This article discusses the differences between children's voices and adult voices. We give an overview of the anatomy in the head and neck and specifically the anatomy of the respiratory system and the larynx. We also describe the development of children's voices including different physiological measures and voice quality. The development and consequences for voice production and voice quality are addressed and related to gender differences in the growing child. We also discuss the prevalence of voice problems and hoarseness in children. Environmental and other factors contributing to voice p

OBJECTIVES: Interoception may play a role in how individuals perceive their voice disorder. The first objective of this study was to investigate relationships between interoception and voice disorder class (functional, structural, neurological). The second objective was to determine relationships between interoception and voice-related outcome measures between patients with functional voice and upper airway disorders and typical voice users. The third objective was to determine whether patients with primary muscle tension dysphonia (a type of functional voice disorder) had different levels of

OBJECTIVES: To determine the efficacy of voice therapy techniques in 37 patients with functional dysphonia.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The patients were divided into three groups according to the type of functional voice disorder, including mutational falsetto (n=16), vocal nodule (n=17), and muscle-tension dysphonia (n=4). All the patients received voice therapy which varied according to the frequency of visits, time, and techniques for the type of functional voice disorder. Voices of the patients were evaluated subjectively by a questionnaire and the GRBAS scale, and objectively by videolaryngos

Aasthma is one of the most common chronic diseases with a prevalence of 5% in Germany. Nearly half of the patients complain about permanent voice disorders. Mucosal changes due to the obstructive respiratory disease as well as mucus abnormalities and regularly accompanying chronic rhinosinusitis may explain these symptoms. The additional influence of laryngopharyngeal reflux is discussed controversially. Additionally, dysphonia may as well occur due to side effects of the therapy with inhaled corticosteroids: the ingredients as well as physical effects may be responsible for the development of

Pediatric patients with voice or speech problems usually should receive a team assessment in which communication between the pediatrician or primary care physician, the otolaryngologist, and speech pathologist occurs. Although speech or voice problems may prompt an otolaryngologic evaluation, the voice or speech problem simply may be the manifestation or symptom of a larger or more complex disease process. Whether that is the case of hypernasal speech, eventually leading to the diagnosis of velocardiofacial syndrome, or bilateral vocal fold paralysis, eventually leading to the diagnosis of hyd

OBJECTIVE: To determine differences in voice disorders in patients after thyroidectomy, with recurrent laryngeal nerve preservation, divided into 2 groups, those who underwent lobectomy (LO) vs patients who underwent total thyroidectomy (TT).
METHODS: In our prospective study, we compared subjective and objective parameters of voice disorders. Our study included 61 subjects who underwent thyroidectomy (n (LO) = 31, n (TT) = 30) at the Department of ENT and Head and Neck Surgery University Hospital Center Zagreb. The research was conducted at four time points: 1st measurement-7 days before sur

The primary movement disorders affecting the voice are laryngeal dystonia (including spasmodic dysphonia), essential voice tremor, and Parkinson disease. Diagnosis of these conditions is clinical and based on a detailed history, voice evaluation, and physical and laryngoscopic examination. Laryngeal dystonia and essential voice tremor are hyperfunctional disorders and are treated most commonly with botulinum toxin injections. Parkinson disease is a hypofunctional disorder that may affect the voice and most commonly is treated with Lee Silverman Voice Treatment.

This article reviews the management of voice disorders in children. We describe the relevant anatomy and development of the larynx throughout childhood, which affects voice. We consider the epidemiologic data to establish the size of the problem. The assessment of the patient in the clinic is described stepwise through the history, examination, laryngoscopy, and extra tests. We then review the common voice disorders encountered and their management, concluding with discussion of future directions, which may herald advances in this field.

Voice disorders in the pediatric population are relatively common. The education of families, teachers and clinical staff on etiology and treatment of pediatric voice disorders have led to greater attention being paid to hoarseness in childhood and improving early detection of pediatric voice disorders. Pediatric voice problems can have a number of causes. Most commonly, childhood dysphonia is caused by vocal fold nodules due vocal ab- and misuse. Other reasons might be congenital laryngeal dysplasia, vocal fold cysts and laryngeal papilloma. Medical examination is necessary in order to initia

This article reviews the literature on the efficacy of treatment for voice disorders primarily using studies published in peer-reviewed journals. Voice disorders are defined, their frequency of occurrence across the life span is reported, and their impact on the lives of individuals with voice disorders is documented. The goal of voice treatment is to maximize vocal effectiveness given the existing disorder and to reduce the handicapping effect of the voice problem. Voice treatment may be (a) the preferred treatment to resolve the voice disorder when medical (surgical or pharmacological) treat

The pediatric otolaryngologist has an especially important role in the differential diagnosis and treatment of two voice disorders; these are the voice quality problems (dysphony) and the resonance problems (rhinophony). The first step in the examination is to preclude the organic causes. The functional dysphonia is mostly related to voice abuse/misuse, but may be present on a psychosomatic basis; environmental factors can also play a role in the etiology and the personality structure has been found to be very relevant. The perceptual evaluation of voice is of obvious importance. Endoscopy wit

Voice disorders are commonly seen in general medical practice. In some cases voice disorders represent the presenting symptom for serious underlying disease. It is important for clinicians from internal medicine, pediatrics, and family practice to be able to identify those factors in the history or observed vocal symptoms which suggest need for referral for comprehensive voice evaluation as well as to understand the distinct but complementary roles of the specific disciplines (otolaryngology and speech-language pathology) involved in diagnosis and treatment of patients with voice disorders.

Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) with laryngopharyngeal reflux plays a significant role in voice disorders. A significant proportion of patients attending ear, nose, and throat clinics with voice disorders may have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). There is no controlled study of the effect of voice therapy on GERD. We assessed the effect of voice therapy in patients with dysphonia and GERD. Thirty-two patients with dysphonia and GERD underwent indirect laryngoscopy and voice analysis. Esophageal and laryngeal symptoms were assessed using the reflux symptom index (RSI). At endoscopy, esopha

Outcome measurements of voice disorders is an important new area for both the evaluation of voice-disordered patients and evaluation of treatment efficacy. The Voice Handicap Index (VHI) measures the patient's perception of the impact of his or her voice-disorder. The VHI was used in this study to measure the changes of the patient's perception following treatment for four different voice disorders. The VHI showed a significant change following treatment for unilateral vocal fold paralysis, vocal cyst/polyp, and muscle tension dysphonia. Results of this paper indicate that the VHI is a useful

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess the application of Voice Handicap Index (VHI) in the diagnosis of occupational voice disorders in female teachers.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The subjective assessment of voice by VHI was performed in fifty subjects with dysphonia diagnosed in laryngovideostroboscopic examination. The control group comprised 30 women whose jobs did not involve vocal effort.
RESULTS: The results of the total VHI score and each of its subscales: functional, emotional and physical was significantly worse in the study group than in controls (p < 0.001). The analysis of

Vocoder-based speech synthesis has become a promising technique to accommodate the demands of high-quality speech analysis, manipulation, and synthesis. However, most existing works focus on how to synthesize normal human voice with high signal-to-noise ratio, neglecting individuals' pathological voice disorder in speech interaction. In this work, we propose a non-linear voice repair vocoder for pathological vowels and sentences, which takes the pathological speech as input and generates high-quality repaired speech. Our approach is specifically designed to enhance the speech quality and intel
