In a study to investigate whether the quantitative assessment of temperature and vibration thresholds can improve the evaluation of the neurological symptoms in vibration syndrome 37 patients with neurological symptoms (paraesthesias, numbness, pain) in the hands who had worked with hand held vibrating tools and 46 healthy controls not exposed to vibration were examined. Temperature thresholds were measured on the thenar eminence and on the volar side of the second and third fingers held together. Vibration thresholds were determined on the dorsum of the hand and on the dorsal side of the seco

At one Finnish foundry all the workers had typical symptoms of vibration induced white finger (VWF) after they began using a new type of pedestal grinding machine. The objectives of this study were to establish the severity of the symptoms and the difference in vibration exposure between the new and the old machines. Vibration detection thresholds and grip forces were measured, as well as the vibration in the casting and in the wrist simultaneously. The mean latency for VWF among the grinders was 10.3 months after the change of pedestal grinding machines. All the grinders had numbness in their

INTRODUCTION: Resistive exercise combined with whole-body vibration (WBV) and short-arm human centrifugation is being considered as a countermeasure to mitigate muscle and bone loss in astronauts during prolonged space missions. WBV may provide exercise benefits or adverse effects on organs and the lower back. These effects may result from vibration transmitted throughout the body. The objective of this study was to compare vibration transmission (VT) from the ground to the body during resistance vibration exercise (RVE) comprising squat and calf raise performed on a rotational vibration plate

The vibration perception thresholds (VPT) at six frequencies from 16 to 500 Hz were examined in 77 workers exposed to hand-arm vibration and in 77 controls using a limits procedure. A dose-response relationship between VPTs and exposure to vibration was found, and the age-adjusted VPTs at each frequency were higher in workers exposed to vibration than in controls. Carpal tunnel syndrome (at 250 Hz) and consumption of alcohol (at 125 Hz) significantly increased the VPT, but vibration-induced white finger was not correlated with VPT. Indices for low (16 and 32 Hz) and high (63-500 Hz) VPT freque

Stewart, Alice M., and Goda, D. F. (1970).Brit. J. industr. Med.,27, 19-27. Vibration syndrome. Raynaud's phenomenon, or the finger blanching of men who work with vibrating tools, is undoubtedly due to vasospasm. Nevertheless the abnormal element in the situation is not a series of traumatized nerve endings but a deposition of callus under the palmar surfaces of fingers and thumbs. This deposition is a late consequence of the most distinctive, but not necessarily the most painful, of the numerous effects incurred as a result of the tool speed being completely out of the control of the operator

Today, in this age of technology, vibration caused by machinery is an almost universal hazard. Vibration transferred from a machine to the human body may cause discomfort, a reduction of performance, and even injury. Vibratory manual tools may cause damage to the circulatory system of the upper extremities (Raynaud's syndrome), to the peripheral nerves (peripheral neuropathy), and to the bones and joints (aseptic necrosis, fatigue fractures, degenerative joint disease). Vehicles and machines causing floor vibration cause degenerative disc disease of the lumbar spine. The pathogenesis of vibrat

UNLABELLED: Vibration-reducing (VR) gloves have been used to reduce the hand-transmitted vibration exposures from machines and powered hand tools but their effectiveness remains unclear, especially for finger protection. The objectives of this study are to determine whether VR gloves can attenuate the vibration transmitted to the fingers and to enhance the understanding of the mechanisms of how these gloves work. Seven adult male subjects participated in the experiment. The fixed factors evaluated include hand force (four levels), glove condition (gel-filled, air bladder, no gloves), and locat

The clinico-functional examination of agricultural machine-operators, truck drivers, excavator and boring machine operators revealed that, under low-frequency general vibration, polymorphic pathologic changes occur in human organism. Those include peripheral vascular and neuritic disorders and changes in the vertebral column. The most peculiar symptoms of VD are dealt with. The data obtained show to the importance of further elaboration of differential diagnostic criteria of VD, specifying its pathogenic mechanisms and prevention measures working out.

Supine postures are increasingly adopted in medical transport, long-duration flights, and other healthcare environments. This study is aimed to identify the effect of vibration direction and magnitude on the objective and subjective responses of the human body in a supine posture. The transmissibilities to the head, chest, abdomen, and thighs of 12 male subjects were measured with single-axis random vibrations in longitudinal (z axis), lateral (y axis), and vertical (x axis) direction at 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 ms-2 r.m.s. Subjective discomfort was determined using the absolute magnitude estima

Exposure to vibration at work with associated health hazards is rather common. Severe symptoms can significantly impair working and functional capacity, whereby occupational health services should invest in the primary and secondary prevention of vibration-induced handicaps. Patients with work-related numbness of the fingers and Raynaud's syndrome should be referred to occupational health service. We describe a shoe worker diagnosed with occupational disease caused by vibration. His profession and way of exposure are unusual, but the symptoms are typical for vibration disease.

The vibration syndrome is an often unrecognized occupational neurovascular disease with a prevalence of more than 70% in certain high-risk occupations. Early recognition is crucial because continued exposure to vibration can lead to irreversible ischemic injury and loss of digits. Digital ischemia due to the vibration syndrome may be due to a vasospastic phenomenon, an organic microangiopathy or arterial thrombosis. Demyelinating neuropathy and carpal tunnel syndrome are often associated. Many pathophysiological mechanisms are implicated: hyperactivity of the central sympathetic nervous system

Nineteen consecutive patients claiming compensation for vibration white finger were reviewed. The cold provocation test was found to be of no value in confirming a diagnosis of vibration white finger. Small cysts were apparent on the radiographs in 61% of patients' wrists but none had developed significant degenerative changes of the wrist or digits. In this group of claimants, 63% had carpal tunnel syndrome on nerve conduction studies.

Vibration white finger (VWF) occurs in workers who use vibrating tools. On exposure to vibration or cold, patients experience blanching, numbness and pain in the fingers due to exaggerated vasoconstriction. This may involve both central sympathetic hyper-reactivity and local vasoactive factors. In advanced cases, hypertrophy of vascular smooth muscle causes arterial occlusion and ulceration. Diagnostic tests for VWF are unreliable. In early cases, cessation of vibration exposure arrests the progression of disease and may cause symptom remission. Patients with VWF should keep themselves warm, e

Predicted and observed prevalences and latency periods of vibration-induced white finger (VWF) were examined among workers exposed to hand-arm vibration. The different physical characteristics of vibration--spectra and impulsiveness--were measured. The following groups of workers were included in the study: forest workers (n = 199), pedestal grinders (n = 12), stone workers (n = 16), shipyard workers (n = 171), and platers (n = 5). The exposure to vibration was measured according to the ISO 5349 method. The impulsiveness of vibration was defined as the difference between peak levels and RMS le

A case of relapsing polychondritis presenting as tracheomalacia is reported in which an unusual low pitched sound was heard at the mouth and over the chest wall during expiration. The sound was associated with expiratory airflow limitation and oscillation on the flow trace of approximately 50 Hz. Spectral analysis of the sound showed it to have the characteristics of sounds produced by flutter in flow limited flexible tubes. These observations suggest that the sound was produced by airflow induced flutter in the trachea and main airways and is further evidence in support of the dynamic flutter

The purpose of the study was to investigate if vibration-induced white finger may be a reversible symptom after cessation of vibration exposure. Fifty-nine welders, previously employed by a ship building company and who had shown various levels of vibration-induced vasospastic symptoms in the hand were interviewed 5 to 6 years after closure of the company. Out of the 43 patients exposed to no or insignificant vibration subsequently, 28 claimed improvement, 11 claimed unchanged problems and four complained of worse problems. Twelve of these patients had the cold provocation test repeated at fol

Prolonged exposure to hand-arm vibration (HAV) has been associated with hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the association between daily hand-arm vibration exposure and HAVS among farmers. A convenience sampling method was used to select 76 farmers from the Nong Suea district in Pathum Thani province. Data were collected using a three-part questionnaire that included demographics, work conditions, initial screening for HAVS, and VM31 vibration meter (Hand-Arm Accelerator sensor: KS963B10). The vibration measured based on the technical method describ

Triboelectric nanogenerator-based vibration sensors offer a promising solution for large-scale, distributed vibration monitoring in mechanical equipment and civil infrastructure. However, their performance is often compromised by inherent structural resonance, which introduces frequency-dependent sensitivity and distorts broadband vibration waveforms. In this work, we present a quasi-zero stiffness triboelectric vibration sensor (QZS-TEVS) that extends the post-resonance operational region towards ultralow frequencies, facilitating high-fidelity broadband vibration characterization. PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the influence of whole-body vibration (WBV) frequency, amplitude, and body posture on lower limb muscle activation among people with chronic stroke, and whether the EMG response to vibration stimulus differed between paretic and non-paretic side. The relationship between muscle activation and WBV transmission was also examined.
METHOD: Thirty-two participants with chronic stroke performed three different exercises on the WBV platform with different vibration conditions (frequency: 20 Hz, 30 Hz, 40 Hz; amplitude: 0.8 mm, 1.5 mm), or without vibration. M
