To be adaptively useful, internal circadian clocks must be entrained (synchronized) to daily rhythms in the external world. The entraining process adjusts the period of the internal clock to 24 hours and its phase to a value that determines the organism's temporal niche (e.g., diurnal and nocturnal). For most vertebrates, the dominant environmental synchronizer is light. All vertebrates employ specialized photoreceptor cells to perceive synchronizing light signals, but mammals and nonmammalian vertebrates do this differently. Mammals concentrate circadian photoreceptors in the retina, employin

The role of circulating serotonin is unclear and whether or not serotonin is present in the blood of non-mammalian species is not known. This study provides the first evidence for the presence of serotonin in thrombocytes of birds and three reptilian species, the endothermic leatherback sea turtle, the green sea turtle and the partially endothermic American alligator. Thrombocytes from a fresh water turtle, American bullfrog, Yellowfin tuna, and Chinook salmon did not contain serotonin. Serotonin is a vasoactive substance that regulates skin blood flow, a major mechanism for endothermic body t

A phylogenetic survey of brain myelin ganglioside patterns and concentrations has been carried out on 16 vertebrate species. Gangliosides were isolated from purified myelin and found to vary in concentration from 25 micrograms of sialic acid per 100 mg of myelin for goldfish to a value of 395 for turkey. The latter species had approximately equivalent amounts of GM1 and GM4 as the two major gangliosides. The 11 mammals studied all had GM1 as the major ganglioside, with variable amounts of GM4; rhesus monkey and human had 20-25% GM4, whereas the others had less than 10%. Amphibia and fish myeli

Thermoregulatory mechanisms and control of homeothermy are quite recent from evolutionary stand point. Animals have either simply recruited or modified other regulatory systems for the purpose of thermoregulation. The degree of such recruitments or modifications vary among different class of vertebrates thus giving rise to a relative diversity in the spectrum of thermoregulatory control and mechanisms. The review briefly summarizes the evidence showing that body temperature control is not an isolated regulated system in vertebrates, rather, a hierarchically integrated multiple system. The avai

The identification and isolation of circadian pacemaker cells is of critical importance to studies of circadian clocks at all phylogenetic levels. In the vertebrate classes, a few structures of diencephalic origin have been implicated as potential sites but for only two, the avian pineal and the mammalian suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), has a pacemaker role in addition to oscillatory behaviour been demonstrated by the transfer of pacemaker properties from one organism to another. Studies of the mammalian system in particular have benefited from the ability to restore circadian function using tr

The methods used to obtain psychophysical data on the nasal chemosensory systems of all classes of vertebrates are critically reviewed and a summary of the available data on their odor detection and discrimination abilities is provided. Although there are reliable methods for training at least one member of each class to respond differentially to the presence or absence of odor stimuli, very little is known about the limits of the capacity of any of the three major nasal chemosensory systems (olfactory, vomeronasal and trigeminal) to detect pure compounds. Furthermore, studies in which rigorou

Sex and mitochondria are inextricably linked in the eukaryotic tree of life, a confounding situation given the uniparental inheritance of mitochondria and the biparental inheritance that sexual reproduction entails. Unisexual vertebrate lineages, which arise via hybridization and asexually pass on their genetic material to clonal descendants, provide a unique opportunity to study mitochondrial evolution without potentially confounding effects of sex. Hybridity and clonality set unisexual vertebrates apart from other vertebrates and establish a distinct genetic environment that shapes their evo

Environmental compounds can interfere with endocrine systems of wildlife and humans. The main sink of such substances, called endocrine disrupters (ED), are surface waters. Thus, aquatic vertebrates, such as fish and amphibians, are most endangered. ED can adversely affect reproductive biology and the thyroid system. ED act by (anti)estrogenic and (anti)androgenic modes of action, resulting in abnormal sexual differentiation and impaired reproduction. These effects are mainly driven by direct interferences of ED with sex steroid receptors rather than indirectly by impacting synthesis and bioav

A mechanism for the generation of the morphological left-right asymmetry in higher organisms is proposed, based on the idea that chirality at the molecular level is the primordial source for macroscopic asymmetry. This mechanism accounts for a variety of experimental results on artificial production of situs inversus and fits well with mutations in mice causing visceral transposition.

The specification of the body axis in the embryo is reflected in the structure of the vertebral column. Expression patterns of Hox genes in the prevertebrae suggest their involvement in this specification process and in the maintenance of vertebral identities. A single, ectopically expressed Hox gene can reprogramme the rostral part of the vertebral column and induce phenotypic alterations interpretable as homeotic transformations.

The title of this paper commemorating the contributions made by Professor Urist has an interesting bearing upon basic skeletal tissue biology. This is because the calcium-binding proteins (vitellogenins), upon which Professor Urist and Schjeide have focused much of their attention in non-mammalian vertebrates, although produced by the liver and present in the blood plasmas of non-mammalian vertebrates during vitellogenesis, are, in effect, substitutes for the protein casein present in the milk of mammalian vertebrates. Vitellogenins (180,000-250,000 daltons) appear to be produced solely for de

Avian and mammalian kidneys can produce a urine hyperosmotic to the blood by means of a renal countercurrent system. Birds are uricotelic; mammals are ureotelic. It is proposed that the inner medulla present in mammalian, but not in avian kidneys serves specifically to accumulate urea in the inner and outer medulla. Among mammalian kidneys the degree to which urea accumulates in the inner medulla is inversely related to the complexity of the vascular bundles (in the outer medulla) and the cortical urea recycling index. A model is proposed for urea recycling via the vascular bundles. The renal

Studies from multiple laboratories with a range of methods raised the possibility that insulin production occurs naturally at extrapancreatic sites. Part A covers the presence of insulin-related materials in organisms that do not have an endocrine pancreas, including unicellular prokaryotes and eukaryotes as well as multicellular non-vertebrate animals (insects et al.) and plants. Part B covers possible production of insulin by extrapancreatic tissues of vertebrates that are remote from a source of pancreatic insulin e.g. early chick embryos and mammalian cells in culture. Part C covers possib

Pesticides are widely used in agricultural systems globally, and wild vertebrates are commonly exposed to them in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. This review synthesizes current knowledge on pesticide classes, environmental fate, exposure pathways, and their effects across major nonhuman vertebrate taxa. We highlight both direct toxic effects, including neurotoxicity, endocrine disruption, and oxidative stress, and indirect exposure mediated through food web alterations. Aquatic vertebrates, particularly fish and amphibians, emerge as highly vulnerable due to continuous exposure of se

The pituitary is a master endocrine gland that developed early in vertebrate evolution and therefore exists in all modern vertebrate classes. The last decade has transformed our view of this key organ. Traditionally, the pituitary has been viewed as a randomly organized collection of cells that respond to hypothalamic stimuli by secreting their content. However, recent studies have established that pituitary cells are organized in tightly wired large-scale networks that communicate with each other in both homo and heterotypic manners, allowing the gland to quickly adapt to changing physiologic

Melatonin receptors are members of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family. Three genes for melatonin receptors have been cloned. The MT1 (or Mel1a or MTNR1A) and MT2 (or Mel1b or MTNR1B) receptor subtypes are present in humans and other mammals, while an additional melatonin receptor subtype, Mel1c (or MTNR1C), has been identified in fish, amphibians and birds. Another melatonin related orphan receptor, GPR50, which does not bind melatonin, is found exclusively in mammals. The hormone melatonin is secreted primarily by the pineal gland, with highest levels occurring during the dark perio

Because they were the largest of all viruses and could be visualised with a light microscope, the poxviruses were the first viruses to be intensively studied in the laboratory. It was clear from an early date that they caused important diseases of humans and their domestic animals, such as smallpox, cowpox, camelpox, sheeppox, fowlpox and goatpox. This essay recounts some of the early history of their recognition and classification and then expands on aspects of research on poxviruses in which the author has been involved. Studies on the best-known genus, Orthopoxvirus, relate to the use of in
