[Viral zoonoses].

In different areas of the World, whether in industrialized or developing countries, zoonoses represent an emerging Public Health concern either as known agents appear in areas or species in which they had not been reported or as new pathogens parasite Human as consequence of successful host switching. Epidemiological data outlined that vectorborne viral zoonoses are of particular relevance. This paper review the changes in epidemiology of bat rabies and arbovirus encephalitis.

Viral zoonoses.

Viral zoonoses cause overt disease in humans and other animals or silent infections in animals and overt disease in unnatural hosts such as humans. Often the virus and its animal host have evolved together and learned to live together. Infection may spread freely between the natural host animals and cause no signs of disease, but this balance may be upset by many factors, including stress, changing environmental conditions and mutations in both viruses and hosts. Infection of an unnatural host may cause clinical disease but no further spread of the virus. Examples of viral zoonoses both old an

New emerging viral zoonoses.

New developments in the field of viral transmission from animal to man can be divided into four areas of study. First are the new viral zoonoses such as diseases caused by rotaviruses, Lassa virus and the animal orthopox viruses which will be more prevalent after the cessation of mandatory vaccination against smallpox. Secondly are the numerous ubiquitous viruses, such as adeno and herpesviruses, which in healthy animals lead only to clinically inapparent infections. A typical example of the third area is the recombination and hybridisation between animal and human influenza type A viruses. Th

[Emerging viral zoonoses: hantavirus infections].

Hantaviruses are rodent-borne agents belonging to the Bunyaviridae family. These viruses, which are found throughout Europe, Asia and the Americas, are maintained by different species of rodents, in which they produce chronic, inapparent infections. Humans become infected through contact with urine, saliva or faeces from infected rodents, mainly via the aerosol route. In humans, clinical disease occurs in the form of two major syndromes: haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) or hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome mainly occurs in Europe and Asia

[Emergence of "new" viral zoonoses].

In the last two to three decades a significant increase of viral zoonotic infections was observed. These zoonoses are not only newly (or previously unrecognized) emerging diseases, but also due to the reappearance of diseases thought to have been defeated (re-emerging diseases). "New" viral diseases can arise when viruses broaden their host-range (monkey poxvirus; equine morbillivirus), or can be a consequence of intrinsic properties of the virus itself, such as high mutation rates (influenza A virus). Most new or reemerging viral zoonoses are due to infections with hemorrhagic viruses. Many o

[Viral, fungal and parasitic dermato-zoonoses].

The transmission of bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic agents from vertebrate animals to humans constitutes a group of diseases called zoonoses. The frequency of these zoonoses is increasing, and new zoonoses are emerging due to travel, factory farming, biodiversity loss, climate change, and deforestation. These diseases have a significant impact on public health, both human and animal, as well as on food, environmental management and the economy. This second article reviews the viral, fungal, and parasitic zoonoses with cutaneous manifestations, known as dermato-zoonoses.

Natural foci of some viral zoonoses in Croatia.

Results of several-year investigations into the epidemiology and virology of viral zoonoses with natural foci occurring in Croatia, with special reference to tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), are presented. The etiologic diagnosis of these diseases was made on the basis of virus isolation from patient blood and/or findings of specific antibodies in the serum. Several TBE and Bhanja virus strains were isolated from different species of ticks, and Calovo virus from mosquitoes, while the presence of Hantaan virus antigen was determined in the lungs of

Emerging Rodent-Borne Viral Zoonoses in Trento, Italy.

Rodent-borne hanta- and arenaviruses are an emerging public health threat in Europe; however, their circulation in human populations is usually underestimated since most infections are asymptomatic. Compared to other European countries, Italy is considered 'low risk' for these viruses, yet in the Province of Trento, two pathogenic hantaviruses (Puumala and Dobrava-Belgrade virus) and one arenavirus (Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis Virus) are known to circulate in rodent reservoirs. In this paper, we performed a follow-up serological screening in humans to detect variation in the prevalence of the

[Some viral zoonoses transmitted by pets (author's transl)].

Besides dogs and cats, various other animals are more or less popular as pets in the Netherlands. It is importance to the veterinary practitioner to know which diseases may be transmitted to man by these animals. Of the viral zoonoses. rabies constitutes a menace to man, in which dogs and, to a less extent, cats supply a link between man and free-living wild animals. Another viral zoonosis in which interest was centered in recent years, is lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) caused by a virus which often is latent in mice but which may also be detected in young hamsters. A human disease caused

[Viral zoonoses in Germany: a One Health perspective].

The COVID-19 pandemic and the increasing occurrence of monkeypox (mpox) diseases outside Africa have illustrated the vulnerability of populations to zoonotic pathogens. In addition, other viral zoonotic pathogens have gained importance in recent years. This review article addresses six notifiable viral zoonotic pathogens as examples to highlight the need for the One Health approach in order to understand the epidemiology of the diseases and to derive recommendations for action by the public health service. The importance of environmental factors, reservoirs, and vectors is emphasized, the disea

An Insight into Nanomedicinal Approaches to Combat Viral Zoonoses.

BACKGROUND: Emerging viral zoonotic diseases are one of the major obstacles to secure the "One Health" concept under the current scenario. Current prophylactic, diagnostic and therapeutic approaches often associated with certain limitations and thus proved to be insufficient for customizing rapid and efficient combating strategy against the highly transmissible pathogenic infectious agents leading to the disastrous socio-economic outcome. Moreover, most of the viral zoonoses originate from the wildlife and poor knowledge about the global virome database renders it difficult to predict future o

Serologic study of pig-associated viral zoonoses in Laos.

We conducted a serologic survey of four high-priority pig-associated viral zoonoses, Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), hepatitis E virus (HEV), Nipah virus (NiV), and swine influenza virus (SIV), in Laos. We collected blood from pigs at slaughter during May 2008-January 2009 in four northern provinces. Japanese encephalitis virus hemagglutination inhibition seroprevalence was 74.7% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 71.5-77.9%), JEV IgM seroprevalence was 2.3% (95% CI = 1.2-3.2%), and HEV seroprevalence was 21.1% (95% CI = 18.1-24.0%). Antibodies to SIV were detected in 1.8% (95% CI = 0.8-2.8%)

Viral zoonoses assessment in invasive rodent species from São Tomé and Príncipe.

Zoonoses are diseases transmitted from animals to humans, highlighting the inseparable link between animal and human health. They are responsible for approximately 2.4 billion cases of illness and 2.2 million deaths annually, posing a significant challenge to public health and food security. Transmission of infectious agents from animals to humans occurs through direct contact, ingestion, inhalation, or inoculation of the infectious agent. Finding practical ways to monitor the presence and/or abundance of zoonotic pathogens is important to estimate the risk of spillover to humans. Since rodent

Emerging Viral Zoonoses: Epidemiology, Vaccination Strategies, and Implications for Global Public Health.

Background/Objectives: Emerging viral zoonoses represent a growing threat to global public health, with most newly emerging infectious diseases originating from animal reservoirs. Recent outbreaks of monkeypox, Ebola virus disease, Marburg virus disease, Rift Valley fever, and avian influenza highlight the capacity of zoonotic viruses to cross species barriers, spread internationally, and generate substantial health, social, and economic consequences. This review examines the ecological, epidemiological, and biological determinants of viral zoonotic emergence and transmission, with particular
