Enhancing quality of mental health service for veterans with seizures.

Psychiatric disorders are commonly identified in people with seizures (PWS). Comorbid mood, anxiety, and trauma- and stressor-related disorders are highly prevalent and not consistently recognized or treated promptly. Veterans with seizures are particularly vulnerable to neuropsychiatric comorbidities, including a higher prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. In this article, we describe an overview of common mental health issues, their impact on quality of life, and available resources from the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Epilepsy Centers of Excelle

The mental health needs of military service members and veterans.

The prevalence in active duty military service members of 30-day DSM-IV psychiatric disorders, including posttraumatic stress disorders and major depressive disorder, is greater than among sociodemographically-matched civilians. Only 23-40% of returning military who met strict criteria for any mental health problem in 2004 had received professional help in the past year. One-fourth of Regular Army soldiers meet criteria for a 30-day DSM-IV mental disorder, two-thirds of whom report a pre-enlistment age of onset. Both pre- and post-enlistment age of onset are predictors of severe role impairmen

Use of outpatient mental health services by homeless veterans after hurricanes.

Little is known about the impact of hurricanes on people who are homeless at the time a disaster occurs. Although researchers have extensively studied the psychosocial consequences of disaster produced homelessness on the general population, efforts focused on understanding how homeless people fare have been limited to a few media reports and the gray literature. In the event of a hurricane, homeless veterans may be at increased risk for negative outcomes because of their cumulative vulnerabilities. Health care statistics consistently document that homeless veterans experience higher rates of

Patient-centered behavioral services for women veterans with mental health conditions.

The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is undergoing a transformational shift from disease-focused care to a Whole Health model that emphasizes physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health and well-being. As this shift is occurring, women veterans using VHA services face challenges navigating a system that has historically served a primarily male demographic, without consistent consensus on which services require specialization by gender. A quality improvement project was conducted to solicit feedback on VHA behavioral and wellness programs from women veterans enrolled in VHA mental hea

Military veterans and civilians' mental health diagnoses: an analysis of secondary mental health services.

PURPOSE: Healthcare provision in the United Kingdom (UK) falls primarily to the National Health Service (NHS) which is free at the point of access. In the UK, there is currently no national marker to identify military veterans in electronic health records, nor a requirement to record it. This study aimed to compare the sociodemographic characteristics and recorded mental health diagnoses of a sample of veterans and civilians accessing secondary mental health services. METHODS: The Military Service Identification Tool, a machine learning computer tool, was employed to identify veterans and civ

Utilization patterns of homeless and health care services by homeless veterans in the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Ending veteran homelessness remains a priority within the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA). Efforts over the past decade have led to encouraging declines in veteran homelessness but have required significant funds and resources. Analysis of clinical characteristics and utilization patterns of veterans accessing VA homeless programing can clarify the needs of and inform treatment for this subset of the veteran population. Veterans were categorized according to low, moderate, or high rates of VA homeless service use from 2005 to 2024 (N = 1,086,852) and compared based on demographic profi

Health Service Access Among Homeless Veterans: Health Access Challenges Faced by Homeless African American Veterans.

Veteran homelessness is a public health crisis, especially among the disproportionate number of minority veterans in the homeless veteran population. African American homeless veterans in particular face unique challenges accessing appropriate health care services to meet their medical needs. Their needs are often underrepresented in the literature on veteran homelessness. Drawing together over 80 studies and government reports from the last two decades, this review provides a timely synopsis of homeless veterans' health care access, with a particular focus on the barriers faced by African Ame

Understanding How Contingency Staffing Programs Can Support Mental Health Services in the Veterans Health Administration.

Introduction: Beginning in 2019, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) prioritized improving access to care nationally to deliver virtual care and implemented 18 regionally based Clinical Resource Hubs (CRHs) to meet this priority. This observational study describes the quantity and types of care delivered by CRH Mental Health teams, and the professions of those hired to deliver it. Methods: A retrospective cohort study, based on national VA CRH mental health care utilization data and CRH staffing data for CRH's first 3 years, was conducted. Results: CRH Mental Health teams primarily used Te

How mental health providers spend their time: a survey of 10 Veterans Health Administration mental health services.

BACKGROUND: Allocation of provider time across clinical, administrative, educational, and research activities may influence job satisfaction, productivity, and quality of care, yet we know little about what determines time allocation. AIMS: To investigate factors associated with time allocation, we surveyed all mental health providers in one Veterans Health Administration (VHA) network. We hypothesized that both facility characteristics (academic affiliation, type of organization of services, serving as a hub for treatment of severely mentally ill, facility size) and individual provider chara

Identifying US veterans who access services from health care for the homeless clinics.

Research on veterans experiencing homelessness is predominantly focused on the US Department of Veterans Affairs setting, despite the fact that substantial numbers receive services from Health Care for the Homeless (HCH) clinics. We explored how HCH clinics identified veteran patients through a survey of administrators (49% response rate). The majority (98%) identified veterans but used varied language and approaches. Implementing a streamlined, culturally competent identification process is vital to collecting accurate data, connecting veterans with benefits, and informing treatment plans.

Traumatic Brain Injury among Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Veterans accessing Veterans Health Administration Homeless Services: A Preliminary Examination.

Veterans experiencing homelessness have elevated rates of traumatic brain injury (TBI) diagnoses. There remains limited research on subsets of homeless Veterans, including Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) Veterans. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) electronic medical records of 724 752 Veterans who accessed Veterans Health Administration (VHA) homeless services from January 2005-December 2018 were examined. Of the total sample, 1177 identified as NHPI, with comparator samples of non-NHPI (n=723 575) and White (n=418 085) Veterans also generated. Rates of TBI were compared between

Expanding Home- and Community-Based Service Access in the Veterans Health Administration.

OBJECTIVES: The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers a continuum of home- and community-based services (HCBS) to support veterans' ability to remain in their homes and communities as they age. Although VA delivers some HCBS directly, many HCBS are provided through contracted agencies in the community. We sought to understand the strategies VA staff use to facilitate veterans' HCBS access, particularly as these services become increasingly difficult to access in many areas. DESIGN: Qualitative descriptive study using semistructured interviews. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A purposeful s
