Antioxidant activity of Viscum album ssp. album.

Methanolic extracts of Viscum album ssp. album (mistletoe) grown on different host trees were investigated for their potential antioxidant activity. Scavenging activity was tested by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method and the inhibitory effect on lipid peroxidation was examined by ferric thiocyanate and thiobarbituric acid methods. The extract from mistletoe grown on lime tree in summer showed the highest activity. It was found that antioxidant capacity of the plant differed according to the harvesting time as well as the host tree.

Parasitic Mistletoes of the Genera Scurrula and Viscum: From Bench to Bedside.

The mistletoes, stem hemiparasites of Asia and Europe, have been used as medicinal herbs for many years and possess sophisticated systems to obtain nutrients from their host plants. Although knowledge about ethnomedicinal uses of mistletoes is prevalent in Asia, systematic scientific study of these plants is still lacking, unlike its European counterparts. This review aims to evaluate the literature on Scurrula and Viscum mistletoes. Both mistletoes were found to have anticancer, antimicrobial, antioxidant and antihypertensive properties. Plants from the genus Scurrula were found to inhibit ca

Insulin-secreting activity of the traditional antidiabetic plant Viscum album (mistletoe).

Viscum album (mistletoe) has been documented as a traditional treatment of diabetes. In acute 20-min tests, 1-10 mg/ml aqueous extract of mistletoe evoked a stepwise 1.1- to 12.2-fold stimulation of insulin secretion from clonal pancreatic B-cells. This effect was abolished by 0.5 mM diazoxide and prior exposure to extract did not alter subsequent stimulation of insulin secretion induced by 10 mM L-alanine, thereby negating a detrimental effect on cell viability. The insulin-releasing effect of mistletoe extract was unaltered by 16.7 mM glucose, l-alanine (10 mM), 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (

MISTOSUS: a phase II trial of Viscum album extract adjuvant therapy for relapsed resectable osteosarcoma.

Relapsed resectable osteosarcoma carries a dismal prognosis of 30% 12-month post-relapse event-free survival (PREFS-12). Surgery remains the primary therapy for metastatic pulmonary osteosarcoma with the role for adjuvant therapy still undefined. There is an urgent need for effective nontoxic adjuvant therapies to improve PREFS following complete resection of metastases. Viscum album extract (Iscador® P, Iscador AG, Arlesheim, Switzerland) is a fermented aqueous extract manufactured from the leaves, stems, and berries of the white-berried hemiparasitic plant from the European mistletoe (Viscum
