In man streptococcal septicaemia is most often associated with the streptococci of Lancefield's groups, A, B and D, with pneumococci, with Streptococcus milleri and with viridans streptococci. The specific determinants of the ability of streptococci to establish infection and to invade the blood stream are only partially understood. Even if fully comprehended, they would provide an incomplete picture of the factors responsible for the capacity of streptococci to produce a myriad of disease states the clinical expression of which include such diverse manifestations as acute sore throat, impetig

Sporothrix schenckii is one of the etiological agents of sporotrichosis. In this review, we discuss the virulence factors that have been proven to participate in the S. schenckii-host interaction. Among these known factors, we can find cell wall glycoproteins, adhesins, melanin, extracellular vesicles, and dimorphism. Furthermore, the morphological transition of S. schenckii in response to environmental conditions such as pH and temperature represents a means by which the fungus is able to establish mycosis in mammals. One of the key features in the development of sporotrichosis is the adhesio

A. actinomycetemcomitans has clearly adapted well to its environs; its armamentarium of virulence factors (Table 2) ensures its survival in the oral cavity and enables it to promote disease. Factors that promote A. actinomycetemcomitans colonization and persistence in the oral cavity include adhesins, bacteriocins, invasins and antibiotic resistance. It can interact with and adhere to all components of the oral cavity (the tooth surface, other oral bacteria, epithelial cells or the extracellular matrix). The adherence is mediated by a number of distinct adhesins that are elements of the cell s

A panoramic view of the amebiasis concept, its pathogenesis and its epidemiologic importance is presented. Besides, a brief description of the characteristic lesions of the mainly affected organs is done. Then it is proposed a sequential relationship must occur in the amebic lesion production. Finally, the best characterized amoebal infective factors are analyzed. This paper does not pretend to be an exhaustive review, but to offer an image of the pathogenetic mechanisms of amebiasis.

Fungal diseases are severe and have very high morbidity as well as up to 60% mortality for patients diagnosed with invasive fungal infection. In this review, in vitro and in vivo studies provided us with the insight into the role of Candida virulence factors that mediate their success as pathogens, such as: membrane and cell wall (CW) barriers, dimorphism, biofilm formation, signal transduction pathway, proteins related to stress tolerance, hydrolytic enzymes (e.g. proteases, lipases, haemolysins), and toxin production. The review characterized the virulence of clinically important C. albicans

Cryptococcus neoformans is an encapsulated yeast which causes cryptococcosis, a disease typified by an initial pulmonary infection which can disseminate to cause a life threatening meningoencephalitis. Although the disease may occur in individuals who show no evidence of immunosuppression it has had it most significant impact as an infection in patients with AIDS. Research into the potential virulence factors of this yeast has recently attracted particular attention. Capsule synthesis has been the focus of most interest and it is now established as a major virulence determinant. The mechanisms

Cryptococcosis is a serious fungal disease in patients with AIDS or other defects in T-cell-mediated host defenses. Cryptococcus neoformans produces several virulence factors, most notably the polysaccharide capsule and phenol oxidase. Molecular studies of cryptococcal virulence factors have contributed to our understanding of the pathobiology of this yeast, and will enable the identification of new targets for antifungal therapy.

Helicobacter pylori can be considered a very successful organism effectively colonizing the majority of the world's population. Although various disease states associated with this infection have been described, the mechanisms of pathogenicity remain unknown. The easiest virulence factors to identify are those enabling the organism to colonize the hazardous microenvironment of the gastric epithelium, survive at this site, and multiply sufficiently for transmission to a new host. The factors identified to date include the bacterial enzymes urease and catalase, flagella, and lectin-like adhesins

Brucellae are Gram-negative, small rods infecting mammals and capable of causing disease called brucellosis. The infection results in abortion and sterility in domestic animals (sheeps, pigs, rams etc). Especially dangerous for humans are: Brucella melitensis, Brucella suis, Brucella abortus, and Brucella canis that trigger unspecific symptoms (flu-like manifestation). Brucella rods are introduced via host cells, by inhalation, skin abrasions, ingestion or mucosal membranes. The most important feature of Brucella is the ability to survive and multiply within both phagocytic and non-phagocytic

Brucellosis, caused by bacteria of the genus Brucella, is an important zoonotic infection that causes reproductive disease in domestic animals and chronic debilitating disease in humans. An intriguing aspect of Brucella infection is the ability of these bacteria to evade the host immune response, leading to pathogen persistence. Conversely, in the reproductive tract of infected animals, this stealthy pathogen is able to cause an acute severe inflammatory response. In this review, we discuss the different mechanisms used by Brucella to cause disease, with emphasis on its virulence factors and t

Members of the genus Aspergillus are filamentous, ubiquitous fungi found in nature. Aspergillus species can cause clinical settings in man, such as opportunistic infections, allergic states and toxicoses. Immunosuppression is the major factor predisposing to development of opportunistic mycoses. To invade the host, Aspergillus species must be able to adhere to and penetrate the host tissues. Much work has focused on the search for virulence determinants that allow the establishment of the fungus within the host. Adhesins, pigment production, toxic metabolites and extracellular enzymes are thou

The contribution of bacterial proteases to virulence has been relatively understudied. It is a simple matter to argue that bacterial proteases have the potential to destroy the structural and functional proteins that constitute host tissues as well as to destroy proteins important in host defense. Systematically demonstrating that such interactions occur during disease pathogenesis is more difficult, although a few studies have suggested that the ability of a pathogen to use proteases to cross proteinaceous barriers within the host contributes to bacterial virulence. This manuscript reviews co

Campylobacter jejuni is a highly frequent cause of gastrointestinal foodborne disease in humans throughout the world. Disease outcomes vary from mild to severe diarrhea, and in rare cases the Guillain-Barré syndrome or reactive arthritis can develop as a post-infection complication. Transmission to humans usually occurs via the consumption of a range of foods, especially those associated with the consumption of raw or undercooked poultry meat, unpasteurized milk, and water-based environmental sources. When associated to food or water ingestion, the C. jejuni enters the human host intestine via

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Legionella pneumophila is a facultative intracellular pathogen and an important cause of community-acquired and nosocomial pneumonia. This review focuses on the latest literature examining Legionella's virulence strategies and the mammalian host response.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies identify novel virulence strategies used by L. pneumophila and new aspects of the host immune response to this pathogen. Legionella prevents acidification of the phagosome by recruiting Rab1, a host protein. Legionella also blocks a conserved endoplasmic reticulum stress response. To access

Salmonella species can cause diseases ranging in severity from acute gastroenteritis to typhoid fever. These bacteria are considered as intracellular pathogens and produce several products which are required for entry and survival in the intracellular environment, in addition to factors necessary for existence in the gastrointestinal tract and the outside environment. The virulence factors used by these bacteria to cause these diseases are complex, and only recently have we begun to characterize these factors and determine the contribution they make to Salmonella virulence.

Candida albicans infections present a heavy burden upon public health, with only a few drugs available, while biofilms formed by C. albicans worsen this situation. Dioscin has antitumor, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective effects, and this study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dioscin on the biofilm formation and development, as well as other virulence factors of C. albicans such as morphological transition, adhesion, and extracellular secreted phospholipase. Our results showed dioscin inhibits these virulence factors and has low cytotoxicity against mammalian cells. Considering

Aspergillus fumigatus is the predominant fungal pathogen responsible for life-threatening systemic infections in humans. Recently developed high-throughput whole genome sequencing (WGS) and RNA-Seq technologies have proven to be powerful tools for systematically investigating pathogenic organisms. In this review, we present new virulence factors obtained through our "omics" researches on A. fumigatus. We first sequenced genomes of A. fumigatus stains isolated from one infected patient at different time points, and made an important finding that although the genome (microsatellites) type of the
