Social anxiety, voice confrontation and voice recognition: A bilingual exploration.

Many people dislike the sound of their voices, especially when listening back to audio recordings (voice confrontation). Previous research reports that disliking the sound of one's voice is associated with elevated levels of social anxiety. The present study investigated the relationship between social anxiety and voice dislike and voice misrecognition among a bilingual population: Arabic (L1) and English (L2). Participants (N = 176) completed self-report measures of social anxiety and own voice liking. Additionally, they performed a novel own voice recognition task, assessing their ability to

Voice Recognition in Face-Blind Patients.

Right or bilateral anterior temporal damage can impair face recognition, but whether this is an associative variant of prosopagnosia or part of a multimodal disorder of person recognition is an unsettled question, with implications for cognitive and neuroanatomic models of person recognition. We assessed voice perception and short-term recognition of recently heard voices in 10 subjects with impaired face recognition acquired after cerebral lesions. All 4 subjects with apperceptive prosopagnosia due to lesions limited to fusiform cortex had intact voice discrimination and recognition. One subj

Effects of experience on fetal voice recognition.

The ability of human fetuses to recognize their own mother's voice was examined. Sixty term fetuses were assigned to one of two conditions during which they were exposed to a tape recording of their mother or a female stranger reading a passage. Voice stimuli were delivered through a loudspeaker held approximately 10 cm above the maternal abdomen and played at an average of 95 dB SPL. Each condition consisted of three 2-min periods: no stimulus, voice (mother or stranger), and no stimulus. Fetal heart rate increased in response to the mother's voice and decreased in response to the stranger's;

Human voice recognition depends on language ability.

The ability to recognize people by their voice is an important social behavior. Individuals differ in how they pronounce words, and listeners may take advantage of language-specific knowledge of speech phonology to facilitate recognizing voices. Impaired phonological processing is characteristic of dyslexia and thought to be a basis for difficulty in learning to read. We tested voice-recognition abilities of dyslexic and control listeners for voices speaking listeners' native language or an unfamiliar language. Individuals with dyslexia exhibited impaired voice-recognition abilities compared w

Research on Pathological Voice Recognition Based on XGBoost.

With the continuous growth of human social communication, the number of people suffering from voice disorders is also increasing. Due to the objective and non-invasive advantages of acoustic detection methods for pathological voice, the use of speech signal analysis for pathological voice recognition has become a research hotspot. This article first selected 101 continuous vowels /a/ from the German SVD database as the research object. Secondly, using wavelet packet technology for time-frequency analysis, four nonlinear dynamic parameters, namely approximate entropy, sample entropy, fuzzy entr

Two cases of selective developmental voice-recognition impairments.

Recognizing other individuals is an essential skill in humans and in other species. Over the last decade, it has become increasingly clear that person-identity recognition abilities are highly variable. Roughly 2% of the population has developmental prosopagnosia, a congenital deficit in recognizing others by their faces. It is currently unclear whether developmental phonagnosia, a deficit in recognizing others by their voices, is equally prevalent, or even whether it actually exists. Here, we aimed to identify cases of developmental phonagnosia. We collected more than 1,000 data sets from sel

Adults with dyslexia have a deficit in voice recognition.

A group of 7 dyslexic students and 8 nondyslexic students matched for age and IQ were tested on recognition of computer-presented voices and faces. Although face recognition showed a ceiling effect which prevented any solid conclusions being drawn from this task, the dyslexic group were significantly impaired on the recognition of voices.

Ability for voice recognition is a marker for dyslexia in children.

A recent voice recognition experiment conducted by Perrachione, Del Tufo, and Gabrieli (2011) revealed that, in normal adult readers, the accuracy at identifying human voices was better in the participants' mother tongue than in an unfamiliar language, while this difference was absent in a group of adults with dyslexia. This pattern favored a view of dyslexia as due to "fundamentally impoverished native-language phonological representations." To further examine this issue, we conducted two voice recognition experiments, one with children with/without dyslexia, and the other with adults with/wi

Temporal voice areas exist in autism spectrum disorder but are dysfunctional for voice identity recognition.

The ability to recognise the identity of others is a key requirement for successful communication. Brain regions that respond selectively to voices exist in humans from early infancy on. Currently, it is unclear whether dysfunction of these voice-sensitive regions can explain voice identity recognition impairments. Here, we used two independent functional magnetic resonance imaging studies to investigate voice processing in a population that has been reported to have no voice-sensitive regions: autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Our results refute the earlier report that individuals with ASD have

Obligatory and facultative brain regions for voice-identity recognition.

Recognizing the identity of others by their voice is an important skill for social interactions. To date, it remains controversial which parts of the brain are critical structures for this skill. Based on neuroimaging findings, standard models of person-identity recognition suggest that the right temporal lobe is the hub for voice-identity recognition. Neuropsychological case studies, however, reported selective deficits of voice-identity recognition in patients predominantly with right inferior parietal lobe lesions. Here, our aim was to work towards resolving the discrepancy between neuroima

Voice recognition and aphasia: can computers understand aphasic speech?

PURPOSE: This preliminary investigation of the use of voice recognition software by people with aphasia presents a new method of training the software, which allows the aphasic user to by-pass the linguistically demanding standard training. It examines how accurately voice recognition software performed with aphasic speech and language as compared to that of control subjects. METHOD: Five non-impaired controls and six participants with aphasia used a vocabulary of 50 words and 24 phrases to train the software over a maximum of five sessions. For the people with aphasia baseline assessments pr

Neuropsychological impairments in the recognition of faces, voices, and personal names.

In order to determine the dissociability of face, voice, and personal name recognition, we studied the performance of 36 brain-lesioned patients and 20 control subjects. Participants performed familiarity decisions for portraits, voice samples, and written names of celebrities and unfamiliar people. In those patients who displayed significant impairments in any of these tests, the specificity of these impairments was tested using corresponding object recognition tests (with pictures of objects, environmental sounds, or written common words as stimuli). The results showed that 58% of the patien

Impairment of voice and face recognition in patients with hemispheric damage.

Voice and face recognition were tested in 21 left- and 9 right-hemisphere-damaged patients. Test materials were photographs and recordings of famous political and entertainment personalities. Pathological face recognition (prosopagnosia) and voice recognition (phonagnosia) were both significantly more prevalent in the right-hemisphere group. Only one instance of prosopagnosia and one of phonagnosia were observed in the left-hemisphere group, all of whom were aphasic. Of the right-hemisphere cases, there were four instances of each agnosia, with three patients showing a dual impairment. These f

Voice Emotion Recognition by Mandarin-Speaking Children with Cochlear Implants.

OBJECTIVES: Emotional expressions are very important in social interactions. Children with cochlear implants can have voice emotion recognition deficits due to device limitations. Mandarin-speaking children with cochlear implants may face greater challenges than those speaking nontonal languages; the pitch information is not well preserved in cochlear implants, and such children could benefit from child-directed speech, which carries more exaggerated distinctive acoustic cues for different emotions. This study investigated voice emotion recognition, using both adult-directed and child-directed

Understanding the mechanisms of familiar voice-identity recognition in the human brain.

Humans have a remarkable skill for voice-identity recognition: most of us can remember many voices that surround us as 'unique'. In this review, we explore the computational and neural mechanisms which may support our ability to represent and recognise a unique voice-identity. We examine the functional architecture of voice-sensitive regions in the superior temporal gyrus/sulcus, and bring together findings on how these regions may interact with each other, and additional face-sensitive regions, to support voice-identity processing. We also contrast findings from studies on neurotypicals and c

The Impact of Dysphonic Voice Quality on Children's Vowel Recognition in Noise.

PURPOSE: This study tested whether dysphonic voice quality reduces vowel recognition in noise in school-age children compared to that in adults. We also examined whether perceptual and acoustic indices of dysphonia, which included Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice (CAPE-V) ratings and cepstral peak prominence (CPP), could predict recognition accuracy across listeners. METHOD: Participants were 26 children (aged 8-17 years, M = 12.8) and 13 adults (aged 18-21 years, M = 20.6), all native English speakers with normal hearing. Listeners identified 11 American English vowels in an

Voice recognition and altered connectivity in schizophrenic patients with auditory hallucinations.

Auditory verbal hallucination (AVH) is a pathological hallmark of schizophrenia; however, their neural basis is unclear. Voice identity is an important phenomenological feature of AVHs. Certain voice identity recognition deficits are specific to schizophrenic patients with AVHs. We tested our hypothesis that among schizophrenia patients with hallucination, dysfunctional voice identity recognition is associated with poor functional integration in the neural networks involved in the evaluation of voice identity. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during a voice recognition task,
