We present a rare case of traumatic facial and vestibulocochlear nerve injury in the internal acoustic canal in the absence of a temporal bone fracture. A 2.5-year-old female presented with sudden-onset left-sided facial paralysis and ipsilateral total hearing loss after being hit by a falling television. High-resolution computed tomography revealed an occipital fracture line that spared the temporal bone and otic capsule. Diagnostic auditory brainstem response testing showed that wave V at 90-db normal hearing level was absent in the left ear. Needle electromyography revealed severe axonal in

OBJECTIVE: To study the surgical anatomy of the labyrinthine artery (LA) and the subarcuate artery (SA), their anatomic relationships, and clinical implications, as injury of the LA can result in hearing loss.
METHODS: Ten formalin-fixed, latex-colored specimens were studied (20 sides). After retrosigmoid craniotomy and neurovascular dissection under microscopic magnification, 4-mm 0° and 30° endoscopic lenses were used to improve visualization. Results were statistically analyzed.
RESULTS: The LA was a constant artery that followed the vestibulocochlear nerve into the internal auditory cana

Preliminary findings based on earlier retrospective studies of 229 wartime head injuries managed by the Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC)/National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) Neurosurgery Service during the period 2003-08 detected a threefold rise in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) manifestations (10.45%) among Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) having concomitant vestibulocochlear injuries compared to 3% for the TBI group without vestibulo-cochlear damage (VCD), prompting the authors to undertake a more focused study of the vestibulo-auditory pathway in explaining the development of po

Background and Objectives: The labyrinthine artery (LA) is a small but surgically important vessel encountered during procedures involving the cerebellopontine angle (CPA). Variations in its number, origin, and relationship to the facial-vestibulocochlear nerve complex may increase the risk of vascular injury during CPA surgery. The aim of this cadaveric microdissection study was to evaluate the number, origin, and course of the LA within the CPA and to characterize its relationship to the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) and the facial-vestibulocochlear nerve complex. Materials and

Sensorineural hearing loss is a disabling condition. In the post-embryonic and adult mammalian inner ear, the regeneration of auditory hair cells, spiral ganglion neurons or their axons does not occur naturally. This decrease in excitable neurons limits the success of auditory rehabilitation. Allografts and xenografts have shown promise in the treatment of a variety of neurological diseases. Fetal dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons can extend functional connections in the rat spinal cord. Embryonic stem cells (ES cells) and adult neural stem cells (ANSC) have the potential to differentiate int

BACKGROUND: The temporal bone is one of the most complex bones in the human body. Fractures require significant force and are usually associated with extensive damage to adjacent structures.
OBJECTIVE: Which imaging modality facilitates the assessment of petrous bone fractures, and which anatomical landmarks may be used for orientation?
METHODS: A literature search on PubMed.gov was conducted to determine the current state of research.
RESULTS: Injuries to the petrous part of the temporal bone often involve the facial nerve and the vestibulocochlear nerve, as well as the cochlea and the ves

The effect of traction injury to the eighth nerve on the compound action potentials (CAPs) recorded from the exposed nerve in response to tonebursts and click sounds was compared to responses elicited by continuous tones and noise that were amplitude-modulated with pseudorandom noise. Responses to the continuous sounds were presented in the form of cross-correlograms between the averaged response, with the averager locked to the periodicity of the noise and one period of the noise. While the wave form of these cross-correlograms was similar to the wave form of the response to the same, but unm

Trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm, vestibulocochlear neuralgia and glossopharyngeal neuralgia represent the most common neurovascular compression syndromes. Repeated vascular pulsations at the vulnerable transitional zone of the individual cranial nerves lead to focal axonal injury and demyelination. High-resolution 3-D T2-weighted MR imaging is essential in detecting and mapping neurovascular compression for directed therapy. Knowledge of the specific nerve root exit, the transitional zones, and the adjacent vasculature is critical in proper management. Treatment options for these neurov

OBJECTIVE Surgical exposure and decompression of the entire trigeminal nerve in a conventional lateral supracerebellar approach can be challenging because of blockages from the superior petrosal vein complex, cerebellum, and vestibulocochlear nerve. The authors demonstrate a novel suprafloccular approach via the petrosal fissure and venous corridors that can be used as a substitute for the conventional route used to treat trigeminal neuralgia and present a consecutive series of patients and their clinical outcomes. METHODS Preoperative and postoperative clinical data from 420 patients who unde

Although radiologic methods confirm the diagnosis of patients with large vestibular schwannomas, these methods usually indicate only the size of the tumor and its possible nerve compression. Electrodiagnostic methods can reveal the functional state of the nerves, particularly the trigeminal and facial nerves, as well as providing a basis for objectively evaluating nerve injury. Due to the lack of an established objective evaluation method, electrodiagnostic methods were utilized to assess injury to the cranial nerve in a patient with a large vestibular schwannoma. A 79-year-old woman presented

PURPOSE: Cochlear implantation (CI) in patients with sensorineural hearing loss caused by a vestibular schwannoma (VS) represents a unique subtype of hearing rehabilitation, as the outcome may be compromised by vestibulocochlear nerve injury as part of the natural VS history or due to iatrogenic trauma induced by surgical tumor removal. This paper aims to review and report contemporary knowledge and practice regarding feasibility and outcomes of simultaneous vestibular schwannoma resection and cochlear implantation to serve as a reference and guide for future surgery and studies.

Iatrogenic nerve injury during surgery is a major source of concern for both patients and surgeons. This study aimed to identify the nerves most commonly injured during surgery, along with the commonly associated operative procedures. A literature search was conducted using the PubMed database to identify nerves commonly injured during surgery, along with the surgical procedure associated with the injury. The following 11 nerves, ranked in order with their associated surgical procedures, were found to be the most commonly injured: (a) intercostobrachial nerve in axillary lymph node dissections

INTRODUCTION: Vestibular schwannoma (VS) is a benign tumour of cerebellopontine angle which total microsurgical resection is considered as a complex surgery. In Bosnia, VS microsurgical resection is performed occasionally and exclusively at the University Neurosurgical Depart. in Sarajevo, but radiosurgery of these tumours is completely absent.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The role of microsurgery in resection of VS is being presented. Through analyzed series of operated patients (MJLink), we evaluated the correlation of VII and VIII nerves postoperative lesion with different operative approaches. Ho

The present study investigated the effect of seventh and eight cranial nerve lesions on the prominence of calcitonin gene-related peptide in the hypoglossal (XII), facial (VII), abducens (VI), and oculomotor (III) cranial nerve nuclei. Guinea pigs were anesthetized and subjected to unilateral cochlear removal, vestibular end organ ablation, and seventh nerve transection. After a survival period ranging from 4 h to 5 days, each animal was anesthetized and perfused intracardially. Frozen sections were collected through the brainstem and stained immunohistochemically for calcitonin gene-related p
