[Non-verbal learning disabilities].

In 1975, Myklebust proposed a special form of learning disabilities characterizes by impairment of spatial cognition, social interaction and conceptualization, and named it as non-verbal learning disabilities (NLD). Since the brain locus for spatial cognition was thought to be localized in the right hemisphere, NLD was regarded as a disorder of the right hemispheric function. The clinical characteristics of NLD are almost identical to those of Asperger syndrome (AS), which was introduced in English literature in 1981. Since Asperger syndrome is regarded as one of the autistic spectrum disorder

Adult outcomes of verbal learning disability.

Although it is currently generally accepted that, in most cases, verbal learning disability (VLD) can persist into adulthood, adult outcomes of learning disability are still under much discussion. The adult outcomes of two types of VLD (dyslexia and dysgraphia) will be the focus of this article. The defining characteristics of VLD and what constitutes these types of VLD are provided in detail elsewhere in this issue (see Jones and Eberling). This article will focus on the current epidemiology, possible causative factors, neurocognitive profiles, and neurological correlates of such disability.

[The characteristics of non-verbal learning disorder].

INTRODUCTION: Non verbal learning disorder (NLD) appears to be the consequence of an alteration in the cognitive functions linked to the right hemisphere. It is characterised by the coexistence of difficulties in carrying out social skills, poor academic achievement, low visuospatial skills and motor clumsiness. DEVELOPMENT: In this paper, information from the medical literature and the authors' own experience are taken as the basis to describe the most relevant clinical manifestations and the cognitive behavioural profile presented by children with NLD. Bearing in mind the similarity between

Verbal learning and memory in children with myelomeningocele.

Examined verbal learning and memory in children with myelomeningocele using the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT). Participants included 41 children with myelomeningocele, 8 to 15 years of age, 33 of whom had a history of shunted hydrocephalus, and 41 matched, unaffected controls. Children with myelomeningocele and shunted hydrocephalus performed worse than controls on the CVLT. They recalled as many words as controls on the first learning trial, but acquired words more slowly across trials, so that their overall recall was lower. Their learning was characterized by a pronounced recency e

Verbalization in EMR children's observational learning.

The effect of descriptive verbalization during observation of a model on mentally retarded boys' retention for what they had observed was examined. Forty 9- to 12-year-old boys in public-school EMR classes were grouped on the basis of relatively high or low IQ scores. One-half of each group observed a videotaped model perform a series of novel acts, while in addition to viewing the tape, the other half described the model's actions. Observational learning was immediately tested through a set of prompts for imitation, with prizes offered commensurate with level of performance. Regardless of IQ

Effect of prefrontal and parietal tDCS on learning and recognition of verbal and non-verbal material.

OBJECTIVE: Information learned in a spaced way is usually better recognized than information learned in a massed way. The brain mechanisms underlying this spacing effect remain unclear. METHODS: We applied anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to the left and right prefrontal (PFC) or posterior parietal (PPC) cortices to study how stimulation influences learning and retrieval of information, as evidenced by item recognition and the spacing effect, and whether the effects are lateralized according to stimulus material and site of stimulation. We devised a continuous recognition

Auditory verbal learning test can lateralize hippocampal sclerosis.

The ability of the Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT) to lateralize hippocampal sclerosis (HS) in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) was explored in a sample of 50 patients with MTLE-HS (23 right and 27 left). Patients' AVLT scores were adjusted to the demographic characteristics of each individual in accordance with the Portuguese normative data. The laterality of the HS was determined by consensus by two neuroradiologists. ROC curves were used to identify the best AVLT cutoff scores to differentiate right vs. left HS. Diagnostic statistics were applied to different AVLT measures. The stu

Emotional Verbal Learning Test: development and psychometric properties.

Memory deficits are a common feature of neurological and psychiatric disorders. Measures designed to evaluate memory in clinical populations have distinguished between memory for verbal and visual information; however, few tests assess the recall and recognition of emotional information, despite evidence suggesting that brain regions are differentially involved in memory for emotional and neutral stimuli and that affective disturbances are common in psychiatric and neurological disorders. The present study reports the test development and psychometric properties of the Emotional Verbal Learnin

Telomere length and verbal learning in bipolar disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies indicate accelerated ageing processes, shorter telomere length and poorer cognitive functioning in patients with bipolar disorder. The neurobiology underlying cognitive function in bipolar disorder is yet to be established. We anticipated that accelerated ageing as indicated by shortened telomere length, would be associated with reduced cognitive performance in bipolar disorder, particularly for ageing sensitive functions such as memory and learning. METHODS: The study consisted of 647 participants (bipolar disorder [n = 246] and healthy controls [n = 401]). All p

Verbal threat learning does not spare loved ones.

Significant others provide individuals with a sense of safety and security. However, the mechanisms that underlie attachment-induced safety are hardly understood. Recent research has shown beneficial effects when viewing pictures of the romantic partner, leading to reduced pain experience and defensive responding. Building upon this, we examined the inhibitory capacity of loved face pictures on fear learning in an instructed threat paradigm. Pictures of loved familiar or unknown individuals served as signals for either threat of electric shocks or safety, while a broad set of psychophysiologic

Verbal learning and memory in schizotypal personality disorder.

The investigation of cognitive deficits in patients with schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) is important both to establish commonalities between SPD and schizophrenia and to clarify the significance of these cognitive deficits for schizophrenic disorders. The purpose of this study was to examine verbal learning and memory with the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) in a group of patients with SPD (n=24) and a group of patients with personality disorders other than SPD (OPD; n=25). The results indicated that SPD patients learned significantly fewer words with practice on the CVLT than O

Verbal learning and memory in agenesis of the corpus callosum.

The role of interhemispheric interactions in the encoding, retention, and retrieval of verbal memory can be clarified by assessing individuals with complete or partial agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC), but who have normal intelligence. This study assessed verbal learning and memory in AgCC using the California Verbal Learning Test-Second Edition (CVLT-II). Twenty-six individuals with AgCC were compared to 24 matched controls on CVLT-II measures, as well as Donders׳ four CVLT-II factors (i.e., Attention Span, Learning Efficiency, Delayed Memory, and Inaccurate Memory). Individuals with Ag

From Learning to Memory: A Comparison Between Verbal and Non-verbal Skills in 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome.

Background: Previous studies on possible memory deficits in 22q11DS often focused on quantifying the information memorized, whereas learning processes have been mostly overlooked. Furthermore, methodological differences in task design have made verbal and non-verbal comparison challenging and mixed results have been observed depending on chosen stimuli. Method: 135 participants (78 with 22q11DS) completed a multi-trial memory task modeled after the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Task, comparing verbal and non-verbal learning as well as retention over time. Performance in the 22q11DS group were c

Identification of Subtle Verbal Memory Deficits in Premanifest Huntington Disease Using the California Verbal Learning Test.

BACKGROUND: Verbal memory impairment in individuals with Huntington disease (HD) is well-documented; however, the nature and extent of verbal memory impairment in individuals with premanifest HD (pre-HD) are less understood. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate verbal memory function in individuals with pre-HD by comparing their performance on the California Verbal Learning Test to that of individuals with a clinical diagnosis of HD and that of a demographically similar group of adults with no family history of, or genetic risk for, HD, thereby reducing possible complications of psychiatric difficulties co

Verbal manipulations of learning expectancy do not enhance reconsolidation.

OBJECTIVES: Pharmacological studies using propranolol suggest that if reactivation signals that new information will be learned (i.e., there is an expectation for learning) reconsolidation can be enhanced. We examined if the verbal instructions to expect new learning will enhance reconsolidation of fear memories using the post-retrieval extinction paradigm. METHODS: On day one, participants (n = 48) underwent differential fear conditioning to two images (CS+ and CS-). On day two, participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups; groups one and two had their memory for the CS+ reacti

Verbal learning deficits in posttraumatic stress disorder and depression.

Verbal learning and memory deficits are frequently reported in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but may be a product of its psychiatric comorbidities, especially major depressive disorder (MDD). To evaluate this hypothesis, 25 medication-free patients with PTSD and comorbid MDD were compared to 148 medication-free patients with equally severe MDD alone and to 96 nonpatients on a measure of verbal learning and memory. Additional measures of attention, working memory, and executive function were administered to evaluate their contribution to verbal memory impairment. Patients with comorbid

Verbal analogical reasoning in children with language-learning disabilities.

This study was designed to explore the influences of both cognitive and linguistic abilities on verbal analogy completion. School-age children classified as language-learning disabled were administered five types of verbal analogies: synonyms, antonyms, linear order, category membership, and functional relationship. The performance of the children with language-learning disabilities was compared with one group of normally developing children matched for mental age and another group matched for language age. Results indicated that the group matched for mental age performed better than the other

Assessment of verbal memory in Parkinson's disease utilizing a virtual reality-based Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test.

The Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) is a commonly used tool for evaluating verbal learning and memory in neuropsychological assessments. In recent years, we developed a Virtual Reality (VR) adaptation of the RAVLT (VR-RVLT), aiming for increased ecological validity compared to the traditional pen and paper gold standard (GS-RAVLT). Following validation in healthy cohorts, the VR-RAVLT was validated with thirty individuals with Parkinson's Disease (PD) that completed both the GS-RAVLT and the VR- RAVLT. Validity of the VR-RAVLT was evaluated by assessing its construct and discriminant
