[Verteporfin and photosensitivity in diabetic].

PURPOSE/METHOD: A 33-year-old woman with a myopic neovascular lesion was treated with photodynamic therapy (PDT) with verteporfin. She had a borde-line diabetes mellitus that finally needed treatment with a sulfonylurea. She underwent a second treatment with PDT that was uneventful, but 10 hours later she experienced severe skin photosensitivity reaction. RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS: As the use of verteporfin becomes more widespread around the world, physicians must be alert to the possibility of adverse side effects associated with its use and its interaction with other drugs.

Photodynamic Therapy with Verteporfin for Corneal Neovascularisation.

Corneal neovascularization can be a difficult problem to treat. The authors describe a patient with lipid keratopathy secondary to corneal neovascularization treated with photodynamic therapy. Six months following treatment the neovascularization has not returned and the lipid keratopathy has not increased in size. No significant side effects from the treatment occurred. Photodynamic therapy with Verteporfin was a useful treatment modality in this case of corneal neovascularization with associated lipid keratopathy.

In vitro and in vivo activities of verteporfin-loaded nanoparticles.

The main goal of this study was to develop a dispersed polymeric drug delivery system for verteporfin, suitable for intravenous administration and capable of improving its phototherapeutic index and minimizing the side effects. To achieve this objective, two types of verteporfin-loaded nanoparticles (167 and 370 nm in diameter) based on poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) were prepared using the salting-out technique and were first tested on EMT-6 mammary tumor cells in comparison with an aqueous solution (DMSO/PBS). It was observed that small nanoparticles exhibited greater photocytotoxicity compa

Microfluidic loading of verteporfin into extracellular vesicles for neuroblastoma therapy.

Despite contributing to cancer progression, extracellular vesicles (EVs) could serve as potential drug delivery systems in cancer treatment, having the ability to dissolve water-insoluble drugs and facilitate targeted delivery. However, the clinical translation of EVs is still in its infancy. While traditional methods for EV modifications will remain relevant, microfluidic approaches are expected to replace benchtop methods. Taking advantage of lab-on-chip devices, passive cargo loading through microfluidic mixing and incubation may be an important strategy to produce functional engineered EVs

Verteporfin-Loaded Bioadhesive Nanoparticles for the Prevention of Hypertrophic Scar.

Hypertrophic scarring (HS) is a common skin injury complication with unmet needs. Verteporfin (VP) should be an ideal HS-targeted therapeutic drug due to its efficient fibrosis and angiogenesis inhibitory abilities. However, its application is restricted by its side effects such as dose-dependent cytotoxicity on normal cells. Herein, the bioadhesive nanoparticles encapsulated VP (VP/BNPs) are successfully developed to attenuate the side effects of VP and enhance its HS inhibition effects by limiting VP releasing slowly and stably in the lesion site but not diffusing easily to normal tissues. V
