Establishment of a Visual Analog Scale for DBS Programming (VISUAL-STIM Trial).

Background: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has become a standard treatment for advanced stages of Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, and dystonia. In addition to the correct surgical device implantation, effective programming is regarded to be the most important factor for clinical outcome. Despite established strategies for adjusting neurostimulation, DBS programming remains time- and resource-consuming. Although kinematic and neuronal biosignals have recently been examined as potential feedback for closed-loop DBS (CL-DBS), there is an ongoing need for programming strategies to adapt the s

Validation of the visual analog scale in the cervical spine.

OBJECTIVE The visual analog scale (VAS) is frequently used to measure treatment outcome in patients with cervical spine disorders. The minimum clinically important difference (MCID) is the smallest change in a score that has clinical importance to the patient. Although it has been established for other medical fields, knowledge of the VAS MCID for the cervical spine is sparse, and it has rarely been considered in relation to measurement noise. The goals in this study were as follows: 1) to validate the VAS-neck and VAS-arm instruments for the cervical spine (e.g., repeatability); 2) to investi

Measures of Subjective Tinnitus: What Does Visual Analog Scale Stand for?

BACKGROUND: Patients with tinnitus may have different severity levels of tinnitus distress. Visual analog scale (VAS) is a simple method to measure the extent of subjective distress caused by tinnitus. It includes ratings of tinnitus loudness, awareness, annoyance, and impact of tinnitus on life. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate what led to different distress levels in patients with bilateral tinnitus by analyzing the relationships among all subscales of VAS scores for tinnitus distress and the documented variables. RESEARCH DESIGN: This study was a retrospective cohort stu

Maximum pain on visual analog scales in spinal disorders.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Determining pain intensity is largely dependent on the patient's report. PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that patients initially reporting a pain score of 10 out of 10 on the visual analog scale (VAS) would experience symptom improvement to a degree similar to patients reporting milder pain. STUDY DESIGN: This study is a retrospective chart review. PATIENT SAMPLE: A total of 6,779 patients seeking care for spinal disorders were included in the study. OUTCOME MEASURES: The outcome measures used in the study were pain scores on the VAS pain

Psychometric evaluation of a visual analog scale for the assessment of anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Fast-acting medications for the management of anxiety are important to patients and society. Measuring early onset, however, requires a sensitive and clinically responsive tool. This study evaluates the psychometric properties of a patient-reported Global Anxiety-Visual Analog Scale (GA-VAS). METHODS: Data from a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study of lorazepam and paroxetine in patients with Generalized Anxiety Disorder were analyzed to assess the reliability, validity, responsiveness, and utility of the GA-VAS. The GA-VAS was completed at clinic visits and at home

A visual analog scale for patient-reported voice outcomes: The VAS voice.

OBJECTIVES: Although patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) can be useful for assessing quality of life, they can be complex and cognitively burdensome. In this study, we prospectively evaluated a simple patient-reported voice assessment measure on a visual analog scale (VAS voice) and compared it with the Voice Handicap Index (VHI-10). STUDY DESIGN: Prospective survey. METHODS: An abbreviated voice measure was designed by a team of otolaryngologists, speech pathologists, and patients that consisted of four VAS questions related to (a) a global question of voice disturbance, (b) physical

The million visual analog scale: its utility for predicting tertiary rehabilitation outcomes.

STUDY DESIGN: A longitudinal cohort study involving 1749 patients with chronically disabling spine disorder (CDSD) who underwent tertiary rehabilitation investigated the relation between the Million Visual Analog Scale (MVAS) score and treatment outcome. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the pretreatment MVAS rating of disability severity is associated with the ability to complete functional restoration rehabilitation, and to determine whether pre- or posttreatment MVAS disability perception is associated with 1-year posttreatment socioeconomic outcomes. The relation of the MVAS to pre- and po

Comparing the Visual Analog Scale and the Numerical Rating Scale in Patient-reported Outcomes in Psoriatic Arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Patient self-report scales are invaluable in psoriatic arthritis (PsA), as they allow physicians to rapidly assess patient perspectives of disease activity. We aimed to assess the agreement of the visual analog scale (VAS), a 100-mm horizontal line, and the numerical rating scale (NRS), a 21-point scale ranging from 0 to 10 in increments of 0.5, in patients with PsA. METHODS: Data were collected prospectively across 3 UK hospital trusts from 2018 to 2019. All patients completed the VAS and NRS for pain, arthritis, skin psoriasis (PsO), and global disease activity. A subset complete

The Effect of Visual Sort and Rate Versus Visual Analog Scales on the Reliability of Judgments of Dysphonia.

Purpose The reliability of auditory-perceptual judgments between listeners is a long-standing problem in the assessment of voice disorders. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a relatively novel experimental scaling method, called visual sort and rate (VSR), yielded stronger reliability than the more frequently used method of visual analog scales (VAS) for ratings of overall severity (OS) and breathiness (BR) in speakers with voicedisorders. Method Fifty speech samples were selected from a database of speakers with voice disorders. Twenty-two inexperienced listeners provided rat

Objective Visual Analog Scale for Biopsy Diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori Infection in Clinical Practice.

Historic and current pathology society guidelines recommend using visual gestalt to identify substantial inflammatory cell infiltrate in Helicobacter pylori gastritis, but these scales were subjectively designed. This study aims to objectively investigate the density of inflammation that justifies additional workup for H. pylori infection. We retrospectively identified 2 patient cohorts who had undergone endoscopy with gastric biopsies; 1 with H. pylori infection (n=66), confirmed with a positive stool antigen test and/or Campylobacter-like organism test, and 1 without infection (n=81). Is the reliability of a visual analog scale higher than an ordinal scale? An experiment with the GRBAS scale for the perceptual evaluation of dysphonia.

Perceptual evaluation of 14 pathological voices was performed by 29 listeners using the GRBAS scale. To evaluate scale effects on the judgments, 2 versions of the scale were presented: the original 4-point scale and a visual analog scale. Each listener used the same voice samples for both versions of the scale with an interval of 2 weeks. Agreement was found to be higher with the original 4-point scale than with the visual analog version for all scale items G, R, B, A and S. Although a visual analog scale seems to enable a finer judgment of voice quality, this study showed that, with increased

Stability of opioid craving over time as measured by visual analog scales.

Sixteen methadone maintenance patients reported their 24-h peak opioid craving on a visual analog scale and the time of day at which the peak craving occurred on weekdays over a 4-week period. Both intersubject and intrasubject craving scores were highly variable. Craving scores did not correlate highly with time since the previous dose, mean methadone dose, requests for changes in maintenance dose, or occurrence of positive urine-drug screens. These data suggest that 24-h craving recall (as measured by visual analog scales) varies over time and is not closely correlated with changes in methad

Performance of response scales of activity and functional measures of ankylosing spondylitis: numerical rating scale versus visual analog scale.

The aim of this study was to compare the performance characteristics of two answer modalities for BASDAI and BASFI in patients with AS and to show validity and reliability of NRS in Turkish version. BASDAI and BASFI were simultaneously employed with a 10-cm VAS and an 11-point NRS. Internal consistency was assessed by using Cronbach's alpha coefficients. Testing was performed on baseline and next day under standardized conditions. Construct validity was determined by association of these measures with ASDAS, DFI, global disease activity, pain scores, ASQOL, HAQ, and SF-36. We also tested the a

Establishing the minimal important difference of the visual analog scale for assessing exercise-induced fatigue.

BACKGROUND: Exercise-induced fatigue is a physiological state characterized by performance decline. The Visual Analog Scale (VAS) is one of the most commonly used subjective methods for evaluating exercise-induced fatigue. However, there is a limited interpretation of how much a change in this method indicates a fatigue status that matters to the exercise performance due to the lack of a well-established minimal important difference (MID). METHODS: This study is a secondary analysis of data from three trials. We analyzed individual participant data before and after exercise-induced fatigue. A
