OCTAVie: Open-source Capture Technology for Animal Vocalization in ultrasonic range.

Ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) in rodents are a key tool in neuroscience for investigating emotion, social behavior, and disease models. However, commercial recording systems remain expensive and generate massive datasets that require heavy post-processing. We present an open-hardware acquisition chain-from microphone to computer-designed to compute and display sonograms in near real time, thus reducing both storage needs and analysis workload. The system integrates (i) a custom ultrasonic microphone capable of detecting signals up to 100 kHz, (ii) a dedicated analog front-end with band-pass

Acoustic startle induced ultrasonic vocalization in the rat: a novel animal model of anxiety?

Ultrasonic vocalization was induced by either high intensity acoustic stimuli or by electric footshock in the rat. High intensity acoustic stimuli elicit a startle response, while electric footshocks provoke an immediate withdrawal of the feet often accompanied by a pain reaction. Flunitrazepam (0.5 mg/kg), diazepam (5 mg/kg), and ipsapirone (5 mg/kg) reduced the vocalization induced by both averse stimuli. Maprotiline (10-25 mg/kg) enhanced the vocalization. FG 7142 (10 mg/kg) had no effect. The acoustic startle-induced vocalization paradigm like the electric footshock-induced vocalization pa

Exploring nonlinear phenomena in animal vocalizations through oscillator theory.

Animal vocalizations comprise a rich array of complex sounds that exhibit nonlinear phenomena (NLP), which have fascinated researchers for decades. From the melodic songs of birds to the clicks and whistles of dolphins, many species have been found to produce nonlinear vocalizations, offering a valuable perspective on the mechanisms underlying sound production and potential adaptive functions. By leveraging on the principles of oscillator theory and nonlinear dynamics, animal vocalizations, which are based on coupled oscillators, can be described and conveniently classified. We review the basi

Where's Whaledo: A software toolkit for array localization of animal vocalizations.

Where's Whaledo is a software toolkit that uses a combination of automated processes and user interfaces to greatly accelerate the process of reconstructing animal tracks from arrays of passive acoustic recording devices. Passive acoustic localization is a non-invasive yet powerful way to contribute to species conservation. By tracking animals through their acoustic signals, important information on diving patterns, movement behavior, habitat use, and feeding dynamics can be obtained. This method is useful for helping to understand habitat use, observe behavioral responses to noise, and develo

A new approach to geometrical measurements in an animal model of vocal fold scar.

A standard method for quantifying the geometric properties of vocal folds has not been widely adopted. An ideal method of geometrical measurement should effectively quantify the dimensions of the medial vibratory portion of the vocal fold, should be easily performed, should yield consistent results, and should be readily available at little to no cost. We have developed a new approach for geometrical measurements to meet these goals. The objective of this study is to describe this new approach and to assess its effectiveness in a canine model of vocal fold scar. One hundred thirty-five mid-mem

Asymmetric Vibration Animal Phonation Model with A Reconstructive Curved and Medialized Titanium Implant Vocal Fold to Repair Defective Vocal Fold.

OBJECTIVE: Asymmetric vocal fold vibration caused by unilateral biomechanical alteration is common in laryngeal disorders and presents a challenge for functional reconstruction. This study aimed to investigate phonatory and vibratory outcomes in asymmetric glottic configurations reconstructed with materials of different stiffness. METHODS: Two asymmetric curved-surface (CS) vocal fold models were developed. A silicone-based single-layer model (Si-CS) and a titanium-based bi-layer model (Ti-CS) were constructed and compared with symmetric controls. Twenty-four excised canine larynges were used

Inspiratory activation of the vocal cord adductor, part II: Animal study in the cat.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The authors have shown previously that the vocal cord adductor is activated during inspiration in patients with vocal cord abduction impairment and that this adductor inspiratory activity is abolished by relief from inspiratory tracheal negative pressure by opening the tracheostoma. (Shiba K. Isono S, Sekita Y, Tanaka A. Inspiratory activation of the vocal cord adductor, Part I: human study in patients with restricted abduction of the vocal cords. Laryngoscope 2004;114:372-375). Validation of ultrasound as a diagnostic tool to assess vocal cord motion in an animal feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Post-thyroidectomy dysphonia can result from recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury. Confirmation of postoperative recurrent nerve function has prompted many surgeons to advocate laryngoscopic examination. Indirect and flexible laryngoscopy permit visualization of vocal cord motion, but not all thyroid surgeons are skilled in these techniques. Indirect laryngoscopy has a significant failure rate due to gag reflexes or anatomical obstruction. Flexible fiberoptic laryngoscopy, the current gold standard, allows reliable visualization of the cords, but perioperative examination is not

A multi-stage ensemble framework for classifying pig vocalizations under noisy animal farm environments.

Pig vocalizations are important indicators of health and emotional state, offering significant potential for advancing precision livestock farming. Accurate recognition of these vocalization patterns requires robust noise filtering and effective feature extraction. However, existing studies often focus on isolated patterns such as coughs, limiting their practical applicability in real-world settings. This study introduces the Pig Vocalization Multi-stage Classification (PVMC) model, a comprehensive framework designed to detect and classify a wide range of pig vocalizations under diverse farm c

Andrographolide blocks 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations, hyperlocomotion and oxidative stress in an animal model of mania.

In rats, lisdexamfetamine (LDX) induces manic-like behaviors such as hyperlocomotion and increases in appetitive 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations (USV), which are prevented by antimanic drugs, such as lithium. Inhibition of glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (GSK3β) and antioxidant activity have been associated with antimanic effects. Thus, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the possible antimanic-like effects of andrographolide (ANDRO), a GSK3β inhibitor, on LDX-induced hyperlocomotion and 50-kHz USV increases. In addition, the effect of ANDRO was studied on LDX-induced oxidative stress

Female- and Intruder-induced Ultrasonic Vocalizations in C57BL/6J Mice as Proxy Indicators for Animal Wellbeing.

Female urine-induced male mice ultrasonic vocalizations (FiUSV) are ultrasonic vocalizations produced by adult male mice after presentation of adult female urine, whereas intruder-induced ultrasonic vocalizations (IiUSV) are produced by resident adult female mice when interacting with an intruder female mouse. These affiliative behaviors may be reduced when mice have decreased wellbeing or are in pain and distress. To determine whether FiUSV and IiUSV can be used as proxy indicators of animal wellbeing, we assessed FiUSV produced by male C57BL/6J mice in response to female urine and IiUSV prod

Evaluation of 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations in animal models of mania: Ketamine and lisdexamfetamine-induced hyperlocomotion in rats.

Drug-induced hyperlocomotion in rodents is frequently used as a behavioral model for mania. However, the use of locomotor activity as the single parameter in these animal models of mania may pose some limitations for developing new pharmacological treatments. Thus, alternative behavioral markers are required. Fifty-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations (USV), which are thought to represent positive affect, are increased by the administration of the psychostimulant d-amphetamine, an effect that can be prevented by lithium treatment, the gold standard antimanic drug for treating bipolar disorder. The aim

Long-term stimulation by implanted pacemaker enables non-atrophic treatment of bilateral vocal fold paresis in a human-like animal model.

A wide variety of treatments have been developed to improve respiratory function and quality of life in patients with bilateral vocal fold paresis (BVFP). One experimental method is the electrical activation of the posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscle with a laryngeal pacemaker (LP) to open the vocal folds. We used an ovine (sheep) model of unilateral VFP to study the long-term effects of functional electrical stimulation on the PCA muscles. The left recurrent laryngeal nerve was cryo-damaged in all animals and an LP was implanted except for the controls. After a reinnervation phase of six mo
