Venous thromboembolism (VTE) encompasses deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism. VTE is the leading cause of lost disability-adjusted life years and the third leading cause of cardiovascular death in the world. DVT leads to post-thrombotic syndrome, whereas pulmonary embolism can cause chronic pulmonary hypertension, both of which reduce quality of life. Genetic and acquired risk factors for thrombosis include non-O blood groups, factor V Leiden mutation, oral contraceptive use, hormone replacement therapy, advanced age, surgery, hospitalization and long-haul travel. Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) and Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) are rarely encountered thrombotic diseases of two different vascular systems. A 20-year-old woman in the 14th week of pregnancy was brought to the emergency department with complaints of sudden headache and loss of vision. Thrombosis in the left transverse and sigmoid sinus was demonstrated at MR angiography. She was diagnosed with BCS by using hepatic Doppler ultrasonography after an elevation of liver enzymes. Although CVT and BCS are rarely seen during pregnancy, they need emergency treatment because of high mortality.

Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is a rare yet serious cerebrovascular condition distinct from arterial stroke. Despite its low prevalence (0.5%-3% of strokes), incidence has risen due to improved awareness and diagnostics. CVT presents variably, commonly with headache, seizures, and focal deficits, making early recognition crucial. Diagnosis relies on CT/MR venography, while anticoagulation remains the mainstay of treatment. Prognosis is generally favorable, though long-term complications such as recurrent thrombosis and cognitive impairment are possible. Emerging research continues to refine

OBJECTIVE: This review explores the current literature on the natural history, diagnosis, and management of mesenteric venous thrombosis (MVT) in the modern era.
METHODS: A review of the contemporary literature from 1997 to 2016 on MVT and its pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment was performed.
RESULTS: MVT is an insidious and lethal disease associated with acute mesenteric ischemia. The prevalence of MVT has increased sharply during the past two decades commensurate with an increase in radiographic imaging for abdominal complaints. The optimal treatment of and approach to MVT is controver

Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) has an incidence of 1.32/100,000/years in high-income countries, and higher in middle- and low-income countries. CVT is more frequent in infants and children young adults and females, especially during pregnancy/puerperium. CVT are now being diagnosed with increasing frequency because of the increased awareness and higher use of magnetic resonance imaging (MR) for investigating patients with acute and subacute headaches and new onset seizures. CVT rarely present as a stroke syndrome. Their most frequent presentations are isolated headache, intracranial hyperten

Mesenteric vein thrombosis is increasingly recognized as a cause of mesenteric ischemia. Acute thrombosis commonly presents with abdominal pain and chronic type with features of portal hypertension. Contrast enhanced CT scan of abdomen is quite accurate for diagnosing and differentiating two types of mesenteric venous thrombosis. Prothrombotic state, hematological malignancy, and local abdominal inflammatory conditions are common predisposing conditions. Over the last decade, JAK-2 (janus kinase 2) mutation has emerged as an accurate biomarker for diagnosis of myeloproliferative neoplasm, an i

Because of its wide range of presentations, its highly variable mode of onset, its numerous causes, and its unpredictable outcome, cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) remains a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Treatment of CVT consists primarily of symptomatic treatment of seizures and intracranial hypertension, antithrombotics, and etiologic treatment whenever possible. Heparin remains the first line of treatment for CVT; although its systematic use remains debated, recent studies have confirmed its safety even in patients with large hemorrhagic infarctions. The addition of local thrombolys

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is a type of pathology which has many predisposing factors and forms of presentation, which make diagnosis and prognosis difficult. The objective of this paper is to review, and bring up to date, different aspects of knowledge concerning: aetiology, clinical features, diagnosis and treatment.
MAIN FINDINGS: The proportion of cases of unknown aetiology is between 20-35% in spite of new causes being described. Magnetic resonance and recently, angiographic resonance are the diagnostic methods of choice, although conventional angiography is still nec

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in hospitalized patients. For many years, stasis in the deep veins of the legs has been recognized as being a necessary but not a sufficient cause of thrombosis. The recent demonstration of the high prevalence of a mutation at Arg506 in the factor V gene ('factor V Leiden') in patients presenting with VTE has emphasized the protective role of activated protein C in neutralizing thrombin, and has highlighted the importance of genetic factors in the pathogenesis of venous thrombosis. For many if not most patients, the

Sixteen patients with mesenteric venous thrombosis were reviewed retrospectively during a period from 1983 to 1987. Twelve patients had progressive abdominal pain, three had gastrointestinal bleeding, and one had general malaise. Seven of these 16 patients had previous deep-vein thrombosis. After negative routine gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary evaluation, 11 patients underwent an infusion computerized tomographic scan. Of these, 10 had superior mesenteric vein thrombosis; three of these 10 patients had portal vein thrombosis. Selective arteriography was done in two patients because of gast

In neonates, thrombosis beginning in small renal veins and progressing to larger veins is best termed renal venous thrombosis (RVT) since the renal vein is not usually concerned. RVT occurs dominantly in the new-born and affects males more often than females (2:1). Hyperosmolality, maternal prediabetes and angiocardiography contribute to the occurrence or RVT. Early signs and symptoms are largely non-specific with the most reliable being the presence of haematuria (49%) or a palpably enlarged and hard kidney (60%). A falling platelet count, raised FDP level of falling plasminogen level support

Cerebral venous thrombosis is a condition that can lead to a cerebrovascular accident and is associated with thromboses in the cerebral sinuses. The clinical presentation is often similar to ischemic cerebral infarction and depends on the location of the thrombosis, but one of the most common symptoms is headache. Cerebral venous thrombosis in most cases is associated with risk factors for this condition, such as pregnancy, various types of coagulopathy, autoimmune diseases, infections, etc. The objective of this paper is to present a clinical case of a patient with thrombophilia who developed

Mesenteric vein thrombosis (MVT) is a rare condition that can present acutely, subacutely, or chronically. MVT can be isolated or within a splanchnic thrombosis (spleno-porto-mesenteric). Symptomatic cases usually present as nonspecific abdominal pain, with or without signs of intestinal ischemia, and the diagnosis is usually made by imaging test (abdominal CT or MRI) in patients with high clinical suspicion. An early clinical-surgical approach is recommended to screen those patients with warning signs and who benefit from an exploratory laparotomy in addition to anticoagulant treatment, which

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is the third most common cardiovascular disorder, affecting up to 5% of the population. VTE commonly manifests as lower-extremity deep venous thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism. Half of these events are associated with a transient risk factor and may be preventable with prophylaxis. Direct oral anticoagulants are effective and safe and carry a lower risk for bleeding than vitamin K antagonists. Many patients with VTE will have a chronic disease requiring long-term anticoagulation. Postthrombotic syndrome affects 25% to 40% of patients with DVT and significantly

The prevalence of mesenteric venous thrombosis has increased over the past 2 decades with the routine use of contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) in patients presenting with abdominal pain and those with portal hypertension. Concurrent with increasing recognition, routine and frequent use of anticoagulation has reduced the need for surgical intervention and improved outcome in these patients. Acute thrombosis often presents with abdominal pain, whereas chronic disease manifests either as an incidental finding on CT or with features of portal hypertension. Contrast-enhanced CT diagnoses a

First differentiated from arterial causes of acute mesenteric ischemia 75 years ago, acute mesenteric venous thrombosis (MVT) is an uncommon disorder with non-specific signs and symptoms, the diagnosis of which requires a high index of suspicion. The location, extent, and rapidity of thrombus formation determine whether intestinal infarction ensues. Etiologies, when identified, usually can be separated into local intra-abdominal factors and inherited or acquired hypercoagulable states. The diagnosis is most often made by contrast-enhanced computed tomography, though angiography and exploratory

Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) was formerly considered a rare disorder, associated with an unfavorable outcome. More recent data based on modern imaging techniques, however, have changed our perception of this disorder. The use of angiography and, especially, MRI have allowed an early diagnosis and have proved that the incidence of CVT is, in fact, higher than previously thought, approximately 3-4 cases per million people per year, and that the majority of patients have a favorable outcome. At present, the most frequent causes are oral contraceptives assumption and pregnancy/puerperium; as a
