Jugular venous valves and physical signs.

The presence of venous valves in the internal jugular and subclavian veins at the thoracic inlet has been well documented. Their presence helps explain several physical signs and hemodynamic findings. This lost page in the history of medicine should be returned to the book.

Prominent venous valves in hypoplastic right hearts.

To investigate the hypothesis that embryologic abnormalities in the venous valves may be associated with abnormal cardiac development, we examined the right atrial morphologic characteristics in 20 hearts with underdevelopment of the right heart and 17 normal hearts. In the study group, 16 (80%) of the patients had significantly enlarged eustachian valves, one (5%) was slightly enlarged, and three (15%) were smaller than expected. Five (25%) had cor triatriatum dexter. In comparison, eustachian valves in the control specimens were prominent in only one (6%), normal in five (29%), and almost ab

The role of venous valves in pressure shielding.

BACKGROUND: It is widely accepted that venous valves play an important role in reducing the pressure applied to the veins under dynamic load conditions, such as the act of standing up. This understanding is, however, qualitative and not quantitative. The purpose of this paper is to quantify the pressure shielding effect and its variation with a number of system parameters. METHODS: A one-dimensional mathematical model of a collapsible tube, with the facility to introduce valves at any position, was used. The model has been exercised to compute transient pressure and flow distributions along t

Percutaneous prosthetic venous valves: current state and possible applications.

The small-intestinal submucosa square-stent bicuspid venous valve has shown the most promising results of all of the artificial venous valves developed. In long-term experimental studies in sheep, 25 valves were placed into the jugular veins and 88% exhibited good function, whereas 12% had decreased function because of valve tilting. Only 4% had partial thrombosis in the tilted valve. Valves also were placed in 3 patients. The bicuspid venous valves remained patent without thrombosis or other complications. Proper sizing and proper placement of the valves was critical to their function. The va

Injury potential to venous valves from the Amplatz thrombectomy device.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the acute effects of the Amplatz thrombectomy device (ATD) on peripheral venous valves in a canine model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: ATD thrombectomy was performed in 17 veins, and control experiments with use of an 8-F sheath-dilator were performed in four veins. Prethrombectomy ascending venography was performed, followed by device passage across the vein segment. Post-thrombectomy ascending venography was then performed, followed by heparinization and euthanasia. The treated veins were carefully explanted and stored in formaldehyde for histopathologic examination. Severity

[Venous valves in the large branches of superior vena cava].

In 97 human cadavers the valves of the following blood vessels were investigated with regard to their cusps and their sizes and positions: the internal jugular veins, the subclavian veins, the brachiocephalic veins, and the superior vena cava. The cusps of each of the valves, which consist of two or three parts, are neither always of equal size nor obligatorily sufficient. Unipartite valves may be sufficient as well as insufficient. Internal jugular veins: The inferior bulb of the internal jugular vein is provided with valves which in 6% of the cases consist of three parts, in 66% of two parts

Venous valves of the head and neck: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Classical anatomical teaching has long described head and neck veins as largely valveless, allowing free bidirectional flow. Modern cadaveric, imaging, and surgical studies challenge this oversimplification. OBJECTIVE: This narrative review synthesises current anatomical evidence regarding the presence, morphology, distribution, and functional significance of venous valves throughout the head and neck venous system. METHODS: A literature search was conducted across PubMed and Semantic Scholar. The review was structured following the Scale for the Assessment of Narrative Review Ar

Internal jugular venous valves in children: high-resolution US findings.

The aim of this study was to determine in children the prevalence rate and to describe the sonographic morphology of the valves in the internal jugular veins. One hundred twenty children (60 boys and 60 girls; mean age +/- SD 10 +/- 4 years, age range 3-20 years) were recruited for the study. They underwent sonographic examination of both internal jugular veins. The number of valvular cusps, the length of the cusps and exact site of origin were recorded. In 96% of the children a valve was found in one or both internal jugular veins. Within this group a valve was detected unilaterally in 26% an

Effect of venous valves on grafts for coronary artery bypass.

The effect of venous valves on blood flow and patency in grafts of the long saphenous vein for coronary artery bypass is examined. Our experimental model involved both diastolic-predominant blood flow and transient systolic regurgitation, and the waveform was similar to that of in vivo coronary circulation. In this model, blood flow was assessed in the presence or absence of venous valves. It was found that coronary artery blood flow was significantly greater in the presence of venous valves. Angioendoscopy showed that the movement of the graft valves was strong and rhythmic. It seems that val

Hemodynamic effects of venous valves in aorto-coronary bypass grafts.

Use of the saphenous vein in aorto-coronary bypass surgery for treatment of occlusive coronary artery disease is a well-established technique. Use of the mammary artery for the same purpose has also been favorably reported. This study was undertaken to determine whether a vein graft containing a valve would have an added advantage. A comparison of the effect of competent and incompetent valves in vein grafts on the hemodynamics of coronary circulation was made. In a group of 18 dogs, a 5 cm. portion of each dog's cephalic vein containing a valve was used in a single aorto-coronary bypass graft

Advances in Engineering Venous Valves: The Pursuit of a Definite Solution for Chronic Venous Disease.

Native venous valves enable proper return of blood to the heart. Under pathological conditions (e.g., chronic venous insufficiency), venous valves malfunction and fail to prevent backward flow. Clinically, this can result in painful swelling, varicose veins, edema, and skin ulcerations leading to a chronic wound situation. Surgical correction of venous valves has proven to drastically reduce these symptoms. However, the absence of intact leaflets in many patients limits the applicability of this strategy. In this context, the development of venous valve replacements represents an appealing app

Status of the valves in the superficial and deep venous system in chronic venous disease.

The relationship between the functional status of the venous valves in the superficial and deep veins and ulceration was evaluated in 42 patients. Twenty-five patients had ulcers, 12 of these patients had a history of previous deep venous thrombosis and 13 of these patients denied such an event. Seventeen patients had normal ankle skin, 10 of these patients had a documented history of deep vein thrombosis and seven of these patients had varicose veins only. An ultrasonic duplex scanner was used to document the presence of reflux in all segments of the superficial and deep system. In the entire

Flow disturbance due to venous valves: a cause of graft failure.

Late (greater than 1 year) postoperative angiographic studies in five patients revealed evidence of flow disturbance at the distal valve, when two valves were present in the body of a saphenous vein graft (SVG). This was associated with delayed clearance of radiopaque dye due to reduced velocity of flow. On follow-up, occlusion, thrombus formation, or development of atherosclerosis seemed to have occurred in anatomic relation to these valves. All five patients had one additional graft in a good state of preservation; three internal mammary artery (IMA) grafts, and 2 SVGs. The latter had only o

Data regarding the typology and functional significance of the venous valves.

Many authors described in detail the morphological features of human venous valves, but less their functional architecture. The present study provides additional information concerning the valvular anatomy, to enable its functional interpretation. The previously reported data and the author's results showed the regional distribution and characteristics of venous valves in different areas of the human body. Certain findings suggested a reorganization after birth of the venous valves which are frequently met in fetus. The close relation between hemodynamic mechanisms and the blood guiding struct

Numerical simulation and experimental validation of thrombolytic therapy for patients with venous isomer and normal venous valves.

Thrombus is an extremely dangerous factor in the human body that can block the blood vessel. Once thrombosis happens in venous of lower limbs, local blood flow is impeded. This leads to venous thromboembolism (VTE) and even pulmonary embolism. In recent years, venous thromboembolism has frequently occurred in a variety of people, and there is no effective treatment for patients with different venous structures. For the patients with venous isomer with single valve structure, we establish a coupled computational model to simulate the process of thrombolysis with multi-dose treatment schemes by

In situ venous valve construction.

A technique of in situ deep venous valve construction based on vein wall intussusception is described. The technique has been used to construct a size-matched, autogenous valve in the femoral vein of the dog. Forty-one valves have been constructed. Immediately after construction, all 41 were patent at ascending phlebography and Harvey's test showed them to be competent. Descending phlebography demonstrated competence in 38 valves. Hydrostatic testing was performed on 27 valves in the vertical position at pressure gradients in the range 0.2-250 cmH2O. Of these, 24 valves were fully competent. S

Development of a prosthetic venous valve.

The pathology of thrombophlebitis primarily results from the obliteration of venous valves in the lower extremities. The objective of this study was to develop a prosthetic venous valve that could be implanted in the human femoral system to ameliorate the deleterious effects of thrombophlebitis. Prosthetic venous valves were produced from two materials: Pellethane valves were fabricated from a dip-casting process; umbilical vein valves were produced by a fixation process. The valves were evaluated as implants within the external jugular veins of 10 research dogs. Each animal was implanted with
