Canine transmissible venereal tumor (CTVT) is a contagious neoplasm with low metastatic potential, primarily affecting free-roaming and stray dogs. Despite its global presence, epidemiological data from some regions remain limited. This study employed a retrospective observational design and analyzed 131 CTVT cases diagnosed via cytology or histopathology at a veterinary teaching hospital in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, aiming to describe the anatomical distribution, treatment outcomes, and epidemiological patterns. Most affected dogs were mixed-breed (70.2%) and female (61.1%), with a median age o

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Canine transmissible venereal tumor (CTVT), also known as transmissible venereal sarcoma, is a naturally occurring, contagious neoplasm primarily transmitted by the transfer of viable tumor cells during mating. Although the disease is widely distributed worldwide, epidemiological and clinicopathological data from Central Asia remain scarce. This study aimed to characterize the epizootological distribution, clinical manifestations, hematological and biochemical alterations, microbiological findings, and morphological features of CTVT in dogs presented to a Veterinary Diagnos

Transmissible venereal tumours (Sticker) of 28 dogs were investigated retrospectively. Data of infection, clinical development, pathological and histological findings were evaluated. The majority of tumours was investigated with regard to their ability to produce cytokeratin in their cytoplasm. With the exception of one dog all animals had been in an African or Southern European country some weeks before the tumour was recognized for the first time. Multiple growth was a common feature of the transmissible venereal tumour; they showed low tendency to infiltrate the surrounding tissues. No case

Canine transmissible venereal tumour (CTVT) has been reported on every continent except Antarctica, but detailed knowledge of its global prevalence remains limited. This metanalysis aims to estimate CTVT prevalence from published reports. Following the PRISMA guidelines, 380 studies were screened, and 39 studies reporting CTVT prevalence from 18 countries (1968-2025) were included. Regional and global estimates were calculated using random effects metanalysis. Thirty studies reported CTVT in population sample studies involving 7889861 dogs, with a pooled prevalence of 4% (95% CI: 0.03-0.05). S

This report addresses an atypical transmissible venereal tumour in an 8-year-old bitch that was pluriparous and seropositive for leishmaniasis. There were ascites and a serosanguineous discharge from the vulva, but no lesions on the external genital mucosa. An aspirate of the peritoneal fluid showed mononuclear round cells characteristic of transmissible venereal tumour (TVT). Exploratory laparotomy revealed light red, granulomatous structures in the peritoneum, omentum, spleen, liver and uterine horns. Cytological and histopathological tests confirmed the diagnosis of intra-abdominal TVT. Dis

From January 2000 to December 2023 the Laboratory of Animal Pathology of the Federal University of Campina Grande received 6,218 canine autopsy and biopsy submissions, with six (0.09%) autopsy cases diagnosed as transmissible venereal tumour (TVT) with encephalic metastases. The mean age of affected dogs (four females and two males) was 7 years. Dogs were all from urban areas and were either semidomiciled (four cases) or stray (two cases). Clinical findings consisted of multilobular, ulcerated masses affecting the genital area (five cases) or skin (one case). Neurological signs were reported i

Canine transmissible venereal tumour (TVT) is a clonally transmissible round cell neoplasm that most commonly affects the external genitalia. Extragenital and metastatic forms are uncommon and may represent a substantial diagnostic challenge, particularly when genital lesions are absent. We describe a young dog presenting with large unilateral pulmonary masses that clinically and histologically mimicked lymphoma. Histopathology revealed a malignant round cell neoplasm composed of sheets of poorly differentiated round cells. Immunohistochemical evaluation showed diffuse cytoplasmic immunolabell

A Dalmatian female presented with a history of vaginal bleeding and was diagnosed as having transmissible venereal tumour (TVT) after cytological examination of the vaginal growth revealed typical TVT cells. A cytology of the aspirate from multiple nodules in the skin near the abdominal and inguinal pair of mammary glands revealed similar cells suggestive of metastasis to skin of mammary region. Chemotherapy was initiated with weekly injections of vincristine sulphate (0.025 mg/kg BW, IV, SID) and haematological examination was performed pre- and post-treatment to assess the prognosis of the p

The treatment of canine transmissible venereal tumour (CTVT) has evolved since its initial description in 1810. Initially considered untreatable in the early 20th century, extensive research over time has significantly advanced our understanding of its aetiopathogenesis. This led to successful chemotherapy treatments, which have shown superior outcomes compared to surgical interventions. Vincristine, in particular, has proven effective in treating CTVT. However, the development of chemoresistance underscores the need to explore alternative therapeutic options. This systematic review provides a

Horizontal transfer of nuclear DNA between cells of host and cancer is a potential source of adaptive variation in cancer cells. An understanding of the frequency and significance of this process in naturally occurring tumors is, however, lacking. We screened for this phenomenon in the transmissible cancers of dogs and Tasmanian devils and found an instance in the canine transmissible venereal tumor (CTVT). This involved introduction of a 15-megabase dicentric genetic element, composed of 11 fragments of six chromosomes, to a CTVT sublineage occurring in Asia around 2,000 y ago. The element fo

An adult male dog with large penile sheath and serosanguineous exudate from the preputial orifice and a cutaneous fistula in the right inguinal area was examined. Necropsy revealed tumor masses on the penis and prepuce, in superficial inguinal and external iliac lymph nodes, and in the liver. Histopathologic diagnosis of the tumor was confirmed by transplantation studies.

A 5-year-old spayed female mixed-breed dog was referred to the Atlantic Veterinary College (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) because of a 7-month history of intermittent pink, mucoid, vulvar discharge. The dog was imported from the Bahamas at 3.5 y of age and had a history of transmissible venereal tumor (TVT) of the vulva that was successfully treated with a course of vincristine chemotherapy. Complete remission was achieved with a disease-free interval of 6 mo before clinical signs recurred. Abdominal ultrasound and CT scan identified a large caudal abdominal mass thought to arise from t

Round cell tumors are common cutaneous lesions in dogs, with increased occurrence percentages among different skin tumors. This study aimed to investigate the frequency as well as gross and pathological characteristics of round cell tumors in natural cases of tumorous dogs in relation to breed, sex, and age. Moreover, it aimed to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of a panel of immunohistochemical stains, including vimentin, E-cadherin, and cluster of differentiation (CD45) as an adjunct technique for the differential diagnosis of cutaneous round cell neoplasm. Data were collected fro

In 1981, during the worldwide canine parvovirus (PV) epizootic, canine transmissible venereal sarcomas growing in Beagles in a colony regressed earlier than expected after the dogs became infected with PV. Subsequent studies revealed that modified-live PV vaccine (feline panleukopenia virus) was capable of preventing tumor transplantation when the vaccine was inoculated simultaneously with the tumor in a site distant from the implantation site. However, the PV vaccine had no effect if it was inoculated 3 or 18 days after the tumor was transplanted.

BACKGROUND: 1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)2 D) is vital in the homeostasis of calcium and bone health as well as in the prevention of many disorders such as neoplasms. Epidemiological data show that low concentrations of both 1,25(OH)2 D and its precursor 25(OH) vitamin D (25(OH)D) are associated with an increased risk of a variety of human tumours.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate 25(OH)D, parathormone (PTH) and immunity marker concentrations in dogs with transmissible venereal tumour (TVT).
METHODS: 25(OH)D, PTH and various biochemical and immunity markers were evaluated in dogs with TVT (n =
