Congenital vomer agenesis is a very rare condition. Usually, it is discovered incidentally. Nasal and otologic diseases accompany the cases. In this article, we report two cases of isolated congenital vomer agenesis who were admitted to our clinic with complaint of nasal obstruction. On endoscopic examination, deviated septum and inferior turbinate hypertrophy were observed in both patients. One patient was performed septoplasty, inferior turbinate radiofrequency, and functional endoscopic sinus surgery. Other patient was advised follow-up since the patient did not consent to operation.

Myxomas of bone in the head and neck are rare tumors. We present a 68 year old female with pain and epistaxis who was found to have the first reported case of a myxoma arising within the vomer bone. Some atypical magnetic resonance imaging features are described, however, myxoma imaging features are often non-specific and typically evoke a benign differential diagnosis. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice.

Six cases of congenital defect of the vomer, a rare nasal anomaly, are reported. All 6 patients visited Kobe University Hospital with other complaints, and the anomaly was incidentally detected. In all cases, the nasal septum showed a defect at the posteroinferior portion that appeared to coincide with the location of the vomer. None of the patients had a past history of nasal trauma, nasal surgery, drug abuse, or infectious disease. This anomaly may be attributable to an embryological disorder based on an immature ossification center of the vomer.

Congenital anomalies of the nose is comprised of a broad spectrum of different types of malformations ranging from a minor alar cleft to total agenesia. Reports about congenital septal defects are few in literature. In this manuscript, we report on a 19-year-old male patient with a congenital defect on the posteroinferior portion of the septum. The defect was diagnosed by endoscopy and confirmed by computed tomography. This defect probably occurred because of an arrest in development of vomeral bone. The literature on this rare occurrence is reviewed, and the significance of the patient is dis

UNLABELLED: Numerous publications on the classification of the nasal septum deformity (deviation) are mainly related to the anterior septal parts and the development of this pathology in the adult population. None of the available classifications contain the detail of the vomer deformities, required to select an algorithm for subsequent doctor's actions, as well as considering the clinical and anatomical features of this zone in children with congenital choanal atresia (CCA) or in its isolated deformity.
OBJECTIVE: To develop the classification of the vomer's deformities variants based on an

OBJECTIVE: To present a new comprehensive and simple classification of vomerine flaps for palatoplasty.
DESIGN: This classification has been developed on the basis of a literature search and our clinical experience. The vomerine flaps have been classified into three types, each with A and B subtypes.
PATIENTS, PARTICIPANTS: Vomerine tissue has been used in more than 1000 palatoplasties over the past 17 years. The analysis includes 678 cleft palate patients for whom detailed records were available. Type II-A vomerine flaps were used most commonly in unilateral cleft palate patients, whereas T

We describe an unusual case of intraosseous hemangioma of the vomer. The lesion had a characteristic radiographic appearance, especially on the computed tomographic scan. The two most interesting points in this case were the rarity as a site for the occurrence of hemangioma and the successful extirpation of the tumor via the Le Fort 1 osteotomy approach without embolization of the feeding vessels. The benefits of this approach included the wide surgical field afforded deep in the midface region, which was important for controlling bleeding, as well as the complete extirpation of the tumor.

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is a common congenital anomaly. Efficient surgical management of CLP is challenging in severe cases with wide clefts. Use of primary vomer flap simultaneous with cleft lip repair is effective in some cases, but remains a challenging topic.
METHODS: This study evaluated 81 non-syndromic CLP patients with extensive palatal cleft and no other underlying condition. Thirty-nine patients (group A) who were infants over 6 months of age underwent primary vomer flap during lip repair to decrease the size of their extensive palatal cleft. The results in this group

INTRODUCTION: Congenital vomer agenesis is an extremely rare condition in which the vomer bone does not fully develop, which can lead to septal perforation.
CASE REPORT: We report two cases with a defect in the vomer bone in the posteroinferior portion of the septum, found accidentally while performing a pre-operative CT scan for nasal obstruction evaluation. They were diagnosed with congenital vomer agenesis.
CONCLUSION: There are afew reports of vomer agenesis in literatures. By increasing usage of sinonasal endoscopic examination,we expect to address more cases in the future.

Malformation of the inner nose is often found in conjunction with different types of cleft palate or may be seen with severe and complex craniofacial anomalies. Among such malformations, however, isolated vomer aplasia is rarely reported in the literature. This study sets forth our findings that congenital vomeral defect of the nasal septum is an isolated disorder with hereditary characteristics. Between 2001 and 2009, nine cases of isolated congenital vomeral bone defect were detected on endoscopic examination of patients referred to our clinic with nasal and otologic complaints. PURPOSE: Vomeral malformation may lead to a posteroinferior septal defect (PISD). It is usually found incidentally, without any characteristic symptoms. The purpose of this study was to evaluate its clinical implications.
METHODS: In this study, we included 18 patients with PISD after reviewing paranasal sinus computed tomography scans and medical records of 2655 patients. We evaluated the shape of the hard palate and measured the distances between the anterior nasal spine (A), the posterior end of the hard palate (P), the posterior point of the vomer fused with the palate (V), the lowest mar

The purpose of the present study was to establish normal prenatal development standards for the nasal and vomeral bones, both formed by intramembranous ossification in the membrane covering the cartilaginous nasal capsule. The study is based upon a combination of macroscopic (devisceration and radiography) and microscopic (histology) analyses on 62 normal human fetuses from spontaneous and induced abortions, ranging in gestational age from 9 to 24 weeks, representing crown-rump lengths (CRL) from 33 to 225 mm. Special attention was paid to the onset of bone formation in relation to other matur

The nasal septum consists of the quadrangular septal cartilage, the maxillary and palatine bone crests, the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone, and the vomer. Congenital agenesis of the vomer is a rare condition. This case involves a 29-year-old male who presented to our clinic with alternating bilateral nasal obstruction and no history of allergic symptoms. Examination revealed clear bilateral osteomeatal complexes without polyposis or discharge. A CT scan of the sinuses showed a right-sided septal spur and confirmed the absence of the vomer bone. This case was reported at King Abdulaziz

Teratomas are rare germ cell neoplasms derived from the 3 germinal layers (ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm). Nasopharyngeal teratoma is a very rare teratoma arising anywhere from the oronasal cavity, regarded as an expanding, avity filling lesion, with a high mortality rate because of severe airway obstruction, especially in the neonatal period and make up only 2% of all teratomas. The authors present a case of an infant girl with a single, finger-like, hairy teratoma arising from the vomer and protruding from the mouth with bilateral complete cleft palate, cleft lip, and cleft alveolus. Despite the lack of consensus regarding the treatment of labio-palatal clefts, each treatment protocol is the expression of an individual perspective that accumulates the experience of each multidisciplinary group, which all pursue the same goal: to achieve adequate language development with the lowest possible impact on facial growth. To achieve this, a management scheme has been developed, this exploits vomer flaps for the closure of palatal clefts and limits dissections in the palatine segments. Modifications are presented in the design and dissection of vomer flaps, so as to use the larges

Dimensions of certain parts of the orofacial skeleton and vomer were obtained by a bioanthropologic measurement for which native preparations of whole and parasagitally sawed up skulls were used. The application of a harmonic frame of the skull and the main dimensions of the vomer allowed the construction of an ideal model of the vomer using Araldit B. The photoelasticimetric procedure and pressure load to the model were used for the determination of possible pressure tensions, if any, occurring during mastification, namely the share of the vomer in the transfer of these tensions to the base o

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of vomer position and prevalence of periodontal dehiscence in patients who underwent surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE). The null hypotheses were the following: (1) vomer position in the coronal plane does not influence the degree of skeletal and dental expansion; and (2) there is no association between expansion, periodontal dehiscence and vomer position.
METHODS: Twenty-one patients were evaluated before treatment (T0) and immediately after SARPE expansion (T1). After SARPE, the vomer was in the right side in 11 patients and in the left in 10

The vomer is an important tooth-bearing cranial bone in the lungless salamanders (Caudata: Plethodontidae) that serves different functional roles in aquatic versus terrestrial feeding. Vomerine tooth rows that run parallel with the maxillary teeth are thought to help grasp prey while expelling water from the mouth, while posterior extensions of the tooth row may help terrestrial taxa bring prey down the throat. We hypothesize that these two general morphological types will correlate with the habitat (aquatic vs. terrestrial) of adult salamanders. Alternatively, variation in form may be due to
