The production of mannosidase activity by all currently recognized species of human viridans group streptococci was determined using an assay in which bacterial growth was dependent on the degradation of the high-mannose-type glycans of RNase B and subsequent utilization of released mannose. RNase B is an excellent substrate for the demonstration of mannosidase activity since it is a glycoprotein with a single glycosylation site which is occupied by high-mannose-type glycoforms containing five to nine mannose residues. Seven patients are reported with meningitis due to viridans streptococci. These patients represented 5% of culture-proven cases of bacterial meningitis in adults participating in a prospective multicentre clinical trial evaluating the use of dexamethasone. Meningitis was iatrogenic in three patients: one patient had been treated with endoscopic sclerotherapy for oesophageal varices, and two patients had undergone thermocoagulation of the gasserian ganglion for trigeminal neuralgia in the previous days.

The aim of this review is to present an update on the susceptibility of viridans group streptococci (VGS) to β-lactam antimicrobials, with emphasis on the Argentinean scenario. VGS are a heterogeneous group including five groups of species, each one exhibiting peculiar susceptibility patterns to penicillin (PEN). Viridans group streptococci (VGS) are gram-positive microorganisms that can form alpha-hemolytic colonies on sheep blood agar. Viridans streptococci have long been considered, with the exception of the ability to cause endocarditis, as minor pathogenic agents. More recently, however, these bacteria have become a major concern in neutropenic patients undergoing a chemotherapeutic treatment. BACKGROUND: Viridans group streptococci (VGS) are both commensal microbes and potential pathogens. Increasing resistance to penicillin in VGS is an ongoing issue in the clinical environment. We investigated the difference in susceptibility and resistance to penicillin among various VGS species.

Viridans group streptococci (VGS) are a common cause of infective endocarditis, and dental plaque is the major source of these bacteria. The present study examined the antibiotic resistance of 635 VGS isolates obtained from dental plaques. Three cases of spondylodiscitis caused by viridans streptococci were observed within the course of 1 month. Although streptococci have been reported as the third most frequent cause of spondylodiscitis after staphylococci and gram-negative bacteria, alpha-haemolytic streptococci are rarely seen. A 34-year-old man came to this Emergency Room because of fever, swelling and pain in the right thigh. Tetralogy of Fallot with bicuspid pulmonary valve was diagnosed after serial examination, and computed tomography of the right thigh revealed pyogenic myositis. Surgical drainage of the right thigh abscess and a further pus culture yielded viridans streptococci. There has been no record in the medical literature of a pyogenic myositis caused by viridans streptococci in an adult tetralogy of Fallot. This is thus the first case reported.

This is a review of the symptoms and signs of children with malignant diseases and septicemia due to viridans streptococci, treated during a 6-year-period (1990-1995) in the Departments of Pediatrics or Pediatric Surgery, University of Leipzig. This study assessed the microbiology, clinical syndromes, and outcomes of oncologic patients with viridans group streptococci isolated from blood cultures between January 1st, 2013 and December 31st, 2016 in a referral hospital in Mexico using the Bruker MALDI Biotyper. Salivary samples were taken annually in October from 48 dental students as they progressed from pre-clinical studies to final year. The MICs of penicillin for the viridans streptococci were determined. Over the three years these organisms became progressively more resistant but not to a level of clinical significance.
