The vision screening program has a long and interesting history involving educators, pediatricians, optometrists, and ophthalmologists. Since, the earliest screening program initiated in 1899, many alterations in the original program have resulted from consideration of test reliability, testing conditions, and child maturity. Indeed, even the basic concept of vision screening had to be proven beneficial before it was widely accepted. The three basic areas of the exam - visual acuity, hyperopia, and heterophoria - developed independently into a concise, thorough screening system. Minor controve

A recent systematic review found that between 20% and 50% of older people in the UK have undetected reduced vision and in most cases this is caused by refractive error or cataracts, and is correctable. Two approaches to improve the detection of these problems are to better publicise optometric services and to carry out community-based vision screening of older people. Screening programmes should pass the Wilson criteria and a consideration of these highlights three inter-related questions: 'Is vision screening effective at detecting correctable low vision in older people?'; 'Which tests should

IMPORTANCE: Accurate assessment of uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) is fundamental to pediatric vision screening. Although the HOTV letter-matching test is recommended for pediatric vision screening, the tumbling E test remains widely used globally despite its higher cognitive demands for young children. Evidence directly comparing UCVA outcomes between the 2 tests across pediatric age groups is limited.
OBJECTIVE: To compare UCVA outcomes from HOTV and tumbling E vision tests and evaluate their suitability for pediatric vision screening.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this cross-sect

Early detection of congenital color vision defects is desirable, but school screening studies have been stymied by lack of a suitable test. We evaluated a new color vision test, the APT-5, for use by volunteer screeners in schools and preschools. The screeners tested 1794 children, ages 3 to 13 years, and found the APT-5 easy to use with young children ages 5 years and up. Children who failed the screening were recruited for diagnostic color vision testing; for the children ages 5 to 13 years, 56% of those who failed the screening were successfully recruited. Data analysis indicated that the f

PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence of visual "defects" among a sample of young schoolchildren and evaluate a new system for vision screening in schools.
METHODS: A new system for vision screening in schools has been developed. The system is based on a computer program which may be run on a low specification personal computer. Information about the child's symptoms, history and family history is acquired by means of a parental questionnaire and entered into the program prior to the vision screening. Distance visual acuity and stereopsis are measured directly on the computer screen and colour

The aim of children's vision screenings is to detect visual problems that are common in this age category through valid and reliable tests. Nevertheless, the cost effectiveness of paediatric vision screenings, the nature of the tests included in the screening batteries and the ideal screening age has been the cause of much debate in Australia and worldwide. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to report on the current practice of children's vision screenings in Australia and other countries, as well as to evaluate the evidence for and against the provision of such screenings. This was unde

Optic neuritis (ON) is a common and important cause of vision loss or vision disturbances in the community, particularly amongst the young, and it is often associated with a persistent dyschromatopsia. Traditionally screening for dyschromatopsia has been carried out using pseudo-isochromatic Ishihara plates. These colour plates were originally developed for testing of colour blindness, and indeed have only more recently been applied to ON. As the Ishihara plate books used for testing are expensive, unwieldy, and are not commonly available in many clinics or wards, many neurologists and ophthal

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of visual impairment and ocular abnormalities among schoolchildren in Chiang Mai.
DESIGN: A community-based survey.
SUBJECTS AND METHOD: The vision screening project was conducted from June 2000 to March 2002. Students in grade I in the Chiang Mai municipal area were examined for visual acuity (VA), color vision, ocular alignment, anterior segment and fundus. Subjective refraction was done in students with subnormal vision (VA 20/30 or less). Referral to the hospital for further evaluation and treatment was made for students with strabismus, amblyopia and

BACKGROUND: Identifying bradykinesia is crucial for diagnosing Parkinson's disease (PD). Traditionally, the finger-tapping test has been used, relying on subjective assessments by physicians. Computer vision offers a non-contact and cost-effective alternative for assessing Parkinson's disease.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to detect Parkinson's disease by identifying bradykinesia using computer vision in the finger-tapping test and applying machine learning techniques for both hands.
METHODS: We recruited 100 patients with PD and healthy controls. Four neurologists assessed bradykinesia, and 1

Significant advancements in vision screening research are leading to improved design, functionality, and reliability of screening tools. Presently, two vision screening approaches are available to school nurses for children ages 3 years and older: optotype-based screening and instrument-based screening. Optotype-based screening pertains to tests of visual acuity using optotypes (e.g., pictures, letters, and numbers), which children identify to determine visual acuity. Instrument-based screening pertains to automated devices that measure amblyogenic risk factors, such as refractive error, media

PURPOSE: To compare the vision needs of children wearing and not wearing eyeglasses who failed school-based vision screening.
METHODS: Students aged 4 to 16 years in 41 Baltimore City schools were screened using distance visual acuity (VA) and photoscreening. Students failing screening underwent school-based non-cycloplegic examination. We compared students who were wearing eyeglasses at failed screening with those not wearing eyeglasses with respect to age, sex, right-eye refractive error, right-eye presenting, and best-corrected VA (BCVA).
RESULTS: A total of 2176 students failed screening

Vision screening during childhood is vital for the early detection and treatment of visual impairment that may significantly impact a child's development and quality of life. This nationwide cross-sectional study used data from Greenland's national electronic medical records, including 2,493 six-year-old children from July 2017 to July 2023, to evaluate the coverage rate of vision screening and the prevalence of low vision in Greenlandic schoolchildren. The participation rate in vision screening increased from 43% in 2017 to 61% in 2022, while referral rates to ophthalmologists decreased from

In light of the international literature, a workgroup of experts from the AFSOP met in February 2019 to formulate updated recommendations for visual screening in children. An ophthalmologic examination during the first month of life is recommended for children at risk of developing infantile organic amblyopia. An ophthalmologic examination including cycloplegic refraction between 12 and 15 months of age is recommended for children at risk of developing functional amblyopia. At any age, a prompt ophthalmologic examination is recommended for a child suspected of functional or organic ocular path
