Comparative persistence of opportunistic Vibrio alginolyticus and major foodborne Vibrio species (Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, and Vibrio vulnificus) in ready-to-eat seafood under different storage conditions.

Vibrio alginolyticus is an opportunistic marine bacterium capable of infecting both humans and aquatic animals, in addition to major foodborne pathogenic Vibrio species (Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, and Vibrio vulnificus). Although these species are increasingly detected in seafood, differences in their persistence under conditions simulating real food systems remain poorly understood. This study investigated the growth, survival, and recovery of V. alginolyticus and compared its behavior with those of the three pathogenic species in ready-to-eat seafood (flatfish, smoked salmon,

Occurrence and potential pathogenesis of Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus on the South Coast of Sweden.

During the summer of 2006, several wound infections - of which three were fatal - caused by Vibrio cholerae were reported from patients who had been exposed to water from the Baltic Sea. Before these reports, we initiated a sampling project investigating the occurrence of potential human pathogenic V. cholerae, Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus in The Sound between Sweden and Denmark. The Blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) was used as an indicator to follow the occurrence of vibrios over time. Molecular analyses showed high frequencies of the most potent human pathogenic Vibrio spp.; 53%

Prevalence of a Vibrio cholerae 18-kDa antigen in vibrios.

An 18-kDa protein that occurs in Vibrio cholerae has been described as an in vivo and low-iron regulated outer membrane antigen. Monoclonal antibodies which recognized this antigen were protective as passive vaccines in the infant rabbit model of cholera disease. In this study, those monoclonal antibodies were used in three immunological assays for surveillance of various bacteria for the 18-kDa antigen. ELISA, and Western blot assays gave variable results with bacteria or outer membrane preparations. The biodot assay was the most sensitive test, detecting the 18-kDa antigen in 29 of 29 V. cho

[Pathogenic factors of vibrios with special emphasis on Vibrio vulnificus].

Bacteria of the genus Vibrio are normal habitants of the aquatic environment and play roles for biocontrole of aquatic ecosystem, but some species are believed to be human pathogens. These species can be classified into two groups according to the types of diseases they cause: the gastrointestinal infections and the extraintestinal infections. The pathogenic species produce various pathogenic factors including enterotoxin, hemolysin, cytotoxin, protease, siderophore, adhesive factor, and hemagglutinin. We studied various pathogenic factors of vibrios with special emphasis on protease and hemol

Occurrence of virulence determinants in vibrio cholerae, vibrio mimicus, vibrio alginolyticus, and vibrio parahaemolyticus isolates from important water resources of Eastern Cape, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Virulence determinants are crucial to the risk assessment of pathogens in an environment. This study investigated the presence of eleven key virulence-associated genes in Vibrio cholerae (n = 111) and Vibrio mimicus (n = 22) and eight virulence determinants in Vibrio alginolyticus (n = 65) and Vibrio parahaemolyticus (n = 17) isolated from six important water resources in Eastern Cape, South Africa, using PCR techniques. The multiple virulence gene indexes (MVGI) for sampling sites and isolates as well as hotspots for potential vibriosis outbreaks among sampling sites were determin

Vibrio limimangrovi sp. nov., Vibrio phycocola sp. nov. and Vibrio sediminis sp. nov., isolated from coastal habitats.

Four marine bacterial strains of the genus Vibrio, designated WJH972T, RC27, FJH11T, and HA2012T, were isolated from coastal habitats in China. Phenotypic and physiological characterization showed that all four strains are Gram-stain-negative, facultatively anaerobic, short rod-shaped cells, and motile. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities between the isolates and their closest relatives were 96.5% - 98.2%, above the genus-level threshold but below the species delineation cutoff. Genomic analysis revealed that strains WJH972T and RC27 shared an average nucleotide identity (ANI) of 98.7% and

Environmental vibrios represent a source of antagonistic compounds that inhibit pathogenic Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio parahaemolyticus strains.

With the overuse of antibiotics, many pathogens including Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio parahaemolyticus have evolved multidrug resistance making treatment more difficult. While understanding the mechanisms that underlie pathogenesis is crucial, knowledge of bacterial interactions of V. cholerae and V. parahaemolyticus could provide insight to their susceptibility outside of the human host. Based on previous work showing competition among environmental strains, we predict that marine-derived bacteria should inhibit Vibrio pathogens and may be a source of unique antibiotic compounds. We tested a c

Vibrio spp. infections.

Vibrio is a genus of ubiquitous bacteria found in a wide variety of aquatic and marine habitats; of the >100 described Vibrio spp., ~12 cause infections in humans. Vibrio cholerae can cause cholera, a severe diarrhoeal disease that can be quickly fatal if untreated and is typically transmitted via contaminated water and person-to-person contact. Non-cholera Vibrio spp. (for example, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio alginolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus) cause vibriosis - infections normally acquired through exposure to sea water or through consumption of raw or undercooked contaminated seafood. Vibrio vulnificus septicemia.

A 33-year-old Japanese male, who had a three year history of biopsy-proved liver cirrhosis, was admitted to the hospital on June, 24, 1983 with a sudden onset of fever (38.6 degrees C), chills, generalized pain, nausea, anorexia, weakness, and eruption over the entire body. The patient went into shock and died about 7 hours after admission. Blood cultures before death were positive for V. vulnificus. Postmortem microscopic examination revealed "necrotizing vasculitis" in the small and large intestines, stomach, and skin, and also showed marked toxic epidermal necrolysis. This case matches the

Vibrio vulnificus septicaemia.

Vibrio vulnificus is an opportunistic pathogen capable of causing a fulminant septicaemia in susceptible patients. Underlying chronic diseases such as liver impairment and immunosuppression are important factors contributing to the severity of the infection and outcome. Early suspicion and diagnosis with appropriate antibiotic therapy is important as delay can adversely affect outcome. For those who develop tissue necrotizing fasciitis, early surgical debridement is recommended to allow better penetration of antibiotics and also to reduce the severity of the septicaemia. Mortality is quoted as

Vibrio vulnificus infection.

We report 3 cases of Vibrio vulnificus infections from Taiwan. Patient 1, who manifested symptoms of primary septicemia, died after 2 days. Patient 2, who had a wound infection and signs and symptoms of sepsis but negative blood cultures, responded to tobramycin and chloramphenicol plus surgical debridement, and recovered after 26 days of hospitalization. Patient 3 had secondary septicemia originating from a wound inflicted by a shrimp. Originally, the patient seemed to respond to ceftazidime and amikacin treatment along with surgical debridement, but subsequently died from adult respiratory d

Proteases produced by vibrios.

Bacteria of the genus Vibrio are normal habitants of the aquatic environment but the some species are believed to be human pathogens. Pathogenic vibrios produce various pathogenic factors, and the proteases are also recognized to play pathogenic roles in the infection: the direct roles by digesting many kinds of host proteins or indirect roles by processing other pathogenic protein factors. Especially VVP from Vibrio vulnificus is thought to be a major pathogenic factor of the vibrio. Although HA/P, the V. cholerae hemagglutinin/protease, is not a direct toxic factor of cholera vibrio, its sig
