This study investigates the phytochemical composition and pharmacological potential of Verbascum thapsus L. leaf extracts. Cold maceration with solvents of increasing polarity (hexane, ethyl acetate, ethanol, and methanol) yielded extracts rich in phenolics, flavonoids, and tannins, as confirmed by phytochemical screening and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) detection of aldehydes, ketones, and aliphatic and aromatic groups. LC-MS analysis further identified key bioactive constituents, including daidzein, ellagic acid, sinapinic acid, and scutellarin. Among the tested extracts, polar solvents

The chloroplast genomes of Verbascum speciosum and V. sinuatum reveal lineage-specific structural variations and hypervariable loci (ycf3_1-trnS-GGA, rps15, matK) that serve as powerful markers for species identification. Signatures of positive selection in ndhB, ycf3, and ycf4 suggest adaptive evolution in plastid genes, while phylogenomic analyses confirm that plastome-scale data are essential for resolving species-level relationships in this medicinally valuable genus. The genus Verbascum (Scrophulariaceae) is both species-rich and notoriously difficult to classify, with many members valued

Chitosan, a biodegradable and biocompatible biopolymer, is widely favored in film production as an eco-friendly alternative to petroleum-based films. However, its limited water resistance restricts its applications. To address this issue, the water resistance of chitosan films was enhanced by coating their surfaces with hair derived from the leaves of the Verbascum sp. plant, a species that is abundant and easy to cultivate. Natural superhydrophobic films were successfully produced by embedding needle-like hairs onto the surfaces of chitosan matrices. The resulting films were characterized usi

Exotic plant species can evolve adaptations to environmental conditions in the exotic range. Furthermore, soil biota can foster exotic spread in the absence of negative soil pathogen-plant interactions or because of increased positive soil biota-plant feedbacks in the exotic range. Little is known, however, about the evolutionary dimension of plant-soil biota interactions when comparing native and introduced ranges. To assess the role of soil microbes for rapid evolution in plant invasion, we subjected Verbascum thapsus, a species native to Europe, to a reciprocal transplant experiment with soi

The steno-endemic Verbascum rupicola faces a precarious future due to its extreme habitat specialization on tectonically active hydrothermal quartz veins. This study presents a long-term assessment based on periodic population censuses spanning 18 years (2007, 2016, and 2025) to assess the demographic and spatial trends of its global population in the Tahtalı Dam basin, Türkiye. Field surveys, GIS-based habitat mapping, and controlled pollination experiments were integrated with seed germination kinetics and ex situ cultivation trials. Results reveal a precipitous 69.12% global population decl
