Ultrasonic-Assisted Preparation of Biodiesel Products from Vegetable Oils.

Utilizing vegetable oil as a sustainable feedstock, this study presents an innovative approach to ultrasonic-assisted transesterification for biodiesel synthesis. This alkaline-catalyzed procedure harnesses ultrasound as a potent energy input, facilitating the rapid conversion of extra virgin olive oil into biodiesel. In this demonstration, the reaction is run in an ultrasonic bath under ambient conditions for 15 min, requiring a 1:6 molar ratio of extra virgin olive oil to methanol and a minimum amount of KOH as the catalyst. The physiochemical properties of biodiesel are also reported. Empha

Antioxidant Properties of Gluten-Free Pasta Enriched with Vegetable By-Products.

The only therapy for coeliac disease patients is to completely avoid foods containing gluten, a protein complex common in several small-grain cereals. However, many alternative gluten-free foods available on the market present nutritional deficiencies. Therefore, the aim of this research was to evaluate the composition and the antioxidant properties of gluten-free pasta enriched with 10% or 15% of tomato waste or linseed meal, two food industry by-products. The traits analysed were protein, lipid, ash and fibre content, heat damage, tocols, carotenoids and phenolics composition (by HPLC), anti

Comprehensive quantitative profiling of vegetable oil oxidation products by NMR-based oxylipidomics.

Lipid oxidation is one the major causes of food deterioration. Current advancement in mechanistic understanding is limited by the lack of high-throughput methods that can simultaneously quantify a wide range of oxidation product classes, such as lipid hydroperoxides, epoxides, ketones, hydroxides, and aldehydes. Here, we introduce an NMR-based 'oxylipidomics' platform by providing the annotation of 42 substructures formed during lipid oxidation in vegetable oils. The annotated substructures accounted for respectively 93, 90 and 70% of the oxidation products of triolein, trilinolein, and trilin

Threshold and nonlinear responses of vegetation productivity to extreme precipitation in Tajikistan.

Extreme precipitation strongly influences vegetation productivity in water-limited ecosystems, yet how different precipitation extremes regulate productivity, and whether these relationships vary across mountainous environments, remain poorly understood. Here, we combined the CASA model with an XGBoost-SHAP interpretability framework to quantify the associations between extreme precipitation characteristics and net primary productivity (NPP) across the arid mountain ecosystems of Tajikistan. Extreme precipitation exhibited pronounced spatial heterogeneity, with wet-extreme hotspots concentrate

Optimizing fruit and vegetable by-products/wastes exploitation: diversity, safety and biotechnological innovations based on lactic acid bacteria.

Over the last few years, global demand for fruit and vegetable production has increased as the world's population and demographics have shifted toward healthier lifestyles. Together, the agri-food industry has continued to grow worldwide, driven by advances in planting technology and the optimization of production processes, resulting in the generation of massive agricultural residues. These residues account for almost 50% of the primary material biomass, and they are rich in high-value components such as antioxidants, pigments, flavors, and dietary fibers. In this context, the circular econom

Fruit and Vegetable By-Products as Postharvest Tissue Fractions: A Raw-Material Framework for Plant-Based Food Development.

Fruit and vegetable by-products can be interpreted more usefully as postharvest crop-derived tissue fractions than as generic waste streams or sources of recoverable compounds. This integrative review synthesizes evidence on plant tissues, postharvest quality, stabilization, safety, and analytical characterization to develop a tissue-to-raw-material framework for plant-based food development. The framework begins with crop source, cultivar or maturity, organ/tissue identity, and postharvest history, and then links these variables to stabilization, safety screening, analytical evidence, intende

Haptens Optimization Using Molecular Modeling and Paper-Based Immunosensor for On-Site Detection of Carbendazim in Vegetable Products.

Carbendazim is a benzimidazole fungicide widely used in the prevention and control of vegetable diseases. However, if misused, it may result in residues in agricultural products, not only reducing vegetable quality but also posing potential risks to human health. Currently, the on-site rapid detection technology for carbendazim still faces challenges, including insufficient antibody specificity and low sensitivity, which hinder its ability to meet practical regulatory requirements. Therefore, this study screened a rational hapten structure by applying a computer-aided hapten design and obtaine

Grow against the flow: The impact of off-season vegetable production in Cambodia.

Vegetable production is strongly seasonal, creating income volatility for smallholder farmers and occasionally high prices for consumers. The ability to produce vegetables outside their regular growing season can enhance farmers' incomes and income stability, yet empirical evidence remains limited. This study evaluates the impact of training farmers in Cambodia on off-season production technologies for yardlong beans, tomatoes, and brassicas during the hot-dry and wet seasons. Using survey data collected from 172 intervention and 179 control farmers two and three years after the training began

Increased spread of global flash droughts threatens vegetation productivity resilience.

Flash drought (faster-developing drought) has been pervasively intensified, posing detrimental constraints on vegetation productivity. However, the potential expansion of flash droughts from flash drought hotspots to non-hotspots and its associated risks to vegetation productivity remain unknown. Furthermore, the divergence in the underlying drivers governing vegetation productivity responses to flash and slow droughts (slower-developing droughts) is unclear. We quantify the dominant drivers underlying vegetation productivity resilience (the departure of productivity anomalies after drought ef

Overcompensation of vegetation productivity after late-spring frost in the Northern Hemisphere.

Late-spring frost can disrupt plant growth, yet the extent to which vegetation recovers and compensates for frost-induced productivity loss remains poorly understood. Using eddy-covariance carbon flux data, satellite-derived gross primary productivity and solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence across the Northern Hemisphere, and multi-year frost manipulative experiments, we show that overcompensation, in which post-frost recovery exceeds loss, occurs in 21.5-41.0% of events, with annual productivity exceeding the non-frost baseline. Overcompensation is strongest at high latitudes, reflecting r

Zoonotic parasitic organisms on vegetables: Impact of production system characteristics on presence, prevalence on vegetables in northwestern Iran and washing methods for removal.

Fresh vegetables are essential components of a healthy and nutritious diet, but if consumed raw without proper washing and/or disinfection, can be important agents of transmission of enteric pathogens. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of zoonotic parasites on vegetables freshly harvested and "ready to eat" vegetables from greengrocers and markets in northwestern Iran. In addition, the effect of cropping system and season on contamination levels were assessed as well as the efficacy of washing procedures to remove parasites from the vegetables. A total of 2757 samples composed of fi

Extraction, encapsulation, and bioaccessibility of polyphenols from fruit and vegetable by-products and their health effects: a decade overview.

The fruits and vegetable processing industry produces a huge amount of by-products that are rich in bioactive compounds. Therefore, the recovery of these biologically active compounds from industry by-products has received significant attention. Polyphenols are recognized for their therapeutic potential, including anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. However, they are highly sensitive and easily degraded, and also have lower bioaccessibility due to their instability in gastrointestinal conditions. To increase stability and improve the bioaccessibility of polyphenol

Effect of Hurdle Approaches Using Conventional and Moderate Thermal Processing Technologies for Microbial Inactivation in Fruit and Vegetable Products.

Thermal processing of packaged fruit and vegetable products is targeted at eliminating microbial contaminants (related to spoilage or pathogenicity) and extending shelf life using microbial inactivation or/and by reducing enzymatic activity in the food. The conventional process of thermal processing involves sterilization (canning and retorting) and pasteurization. The parameters used to design the thermal processing regime depend on the time (minutes) required to eliminate a known population of bacteria in a given food matrix under specified conditions. However, due to the effect of thermal e
