Molecular mechanisms of Vibrio parahaemolyticus pathogenesis.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a Gram-negative halophilic bacterium that is mainly distributed in the seafood such as fish, shrimps and shellfish throughout the world. V. parahaemolyticus can cause diseases in marine aquaculture, leading to huge economic losses to the aquaculture industry. More importantly, it is also the leading cause of seafood-borne diarrheal disease in humans worldwide. With the development of animal model, next-generation sequencing as well as biochemical and cell biological technologies, deeper understanding of the virulence factors and pathogenic mechanisms of V. parahaemol

Necrotizing fasciitis due to Vibrio parahaemolyticus.

A report of a fatal case of necrotizing fasciitis of the leg due to Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection. This organism frequently causes minor infections in seawater-exposed wounds. In this case the patient died due to fulminant sepsis caused by necrotizing fasciitis, despite surgical debridement. This case serves as a reminder for targeted antibiotic coverage for Vibrio in any serious saltwater-related infection, and as an illustration of the rapid and severe systemic toxicity associated with Vibrio parahaemolyticus necrotizing fasciitis, even in the setting of minor initial skin findings.

Inactivation of Vibrio parahaemolyticus by Aqueous Ozone.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus contamination causes serious foodborne illness and has become a global health problem. As a disinfectant, aqueous ozone can effectively kill a number of bacteria, viruses, parasites, and other microorganisms. In this study, three factors, namely, the aqueous ozone concentration, the exposure time, and the bacterial density, were analyzed by response surface methodology, and the aqueous ozone concentration was the most influential factor in the sterilization ratio. Under low aqueous ozone concentrations (less than 0.125 mg/l), the bacterial cell membranes remained intact

Fulminant necrotizing fasciitis due to Vibrio parahaemolyticus.

Necrotizing soft-tissue infection due to Vibrio parahaemolyticus is unusual. We report a case of necrotizing fasciitis due to V. parahaemolyticus in a 92-year-old woman with a history of chronic renal failure, diabetes mellitus and malnutrition. Clinical evolution was fulminant and the patient died 6 h after admission. A review of all cases previously reported showed that the infection occurred in patients with underlying diseases through ingestion of raw oysters or inoculation via traumatic injury in marine environments. The mortality rate of all reviewed cases was 42.8 %. In conclusion, V. p

Analysis of antimicrobial resistance and virulence of Vibrio parahaemolyticus.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus poses dual threats to marine ecosystems and human health through seafood-borne transmission. This study reveals critical links between antibiotic resistance and virulence phenotypes in 95 V. parahaemolyticus isolates recovered from 284 retail seafood samples and 12 aquaculture samples (9 diseased shrimp and 3 water samples) collected from multiple coastal regions in Eastern and Southern China. All isolates exhibited multidrug resistance, with ubiquitous resistance to critically important antibiotics including polymyxins (100 %) and sulfonamides (100 %). Phenotypic analy

Comparison of molecular methods for typing Vibrio parahaemolyticus.

An outbreak of Vibrio parahaemolyticus gastroenteritis on Canada's west coast in 1997 emphasized the need to develop molecular methods for differentiation and typing of these organisms. Isolates were analyzed by enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus sequence (ERIC) PCR, detection of restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) in rRNA genes (ribotyping), pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), and RFLP analysis of the genetic locus encoding the polar flagellum (Fla locus RFLP analysis). ERIC PCR and ribotyping were the most informative typing methods, especially when used togeth

Vibrio parahaemolyticus quorum sensing controls phage VP882 transmission.

UNLABELLED: Quorum sensing is a cell-to-cell communication process bacteria use to orchestrate collective behaviors. Quorum sensing involves the production, release, and detection of extracellular signal molecules called autoinducers. Some temperate phages can monitor bacterial autoinducers, enabling them to track the abundance of potential host cells in the vicinity. Quorum-sensing-responsive phages can preferentially launch the transition from lysogeny to lytic replication at high cell density, presumably maximizing transmission. Once the phage lytic program is enacted, if nearby host cells

Occurrence and potential pathogenesis of Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus on the South Coast of Sweden.

During the summer of 2006, several wound infections - of which three were fatal - caused by Vibrio cholerae were reported from patients who had been exposed to water from the Baltic Sea. Before these reports, we initiated a sampling project investigating the occurrence of potential human pathogenic V. cholerae, Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus in The Sound between Sweden and Denmark. The Blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) was used as an indicator to follow the occurrence of vibrios over time. Molecular analyses showed high frequencies of the most potent human pathogenic Vibrio spp.; 53%

Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus in South America: water, seafood and human infections.

The bacterial species, Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus, are ubiquitous in estuaries and coastal waters throughout the world, but they also happen to be important human pathogens. They are concentrated by filter-feeding shellfish which are often consumed raw or undercooked, providing an important potential route of entry for an infective dose of these bacteria. Vibrio parahaemolyticus can cause abdominal cramping, nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, chills and fever. Vibrio vulnificus can cause similar gastrointestinal-related symptoms, but can also spread to the bloodstream, resulting i

Virulence Genes Analysis of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Anti-vibrio Activity of the Citrus Extracts.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus (VP) is a marine bacterium that opportunistically caused foodborne gastroenteritis in human and some diseases in marine animals. The isolated strain of V. parahaemolyticus WS001 from Samut Sakhon, Thailand has a presence of ldh (~ 450 bp) toxA (~ 333 bp) and toxB (~ 1269 bp) genes which showed pathogenicity in shrimp. This strain is suspected as low pathogenicity in human due to the lack of tdh and trh genes for encoding thermostable direct hemolysin (TDH) and TDH-related hemolysin (TRH), respectively. The shrimp pathogenic strain was tested and revealed the multi-antib

Environmental occurrence and clinical impact of Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus: a European perspective.

Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus are ubiquitous Gram-negative bacterial pathogens found naturally in marine and estuarine waters, and are a leading cause of seafood-associated bacterial illness. These pathogens are commonly reported in the USA and in many Asian countries, including China, Japan and Taiwan; however, there is growing concern that V. vulnificus and V. parahaemolyticus may represent an important and increasing clinical problem in Europe. Several factors underlie the need for a greater understanding of these non-cholera vibrios within a European context. First, there i

Rapid Detection and Fast Induction of Viable but Nonculturable Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio cholerae.

Vibrio (V.) species, such as V. parahaemolyticus and V. cholerae, are commonly associated with foodborne infections and are frequently detected in seafood worldwide. Unfavorable environmental conditions and process-related factors can induce a shift from culturable Vibrio cells into viable but nonculturable (VBNC) cells. Conventional culture-based detection methods (ISO 21872-1:2023-06) cannot detect bacteria in the VBNC state, even though these cells remain metabolically active and pathogenic due to the expression of toxin-encoding genes. This study aimed to develop a detection method using v

Environmental vibrios represent a source of antagonistic compounds that inhibit pathogenic Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio parahaemolyticus strains.

With the overuse of antibiotics, many pathogens including Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio parahaemolyticus have evolved multidrug resistance making treatment more difficult. While understanding the mechanisms that underlie pathogenesis is crucial, knowledge of bacterial interactions of V. cholerae and V. parahaemolyticus could provide insight to their susceptibility outside of the human host. Based on previous work showing competition among environmental strains, we predict that marine-derived bacteria should inhibit Vibrio pathogens and may be a source of unique antibiotic compounds. We tested a c
