OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the signal intensity (SI) change of the labyrinth in patients with vestibular schwannoma on isotropic 3D fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) imaging at 3 T.
METHODS: Thirty-four patients with surgically confirmed or radiologically diagnosed vestibular schwannoma were included in this study. Retrospectively, we visually and quantitatively compared the SIs of the cochlea and vestibule on the affected side with those on the unaffected side. We also investigated whether there was correlation between the SI ratios (SIRs) of the labyrinth

A 40-year-old man presented with conductive hearing loss and pressure- and sound-related vestibular symptoms. Computed tomography and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging revealed the presence of a cholesteatoma involving the vestibular labyrinth. The patient underwent a canal-wall-up tympanoplasty, which revealed evidence of a disruption of the vestibular labyrinth and a wide dehiscence of the vestibule, which was immediately resurfaced. At the 2-month follow-up, the patient's pressure- and sound-related vestibular symptoms had disappeared. Pure-tone audiometry showed a reduction in

Sensorineural hearing loss and/or vertigo are rare but severe complications of stapes surgery for otosclerosis, ranging from 0.2 to 3%. Management of such complications depends on the underlying cause: intravestibular protrusion of the prosthesis, perilymph fistula, labyrinthitis, and reparative granuloma extending into the vestibule. Surgery is mandatory in cases of intravestibular prosthesis or of persistent perilymph fistula. In cases of suppurative labyrinthitis or reparative granuloma extending into the vestibule, prognosis is usually poor, despite aggressive medical therapy or revision s

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Our aim was to identify whether specific patterns of ossification in labyrinthitis ossificans are associated with the known risk factors. Labyrinthitis ossificans has been described as sequela of prior temporal bone trauma, prior infection, and other disorders including sickle cell disease. Specific patterns of mineralization in the membranous labyrinth associated with these risk factors has not been previously described.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study evaluating temporal bone CT scans at our institution from November 2005 to May 2018 in patients

This article reviews recent imaging developments in various diseases of the membranous labyrinth. Membranous labyrinth is the initial receptor for acoustic stimuli. Exciting progress has been made in the imaging evaluation of the normal and diseased labyrinth. Structures of the membranous labyrinth, such as the cochlea, vestibule, semicircular canals, and endolymphatic duct and sac can be visualized on routine MR scans. Using high-resolution MR imaging techniques, researches have been able to visualize the cochlear duct, scala tympani, scala vestibuli, and even the otolithic mass. The sensitiv

Seven primary tumours of the vestibule and inner ear are described, six schwannomas and one traumatic fibroma. Schwannomas in this situation may occur as sporadic tumours, or may be a feature of neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF-2). In the latter condition they may occur in isolation or in association with, but separate from, schwannomas arising in the internal meatus. Direct extension into the vestibule of an intrameatal vestibular schwannoma is well reported, but extension of an intravestibular tumour into the internal meatus is not described. Traumatic fibromas of the vestibule are rare and the

At present total sequestration of the labyrinth in the case of purulent epitympanitis and cholesteatoma is a rare pathology. This paper describes data from the literature and two observations by the present authors. They offer an efficient method for arresting labyrinthectomy-induced liquorrhea by means of a flap of the lip mucous membrane. They maintain that computer tomography combined with traditional tomography is an informative method for diagnosing labyrinth destruction. They assert that continuous destruction of the labyrinth during prolonged pyorrhea and progressive development of chol

The interrogation and the clinical examination are critical in the research of vertigo etiology. In the context of vertigo, the vital emergencies are of neurological and vascular origins. It is therefore necessary to be able to identify them quickly and simply. Vertigo is a symptom to relieve and the cause is to be diagnosed. Careful questioning combined with neurological examination, nystagmus study, Halmagyi test and skew deviation search are more reliable than imaging in the first 48hours to detect a stroke. There are 12% false negatives in cerebral MRI and 74% false negative in cerebral CT

The report deals with 22 cases of two-phase head-shaking nystagmus. The results can be summarised as follows: 1. The two-phase head-shaking nystagmus is only found in connection with peripheral-vestibular disorders and particularly with unilateral disorders. It occurs only temporarily in the course of the vestibule disorder and may be observable for several months. 2. The head-shaking nystagmus, which follows immediately after the head-shaking (first phase), is to be considered a deficiency nystagmus. After a short period of latency after the disappearance of the first phase, a nystagmus in th

Glutamate decarboxylase and choline acetyltransferase activities with magnitudes similar to those of their homologous enzymes in frog nervous tissue were found in homogenates of the frog labyrinth. Transection of the vestibular nerve resulted in a gradual diminution of choline acetyltransferase activity until it reached an 88% decrease 6 weeks after surgery. In contrast, glutamate decarboxylase activity did not suffer any alteration at any time after nerve excision. The presence of their enzymes of synthesis is evidence of the neurotransmitter participation of GABA and acetylcholine in the fro

Pneumolabyrinth is a rare condition with air bubbles existing in the vestibule and/or cochlea. We report a case of pneumolabyrinth without trauma that was suspected to be caused by labyrinthitis. A 65-year-old man presented with vertigo and hearing loss in the left ear after catching a cold. Computed tomography performed after there had been no improvement in the patient's symptoms showed the presence of air bubbles in the vestibule, semicircular canals and cochlea. The patient was transferred to our hospital with suspected perilymphatic fistula. Bacterial infection was suspected after the lab

A 51-year-old man had progressive hearing loss over more than 15 years. He had bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Computed tomography (CT) showed extensive bilateral demineralization of the cochlear capsule, which is characteristic of diffuse cochlear otosclerosis. Three-dimensional fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (3D-FLAIR) of magnetic resonance imaging before enhancement revealed high signals in the cochlea and vestibule. Postcontrast 3D-FLAIR revealed enhancement of the basal turn of the left cochlea. This is the first published case of the breakdown of the blood-labyrinth bar

Temporal bone histopathology is reported on a case of acute suppurative otitis media, acute suppurative labyrinthitis, and meningitis with death of the patient 20 days after stapes surgery. Purulent exudate invaded the vestibule by the oval window through a displaced footplate. The main pathway of infection to the menings was extension along the branches of the vesticular nerve to the internal auditory meatus and to the subarachnoid space.
