Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (VEMP) are commonly recorded in patients experiencing vertigo or chronic instability. This test evaluates the patient's otolith function and is often combined with both Videonystagmography and Video Head Impulse Test. VEMP is a simple, reproducible test, in the absence of any pre-existing conductive hearing loss. Cervical VEMP explore both saccular function and the inferior vestibular nerve, whereas ocular VEMP assess utricular function and the superior vestibular nerve. In combination with previously described tests, VEMP allows characterization of vertig

The recording of vestibular evoked myogenic potentials is a relatively new neuro-otologic method which gives specific information about the function of the sacculus and the inferior vestibular nerve on each side separately. The main indications for this method are vestibular schwannoma and fistula of the labyrinth, involvement of the sacculus or the inferior vestibular nerve in Menière's disease and vestibular neuritis, vertigo of unknown etiology, and forensic questions.

Sound-induced vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) can be used to investigate saccular function, measured from the tonically contracted sternocleidomastoid muscles (SCM) in response to loud sound stimuli. The aim of the present study was to assess VEMPs in patients with vestibular migraine and to determine whether saccular function is affected by the disease. Furthermore, tests such as tilts of subjective visual vertical (SVV) and caloric testing were conducted to test whether deficits in the various tests are associated with each other. The amplitude and latency of VEMPs were measure

UNLABELLED: The vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) test is a relatively new diagnostic tool that is in the process of being investigated in patients with specific vestibular disorders. Briefly, the VEMP is a biphasic response elicited by loud clicks or tone bursts recorded from the tonically contracted sternocleidomastoid muscle, being the only resource available to assess the function of the saccule and the lower portion of the vestibular nerve.
AIM: In this review, we shall highlight the history, methods, current VEMP status, and discuss its specific application in the diagnosis of

Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) are short-latency electromyograms evoked by high-level acoustic stimuli recorded from surface electrodes over the tonically contracted sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle. These responses are presumed to originate in the saccule. The purpose of this preliminary report is to provide an overview of our initial experience with the VEMP by describing the responses obtained in five subjects. Click-evoked VEMPs were present at short latencies in two normal-hearing subjects, one patient with profound congenital sensorineural hearing loss, and one patient wit

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) has been thought to originate from sacculus. The variance of this potential and the effectiveness of the adjustments of pInII amplitudes using average muscle tonus of ipsilateral sternocleidomastoid muscle were evaluated. In addition, clinical application of VEMP was examined in patients with acoustic tumors (ATs) and vestibular neurolabyrinthitis (VNL).
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective evaluation of the VEMP in 18 normal volunteers and 6 patients.
METHODS: Variance and left-right difference of each parameter, including pI latency,

Vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) are short latency manifestations of vestibulo-ocular and vestibulocollic reflexes that originate from the utricle and saccule. Although cervical and ocular VEMPs have mostly been applied to peripheral vestibular disorders, the characteristics and the diagnostic values of VEMPs have been expanded to assess the function of the central otolithic pathways. In the central nervous system, the cervical VEMPs (cVEMPs) are mediated by the vestibular nuclei and uncrossed medial vestibulospinal tract descending in the lower brainstem and spinal cord. In contr

The aim of the present study was to evaluate vestibular nerve involvement in patients with Bell's palsy with ocular and cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMP and cVEMP). Ten patients who were diagnosed with Bell's palsy and ten healthy controls were included. All patients underwent VEMP recordings within 6 days after their initial presentation. Patients with Bell's palsy had greater oVEMP asymmetry ratio comparing to healthy controls (-38.4 ± 28.7 % vs -1.3 ± 19.3 %, p = 0.005). As well N10 latencies of the oVEMP response were prolonged comparing to healthy controls (11.575 vs

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Although the vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) measured from the cervical muscles (cVEMP, cervical VEMP) is well described and has documented clinical utility, its analogue recorded from the extraocular muscles (oVEMP, ocular VEMP) has been described only recently and is currently emerging as an additional test of otolith function. This review will, therefore, summarize recent developments in VEMP research with a focus on the oVEMP.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies suggest that the oVEMP is produced by otolith afferents in the superior vestibular nerve division, wh

OBJECTIVE: Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) are caused by a short-latency reflex recorded from averaged electromyography from the sternocleidomastoid muscle evoked by intense auditory clicks. Besides peripheral vestibulopathy, abnormal VEMPs can be caused by lesions of the brainstem. The aim of this study was to analyze the topology of ischemic brain lesions generating pathological VEMPs.
METHODS: Twenty-nine patients with brainstem infarcts were prospectively studied using VEMPs and MR imaging to evaluate the brainstem representation of the VEMP reflex. Individual brainstem lesi

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The objective was to evaluate dizziness as the first symptom of endolymphatic hydrops, which could provide valuable information on the initial stages of endolymphatic hydrops development.
STUDY DESIGN: The present investigation was specifically designed to establish whether a combination of the traditional glycerol test and the vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) glycerol test is capable of diagnosing endolymphatic hydrops early and to identify potential Meniere's disease. The study was limited to patients who complained of dizziness as their only vestibular sym

The aim of this study was to investigate vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) and their clinical significance in Behcet's disease. Twenty-six patients with Behcet's disease and 25 healthy volunteers were evaluated for pure tone audiometry, caloric response, and VEMPs. Sensorineural hearing loss was found in 53.8% of patients with Behcet's disease, which was significantly higher than controls. Four patients had canal paresis, but no controls; this difference was not significant. Although VEMP recordings were elicited in all study subjects, mean p13 and n23 latencies were prolonged in B

The goal of this study was to determine whether there was an association between perinatal risk factors of prematurity and vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs). A prospective case-control trial was designed. Fifty preterm newborns (100 ears) with a gestational age <37 weeks were included. The control group consisted of 20 healthy term infants (40 ears). VEMP recordings were performed, and mean latencies of p13 were calculated in all study subjects. Multivariable logistic regression was used to investigate the influence of perinatal variables on abnormal VEMP responses. VEMPs were elic

Neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2) is characterized by bilateral vestibular neurofibromas. Although the facial nerve, the cochlear nerve, and the superior division of the vestibular nerve can be evaluated before surgery, whether the inferior division of the vestibular nerve is affected remains undetermined without an operation. A total of 7 patients with NF2 (2 men and 5 women) underwent pure tone audiometry, caloric testing, vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) testing, and magnetic resonance imaging. Audiometry revealed mean hearing levels of less than 26 dB for 1 ear, 26 to 70 dB for 8 ears,
