A verbal behavior analysis of auditory hallucinations.

A review of recent research on the non-medical control of auditory hallucinations is presented. It is suggested that the decreases in hallucinatory behavior obtained in studies using aversive contingencies may be attributable to the disruption of the chains of behavior involved. The results of several additional studies are interpreted as indicating that methods of stimulus control and the use of incompatible behaviors may be effective in reducing the rate of auditory hallucinations. Research relating auditory hallucinations to subvocalizations is presented in support of the view that hallucin

Effects of antidepressive program on verbal behavior.

At time of admission 50 hospitalized male patients assigned to one of two groups judged as depressed and nondepressed completed one form of the Depression Adjective Check List (DACL). Depressed patients were placed in a highly specific treatment regime: Antidepressive program (adp), which required display of assertive behavior for termination of treatment. After removal from the program ADP patients received an alternate form of the DACL, and 2 weeks postadmission all patients completed a third form of testing. Significant decrease in number of dysphoric mood items selected posttreatment was f

Alcohol, affect, and the disinhibition of verbal behavior.

A study was conducted to investigate the effects of acute alcohol administration on affective states and verbal behavior during the ascending and descending limbs of the blood alcohol curve. Sixteen male social drinkers were given alcohol (1.0 g/kg) or placebo in a double-blind crossover research design. Subjects tested while blood alcohol levels (BAL) were ascending close to peak concentration (0.11 g%) described themselves as more elated, friendly, and vigorous than when tested under placebo conditions. As BAL declined, subjects described themselves as more angry, depressed, and fatigued. Co

Enhancing social communication behaviors in children with autism: the impact of dog training intervention on verbal and non-verbal behaviors.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated the impact of dog training intervention (DTI) on verbal, non-verbal, and maladaptive behaviors in autistic preschoolers. Previous research has demonstrated the benefits of animal-assisted interventions, but this study specifically focused on changes during the DTI. METHODS: We analyzed video recordings of 37 autistic children (mean age 4:7 years, SD = 1:1) from special education preschools, comparing their behaviors during the initial and final intervention sessions. The intervention, consisting of 17 structured stages, progressively introduced the childr

Agnosic behavior in anomia: a case of pathological verbal dominance.

The interrelation of perceptual and verbral process was explored in a fluent aphasic with a naming disorder. This patient performed extremely well on complex perceptual tasks as long as he was instructed to remain silent or to count aloud. Whe he began to talk about what he was doing, he misnamed many test items and behaved as if they were what he had called them. The verbal interference effect is explained in terms of cerebral dominance and interhemispheric interaction and it is suggested that a similar mechanism may apply in classical cases of agnosia.

Behavioral covariation in the treatment of delusional verbalization with contingency management.

A 23-year-old female with the dual diagnosis of mild mental retardation and emotional disturbance was referred for treatment because of frequent disruptive outbursts. A brief inpatient behavior analysis suggested that delusional verbalization reliably preceded all other aberrant behaviors. Consequently treatment focused mainly on delusional verbalization; the additional aberrant behaviors were observed for behavioral covariation. The treatment package consisted of verbal instructions, modeling of appropriate eating behaviors, contingent verbal reprimand and a 2-min removal of food, and differe

Behavioral evidence of spontaneous decay in verbal working memory.

Understanding the forgetting mechanisms in working memory is a considerable challenge for cognitive psychologists. Traditional views attribute forgetting in working memory to interference and decay, but whether verbal working memory undergoes spontaneous decay is still debated. In the present study, we examined this issue by asking participants to simultaneously memorize visual and verbal items, but requiring them to prioritize the visual materials. If spontaneous decay occurs in verbal working memory, and if the potential antiforgetting mechanisms (e.g., attentional refreshing) are primarily

Modeling Verbal Behavior Deficits with the Stimulus Control Ratio Equation, SCoRE.

Verbal operant analyses are the extension of functional analysis technology to the field of verbal behavior, of particular relevance to autism spectrum disorders and associated developmental disabilities. Similarly, a verbal operant analysis carefully controls specific environmental factors that influence language, and measures strength of responding across four verbal operant classes: tact, mand, echoic, and sequelic. The frequency of each independent verbal operant is then measured against one another using the stimulus control ratio equation (SCoRE) to summarize the relative strength of the

Constructive anger verbal behavior predicts blood pressure in a population-based sample.

The creation of an observational Constructive Anger Behavior-Verbal Style Scale (CAB-V) and its relation to resting blood pressure (BP) in an age- and sex-stratified, population-based sample is examined. Participants (N = 1,862) provided hypertension risk factor information, had resting BP assessed multiple times, and completed a videotaped interview, which was later coded for CAB-V and Hostile Style. High CAB-V scores remained a significant predictor of lower resting BP when controlling for the effects of standard hypertension risk factors (age, sex, body mass index, physical activity, alcoho

Type A behavior and cardiovascular responses during verbalization in cardiac patients.

While the physiological mechanisms linking Type A behavior pattern (TABP) to increased coronary heart disease (CHD) risk are unknown, extreme cardiovascular reactivity to daily activities and stressors has been proposed as a mechanism for promoting the progression of atherosclerosis and CHD. Verbalization, either talking or reading aloud, is known to cause significant increases in the blood pressure and heart rates of individuals, including cardiac patients. Blood pressure and heart rate responses of 111 Type A and Type B cardiac patients during verbalization were examined in this study. Blood

Further evaluation of emerging speech in children with developmental disabilities: training verbal behavior.

The conceptual basis for many effective language-training programs are based on Skinner's (1957) analysis of verbal behavior. Skinner described several elementary verbal operants including mands, tacts, intraverbals, and echoics. According to Skinner, responses that are the same topography may actually be functionally independent. Previous research has supported Skinner's assertion of functional independence (e.g., Hall & Sundberg, 1987; Lamarre & Holland, 1985), and some research has suggested that specific programming must be incorporated to achieve generalization across verbal operants (e.g

Behavioral predictors of improved speech output in minimally verbal children with autism.

We investigated the relationship between eight theoretically motivated behavioral variables and a spoken-language-related outcome measure, after 25 sessions of treatment for speech production in 38 minimally verbal children with autism. After removing potential predictors that were uncorrelated with the outcome variable, two remained. We used both complete-case and multiple-imputation analyses to address missing predictor data and performed linear regressions to identify significant predictors of change in percent syllables approximately correct after treatment. Increasing Verbal Behavior in a Young Adolescent Girl with Catatonia and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Catatonia is a syndrome characterized as a cluster of difficulties in verbal and motor behavior that interferes with everyday function. This study analyzed the effects of a prompt-fading behavioral treatment package on the verbal behavior of an adolescent girl with autism and catatonia. Data were collected on three verbal responses previously observed in the participant's repertoire, including "Hi," "That sounds great," and "Excuse me." Instructors provided full manual guidance, in conjunction with a verbal model, when needed, to assist the participant in emitting the verbal responses. A funct

Development of hand-eye dominance in relation to verbal self-regulation of motor behavior.

The development of the relation between hand-eye dominance and verbal self-control of motor behavior was examined with 4- and 5-year-olds. Performances of subjects falling into either crossed or consistent hand-eye dominance categories were compared on a two-choice button-pushing task. Children performed this with their dominant hand in one of two conditions: verbalizing and not verbalizing their button-pushing activity. Results showed that crossed hand-eye dominant children gave significantly poorer performances than consistent hand-eye dominant children and that the former used their self-in

[The connection between videoanalytic regular measurements of non-verbal behavior and self-assessed mood].

13 manic-depressive patients were examined during a symptom-free interval while under treatment with lithium, and again after a 6-week placebo period. The results are based on a behavioral analysis of video-taped interviews as well as a self-rating of mood with a multidimensional questionnaire (Hecheltjen & Mertesdorf, MSF). This questionnaire was presented on the day of the interviews. The following parameters were examined: 1. Duration of speech activity, 2. Frequency of hand movements accompanying speech, 3. Frequency of discrete body touchings. In order to clarify the interdependency of th

Reciprocity in Undesirable Parent-Child Behavior? Verbal Aggression, Corporal Punishment, and Girls' Oppositional Defiant Symptoms.

Parental verbal aggression and corporal punishment are associated with children's conduct problems and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). The strength of bidirectional relationships among specific disruptive behaviors has been inconsistent across gender, and the direction of influence between parental aggression and girls' ODD symptoms is particularly understudied. This study tested reciprocal effects between aggressive parent behaviors and girls' ODD dimensions of oppositionality, antagonism, and irritability. Data from the Pittsburgh Girls Study (N = 2,450) were used, including annual chil

Prediction of relapse of schizophrenic patients: Camberwell Family Interview versus content analysis of verbal behavior.

In a replication of the study by Gottschalk et al. (1988), expressed emotion scores derived from the Camberwell Family Interview were compared with Anxiety and Overt Hostility Outward scores from a content analysis of verbal behavior based on a 10-minute speech sample from parents of 49 German schizophrenic inpatients. The scores from the two methods were significantly correlated, but only expressed emotion scores predicted relapse during a 12-month followup. Scores from the Gottschalk-Gleser content analysis did not exceed chance level in prediction of relapse.

Therapist verbal behavior early in treatment: relation to successful completion of parent-child interaction therapy.

We examined the role of specific therapist verbal behaviors in predicting successful completion of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) in 22 families, including 11 families that successfully completed treatment and 11 that discontinued treatment prematurely. The children were 3 to 6 years old and diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Chamberlain et al.'s (1986) Therapy Process Code (TPC) was used to measure therapist verbalizations during therapist-parent interactions during the initial clinical interview and the second treatment session. Results indicated that therapists' us
