perfusion. Because patients with asplenia syndrome lack this vascular bed as a blood reservoir, they may have a unique blood volume and distribution, which may be related to their vulnerability to the haemodynamic changes often observed in clinical practice. During cardiac catheterisation, the mean circulatory filling pressure was calculated with the Valsalva manoeuvre in 19 patients with Fontan circulation, including 5 patients with asplenia syndrome. We also meas

A CMOS VEGF Sensor for Cancer Diagnosis Using a Peptide Aptamer-Based Functionalized Microneedle.

This paper presents the first CMOS Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) sensor for cancer diagnosis directly from human blood. The sensor incorporates a peptide aptamer-based microneedle that allows the detection of electrochemical reactions with VEGF. This results in a capacitance change between the microneedles and then reads out by a two-step capacitance-to-digital converter (CDC). The proposed two-step CDC consists of a coarse 5b slope ADC and a fine 14b continuous-time delta-sigma modulator (CTDSM). During slow peptide-binding, the slope ADC performs a coarse conversion and the resul
