Injuries among world-class professional beach volleyball players. The Fédération Internationale de Volleyball beach volleyball injury study.

BACKGROUND: Very little is known about the injury characteristics of beach volleyball. PURPOSE: To describe the incidence and pattern of injuries among professional male and female beach volleyball players. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study--retrospective injury recall and prospective registration. METHODS: Injuries occurring over a 7.5-week interval of the summer season were retrospectively registered by interviewing 178 of the 188 participating players (95%) in the 2001 Beach Volleyball World Championships. Injuries were also cataloged prospectively during five of the tournaments held during thi

Volleyball-Related Injuries.

Volleyball is a highly popular women's sport played recreationally and competitively by a wide variety of ages. Game play requires agility, power, flexibility, and stamina to succeed. Although injury rate is lower compared to other team sports, athletes are still predisposed to acute injuries of the ankle and overuse injuries of the shoulder and knee. Injury patterns differ based on player subspecialty and playing surface. Most injuries are amenable to nonoperative treatment and require little time removed from play.

Injuries in elite volleyball.

During the 1993-1994 volleyball season, injuries to players in the two Danish elite divisions were registered by means of a questionnaire survey. Eighty per cent of the players returned the questionnaire. A total of 70 female players reported 79 injuries and 67 male players reported 98 injuries, representing an overall incidence of 3.8 injuries per player per 1000 volleyball hours played. The injury incidence was the same for female and male players. Most injuries occurred in spiking (32%) and in blocking (28%). The injuries were predominantly either acute injuries to fingers (21%) and ankles

Hand injuries in volleyball.

We studied the long-term sequelae of hand injuries as a result of playing volleyball. In a retrospective study, 226 patients with injuries of the hand who were seen over a 5-year period at our Trauma Department, were investigated. Females accounted for 66% of all injuries. The mean age was 26 years, with a peak in the age group of 15 to 29 years. Sprains and strains were observed most frequently (39%), followed by fractures (25%) and contusions (16%). The fingers were involved in 44% of the cases. Most injuries of the hand occurred in recreational players. Recreational players had more left-si

Knee injuries in volleyball.

The knee is the most frequent site of injury in volleyball players. More than 40% of high level players suffer overuse injuries during this activity; this particularly painful syndrome is caused by the amount of jumping typical in volleyball play, and in its training which aims at strengthening the quadriceps muscle. In volleyball players the extensor apparatus is subject to continuously high stress and the bone tendon junction, being the weakest point, is susceptible to lesion. The prevention and treatment of 'jumper's knee' requires a high degree of cooperation among trainers, doctors and at

Musculoskeletal Injuries in Volleyball Players.

Volleyball is a very popular sport worldwide, and both the indoor and outdoor versions are played at the Olympics. The several different positions have unique associated injuries. Some positions require fast movements and reflexes; others require strength and power. Given the repetitive jumping and shoulder movements, some of the positions are susceptible to chronic overuse injuries. Others are related to landing awkwardly or taking powerful hits/blocks from the ball. Indoor volleyball, played on a firm surface, has more of an impact on players compared with beach volleyball played on sand. Th

Suprascapular neuropathy in volleyball players.

Entrapment neuropathy of the suprascapular nerve (SNE), although a recognised clinical entity, is a relatively rare cause of shoulder pain and subjective weakness in the athlete involved in overhead sports like volleyball and badminton. This study deals with the presentation and management of four unusual cases of suprascapular nerve entrapment in volleyball players. Four male volleyball players presented to our department with intractable shoulder pain and subjective sensation of shoulder weakness. They all had visible wasting of both supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles, together with wea

Suprascapular neuropathy in volleyball players.

BACKGROUND: Suprascapular nerve entrapment with isolated paralysis of the infraspinatus muscle is uncommon. However, this pathology has been reported in volleyball players. Despite a lack of scientific evidence, excessive strain on the nerve is often cited as a possible cause of this syndrome. Previous research has shown a close association between shoulder range of motion and strain on the suprascapular nerve. No clinical studies have so far been designed to examine the association between excessive shoulder mobility and the presence of this pathology. AIM: To study the possible association

Biomechanical analysis of volleyball overhead pass.

In volleyball, the overhead pass is an important skill for passing a ball and making a set to attackers. In the present study, we analysed the overhead pass motion and involved muscle activity with special attention to the stretch-shortening cycle (SSC). Electromyogram was recorded from the wrist and elbow joint flexors and extensors. The movement period when the ball touched the hand was divided into the pull and push phases with the moment when the ball was at the lowest position. In the pull phase, although the wrists were extended, the activity of wrist flexor muscle was higher than the ex

[Ankle sprain during a volleyball game].

A 27-year old woman was admitted to the emergency room after her left ankle rolled inward during a volleyball game. On physical examination a bony prominence on the lateral side of the left foot was noticeable, without neurovascular injury. An X-ray (anterior-posterior view) showed a subtalar dislocation without associated fractures.

Factors correlated with volleyball spike velocity.

BACKGROUND: Spike effectiveness represents a determining element in volleyball. To compete at a high level, the player must, in particular, produce a spike characterized by a high ball velocity. HYPOTHESIS: Some muscular and physical features could influence ball velocity during the volleyball spike. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study. METHODS: A total of 19 male volleyball players from the 2 highest Belgian national divisions underwent an isokinetic assessment of the dominant shoulder and elbow. Ball velocity performance (radar gun) during a spike test, morphological feature, and j

Beach volleyball and Cutaneous Larva Migrans.

Cutaneous larva migrans can affect even athletes who travelled to play beach volleyball in Zanzibar. We describe a cluster of CLM infections in travellers who contracted the disease during their trip to Africa, rather than bringing a volleyball trophy. Despite presenting typical changes, all of them were misdiagnosed.

De Quervain disease in volleyball players.

BACKGROUND: Chronic inflammatory tendon diseases in athletes are frequent, and they often result from modifications in normal kinematics of a tendon associated with a patient's anatomical determinants. De Quervain stenosing tenosynovitis is an inflammatory disease of tendons of the first dorsal compartment of the wrist. There is no literature about this disease concerning professional volleyball players. HYPOTHESIS: Limited, multiple trauma on the dorsal radial portion of the wrist, associated with long training times, can be involved in the pathogenetic process of de Quervain disease in prof

Comparative biomechanical analysis of volleyball court shoes during sport-specific tasks in competitive adolescent female volleyball players.

INTRODUCTION: High-level volleyball requires efficient movement patterns, force attenuation, and rapid, multidirectional movements. While players may exhibit inherent biomechanical risk factors, investigating how footwear affects female athletes' movement is essential for developing a comprehensive understanding of determinants contributing to injury risk. The purpose of this study was to identify biomechanical differences associated with three volleyball court shoes. METHODS: Twenty-nine healthy female volleyball players (15.52 ± 1.47 years, 168.72 ± 5.72 cm, 62.44 ± 7.71 kg) completed a cou

Epidemiology of Common Injuries in the Volleyball Athlete.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the recent literature regarding the epidemiology of injuries in the volleyball athlete across all levels of play and to discuss areas where further studies are needed. RECENT FINDINGS: Injury epidemiology for volleyball at the collegiate and high school level has been supported by a longitudinal injury surveillance program through the NCAA Injury Surveillance System (NCAA ISS) and High School Reporting Information Online (HS RIO) for the past 30 years. The creation of the FIVB Injury Surveillance System (FIVB ISS) in 2010 shows promise in advancing the literature

Strategies for the prevention of volleyball related injuries.

Although the overall injury rate in volleyball and beach volleyball is relatively low compared with other team sports, injuries do occur in a discipline specific pattern. Epidemiological research has revealed that volleyball athletes are, in general, at greatest risk of acute ankle injuries and overuse conditions of the knee and shoulder. This structured review discusses both the known and suspected risk factors and potential strategies for preventing the most common volleyball related injuries: ankle sprains, patellar tendinopathy, and shoulder overuse.

[Causes and prevention of typical volleyball injuries].

A survey conducted among 224 volleyball players in the German Federal League revealed a high number of serious injuries. The upper ankle joint (55.1% of all serious injuries) and the fingers (22.4%) were most commonly affected. The principal cause of the accidents was a collision with an opponent at the net. There is a close relationship between the player's position, the part he plays in the game and the frequency of injury. Aside from other measures a change of one of the international volleyball rules would represent a suitable method of preventing such injuries.

Volleyball and other analogies: a response to Englert.

Englert and her colleagues have contributed much to our knowledge about effective writing instruction. They have demonstrated that interventions that make explicit the writing process and text structures are successful with students with learning disabilities as well as those without. Englert attributes this success to the holistic, social, and interactive nature of the instruction. However, one must keep in mind that CSIW was a package approach that included other validated instructional components. CSIW teachers presented conceptual models, used examples and nonexamples to illustrate text st

Injury risk management plan for volleyball athletes.

Volleyball is an increasingly popular team sport. As with any competitive sport, there is an inherent risk of injury that must be recognized and collaboratively managed. This article provides a practical approach to the management of volleyball injuries within a team or organization. A brief review of the epidemiological data is presented which establishes (i) ankle sprain, (ii) shoulder overuse injury, (iii) patella tendinopathy, and (iv) anterior cruciate ligament injury as the primary injuries to address amongst these athletes. The interaction of modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors f
