Mortality among Australian conscripts of the Vietnam conflict era. II. Causes of death.

In a cohort of Australian national service conscripts, death rates from International Classification of Diseases, Eighth Revision (ICD-8) cause of death classes for 19,205 veterans of the Vietnam conflict were compared with those of 25,677 veterans who served only in Australia. Comprehensive, clinically reviewed cause of death data were collected and coded to a single ICD-8 three-digit cause of death code by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Over 98% of the deaths among veterans were included in five classes of causes of death. These were neoplasms (14%), diseases of the circulatory system

Quality of life for veterans and servicemembers with major traumatic limb loss from Vietnam and OIF/OEF conflicts.

The goals of rehabilitation after major limb loss include not only functional restoration but also a return to a high quality of life (QOL). Few studies have identified which factors are associated with QOL in veterans and servicemembers with combat-associated major limb loss. We enrolled Vietnam and Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom (OIF/OEF) veterans and servicemembers in a national survey on prosthetic device use. In the Vietnam group, multivariate analysis found multiple limb loss (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 3.1, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.57-6.02) and satisfaction

Microchimerism decades after transfusion among combat-injured US veterans from the Vietnam, Korean, and World War II conflicts.

BACKGROUND: Blood transfusion after traumatic injury can result in microchimerism (MC) of donor white cells (WBCs) in the recipient as late as 2 to 3 years postinjury, the longest prospective follow-up to date. The purpose of this study was to determine how long transfusion-associated MC lasts after traumatic injury. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A group of US combat veterans who received transfusions who responded to a recruitment notice was retrospectively evaluated. Their blood was sampled, and MC was assessed by quantitative allele-specific polymerase chain reaction detection of differences a

Servicemembers and veterans with major traumatic limb loss from Vietnam war and OIF/OEF conflicts: survey methods, participants, and summary findings.

Care of veterans and servicemembers with major traumatic limb loss from combat theaters is one of the highest priorities of the Department of Veteran Affairs. We achieved a 62% response rate in our Survey for Prosthetic Use from 298 Vietnam war veterans and 283 servicemembers/veterans from Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom (OIF/OEF) who sustained major traumatic limb loss. Participants reported their combat injuries; health status; quality of life; and prosthetic device use, function, rejection, and satisfaction. Despite the serious injuries experienced, health status was rate

Mental Health Impact of Homecoming Experience Among 1730 Formerly Deployed Veterans From the Vietnam War to Current Conflicts: Results From the Veterans' Health Study.

We examined the effects of homecoming support on current mental health among 1730 deployed veterans from Vietnam, Iraq/Afghanistan, Persian Gulf, and other conflicts. The prevalence of current posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was 5.4%, current depression was 8.3%, and 5.4% had suicidal thoughts in the past month. Overall, 26% of veterans had low homecoming support, which was more prevalent among Vietnam veterans (44.3%, p < 0.001). In multivariable logistic regressions, controlling for demographics, combat exposure, number of deployments, trauma history, and operational theater, low postde

Delayed-Onset Neuropathological Complications From a Foramen Magnum and Occipital Crest-Focused Traumatic Brain Injury of the Vietnam War and Other Conflicts: Part II, Research Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Much of the research impacting diagnosis, outcome, and treatment of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) has favored time of consciousness criteria indicative of hemispheric blast focus alone. However, recent animal-based research has widely expanded the diagnostic knowledge base and potential treatment options. METHODS: Recent animal-based research findings of foramen magnum and occipital crest-focused blast injuries in laboratory rats were reviewed and compared to the Part I human case report. RESULTS: Comparing the human case report (Part I) to that of animal research studies fou

Delayed-Onset Neuropathological Complications From a Foramen Magnum and Occipital Crest Focused Traumatic Brain Injury of the Vietnam War and Other Conflicts: Part I, Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of traumatic brain injuries is typically based on hemispheric blasts resulting in degrees of unconsciousness and associated cerebral injuries. This case report describes a Vietnam War era setting in which a traumatic blast wave struck the posterior cranium in the region of the foramen magnum, occipital crest, and other skull openings (orbit, oronasal, and ear) and the unique secondary clinical signs and symptoms experienced over time. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This case report describes secondary delayed-onset clinical signs and symptoms consistent with progressive de

Delayed-Onset Neuropathological Complications From a Foramen Magnum and Occipital Crest Focused TBI of the Vietnam War and Other Conflicts: Part III, Critique of Existing TBI Criteria and Their Operational Controversies.

INTRODUCTION: In this report, we discuss the controversy of the diverse traumatic brain injury (TBI) categorization and taxonomy and the need to develop a new multidimensional and multidisciplinary categorization system that can be an aid in improved diagnostic and prognostic outcomes. Of interest, the heterogeneity of TBI marks the major obstacle to develop effective therapeutic interventions. Currently, the Glasgow Coma Scale has been utilized to guide in the prognosis and clinical management of TBI; it does not encompass the pathophysiological mechanisms leading to neurological deficits tha

War on Two Fronts: The Fight against Parasites in Korea and Vietnam.

The Vietnam War has long been regarded as pivotal in the history of the Republic of Korea, although its involvement in this conflict remains controversial. While most scholarship has focused on the political and economic ramifications of the war - and allegations of brutality by Korean troops - few scholars have considered the impact of the conflict upon medicine and public health. This article argues that the war had a transformative impact on medical careers and public health in Korea, and that this can be most clearly seen in efforts to control parasitic diseases. These diseases were a majo

Child and Family Factors Associated With Child Maltreatment in Vietnam.

This study aims to explore possible risk factors for child maltreatment in Vietnam by investigating the association of child and family factors with different types of child maltreatment (i.e., sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, witnessing parental conflict, and neglect) and the occurrence of multiple types of child maltreatment. Cross-sectional data of 1,851 secondary and high school students aged 12 to 17 years (47.3% boys) in four provinces of Northern Vietnam were obtained using self-report questionnaires. Results indicated that the likelihood of emotional abuse, witnessing par

Vulnerability and resilience among older South Korean Vietnam war veterans: A latent profile analysis.

Relatively little is known about South Korean Vietnam War veterans, despite their being the second largest contingent of troops during the Vietnam War. Earlier research found elevated levels (39%) of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in this older population, due to high exposure to combat and malevolent environments (Lee et al., 2020). The present study investigated classes of vulnerability and resilience among older South Korean Vietnam War veterans, using a latent profile analysis (LPA) on PTSD symptoms, late onset stress symptomology (LOSS), and mental well-being (MWB). The sample cons

Lee Robins' studies of heroin use among US Vietnam veterans.

The work of Robins and her colleagues on heroin addiction among Vietnam veterans sets out in microcosm many of the key factors that play out in the development and maintenance of substance addiction beyond the pharmacology of the drug: price, availability, the process of delivery of the addictive substance, availability of other substances, social norms, education and life circumstances. Robins' studies found high rates of heroin use (34%) and symptoms of heroin dependence (20%) among US soldiers while serving in Vietnam. In the first year after returning to the United States only 1% became re

War across the life course: examining the impact of exposure to conflict on a comprehensive inventory of health measures in an aging Vietnamese population.

BACKGROUND: The majority of evidence indicates that exposure to war and other traumatic events continue to have negative impacts on health across the life course. However, existing research on health effects of war exposure primarily concentrates on short-term impacts among veterans in high-income countries sent elsewhere to battle. Yet, most wars situate in lower- and middle-income countries, where many are now or will soon be entering old age. Consequently, the current burden of exposure to war has ignored an important global population. METHODS: The Vietnam Health and Aging Study (VHAS) is

The mental health of Vietnam theater veterans-the lasting effects of the war: 2016-2017 Vietnam Era Health Retrospective Observational Study.

Mental health data from the 2016-2017 Vietnam Era Health Retrospective Observational Study (VE-HEROeS) were analyzed by cohort, represented by United States Vietnam theater veterans (VTs) who served in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos; nontheater veterans (NTs) without theater service; and age- and sex-matched nonveterans (NVs) without military service. The exposure of interest was Vietnam theater service. Surveys mailed to random samples of veterans (n = 42,393) and nonveterans (n = 6,885) resulted in response rates of 45.0% for veterans (n = 6,735 VTs, Mage = 70.09, SE = 0.04; n = 12,131 NTs) and

Cognitive function following early life war-time stress exposure in a cohort of Vietnamese older adults.

Although Alzheimer's Disease is a leading cause of death in Vietnam and other post-conflict, low- and middle-income countries, aside from studies of veterans in western populations, research on war-related violence and deprivation as risk factors for cognitive disorders remains sparse. Using data from the Vietnam Health and Aging Study, which relied upon a multistage probability sample of 2447 older adults residing in districts of northern Vietnam differentially exposed to wartime bombing and numerous war-related stressors, this paper investigates associations between early-life war-related st

Association of the Military Transition to an All-Volunteer Force and Subsequent Zero-Tolerance Drug Policy with Characteristics of Male Veterans in the Vietnam, Post-Vietnam and Subsequent Post-Post Vietnam Cohorts.

In the 1970s, following the Vietnam Conflict, the U.S. military transitioned to an All-Volunteer Force (AVF). In the 1980's military benefits increased and a zero-tolerance policy for illicit drugs was instituted. Changes in characteristics of veterans deserve study. National survey data from 2012 to 2013 compare vetderan-non-veteran differences in three age cohorts: the Vietnam cohort; the AVF (Post-Vietnam) cohort; and volunteers under the no tolerance policy (Post-Post-Vietnam). Comparisons addressed socio-demographic, behavioral, and substance use and psychiatric diagnoses. Multivariate in

Missile embolism--pulmonary vein to systemic bullet embolism: a case report and review of the literature.

Missile embolism occurs very rarely. It was first reported by Thomas Davis in 1834, and only 153 cases had been reported up to 1988. Rich et al. reported a 0.3% incidence in 7 500 cases of vascular injury in the Vietnam conflict. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of pulmonary vein entry and internal carotid artery embolisation.
