The vomeronasal organ of the cat.

The vomeronasal organ of the cat was studied macroscopically, by light microscopy and by immunohistochemical techniques. Special attention was paid to the general distribution of the various soft tissue components of this organ (duct, glands, connective tissue, blood vessels and nerves.) Examination of series of transverse sections showed that the wall of the vomeronasal duct bears 44 different types of epithelium: simple columnar in the caudal part of the duct, respiratory and receptor respectively on the lateral and medial walls of the middle part of the duct, and stratified squamous rostral

The vomeronasal system of the mink, Mustela vison. I. The vomeronasal organ.

The vomeronasal organ (VNO) of the mink is restricted to the area of the Fissura palatina and thus always topographically related to the Ductus incisivus (DI). The VNO and DI have also a functional relation because the vomeronasal duct ends in the incisive duct. On the other hand, as the DI has its mouth in the Papilla incisiva there is a communication between the VNO and the oral cavity. The vomeronasal cartilage, approximately in 1/6 of its length, wraps completely the parenchyma of the VNO whose main structure is the vomeronasal duct, with two different epithelia: sensory receptor in the me

The vomeronasal organ of Lemur catta.

The vomeronasal organ (VNO), also known as the Jacobson's organ, is a bilateral chemosensory organ found at the base of the nasal cavity specialized for the detection of higher-molecular weight (non-volatile) chemostimuli. It has been linked to pheromone detection. The VNO has been well studied in nocturnal lemurs and lorises, but poorly studied in diurnal/cathemeral species despite the large repertoire of olfactory behaviors noted in species such as Lemur catta. Here, the VNO and associated structures were studied microanatomically in one adult female and one adult male L. catta. Traditional

[The existence vomeronasal organ in adult humans].

The influence of chemical substances (feromones) on human emotional and physical condition has fascinated psychologists, sexuologists and laryngologists since centurie. Literature conveys inconsistent information on vomeronasal organ (VNO) occurrence in humans. This organ is often called Jacobson's, and 2 symmetrical openings leading into it, located on both sides of septum, are called Ruyasch's ducts. The aim of the study was to analyze vomeronasal organ occurrence in humans in relation to age and sex. The study was conducted in a group of 634 patients, aged 18-80 years. All patients underwen

Structure and function of the vomeronasal organ.

The vomeronasal organ (VNO) is a complex of different structures that forward specific chemical signals commonly called pheromones to the central nervous system. In some macrosmatic animals, e.g. rodents, the VNO consists of vomeronasal receptor neurons located in a sensory epithelium of the vomeronasal duct, their afferent axons connecting the duct with the accessory olfactory bulb, associated glands and ganglionic cells in the nasal septal mucosa. The organ's main task is to influence mating and social behavior. In humans, the VNO does not exist, at least not in its complexity. Although deve

Vicia villosa agglutinin inhibits the fasciculation of vomeronasal axons in fetal rat vomeronasal organ culture.

The vomeronasal organ of rat was cultured from embryonic 15-day littermates. During 4-8 days in vitro, vomeronasal axons originating from the explants of vomeronasal organ formed 2-3 large fascicles. When Vicia villosa agglutinin (VVA) was added to the culture medium, fasciculation of the vomeronasal axons was inhibited. The timing of addition and the duration of the presence of VVA were related to the inhibition of fasciculation of vomeronasal axons. Glycocojugates that bind with the VVA may therefore play an important role in the fasciculation of developing vomeronasal axons.

[Early embryonic formation of the human vomeronasal organ].

We studied the origin and development of the vomeronasal system in early human embryos of 10-18 mm crown-rump length under normal and pathological conditions. The formation of the vomeronasal organ from the vomeronasal groove and placode in a 10-mm embryo is described. We propose that the vomeronasal cavity originates in the schizocoel way. We studied the development of the vomeronasal and olfactory nerves. Attention is paid to the development of the nasolacrimal duct and the epithelial plug. The possible use of the vomeronasal system by embryos during the first seven weeks of development is d

The vomeronasal organ: History, development, morphology, and functional neuroanatomy.

The human vomeronasal organ (VNO) is an accessory olfactory organ located on the anteroinferior part of the nasal septum, 1.5-2.5cm from the nostrils. Its main role is pheromone reception and, through its anatomical connections with the central nervous system, especially parts of the hypothalamus, modulation of both social and sexual behavior, although these relations have been established only in nonprimates and very little is yet established for the structure and function of the human VNO. Morphologically, the human VNO is a pit or duct-shaped structure, comprised of three cellular layers-ba

Morphological and immunohistochemical study of the rabbit vomeronasal organ.

The characterization of the rabbit mammary pheromone, which is sensed by the main olfactory system, has made this species a unique model for the study of pheromonal communication in mammals. This discovery has brought attention to the global understanding of chemosensory communication in this species. Chemocommunication is mediated by two distinct organs located in the nasal cavity, the main olfactory epithelium and the vomeronasal organ (VNO). However, there is a lack of knowledge about the vomeronasal system in rabbits. To understand the role of this system, an exhaustive anatomical and hist

Structure of vomeronasal organ (Jacobson organ) in male Camelus Domesticus Var. dromedaris persica.

The vomeronasal organ (VNO) is a tubular structure in the roof of nasal cavity. The important role of this organ is olfaction of sexual odour. In this study, position, anatomical structure and histology of VNO in Iranian camels (camelus domesticus var. dromedaris persica) were determined. Fourteen healthy male camel heads were collected from an industrial slaughterhouse in Tehran, Iran, for anatomical and histological studies (seven each). The length of VNO and width of dental pad and the number and width of palatine crests were measured. For anatomical studies, the mandible was removed, and m

Development of substance P immunoreactivity in the mouse vomeronasal organ.

We investigated the development of substance P immunoreactivity in mouse vomeronasal organs in embryos, juveniles, and adults. In all stages, substance P fibers were found in the receptor-free epithelial area, but never in the neuroepithelium. Substance P fibers were found sparsely in the lamina propria of 15-day-old embryos. Although buds of the vomeronasal glands in the cavernous tissue were observed in 17-day-old embryos, and gradually grew in size and numbers, the substance P fibers around them decreased after about the 13th day. Thus, substance P may be a trophic factor for the developmen

Vomeronasal organs and nerves of Jacobson in the human fetus.

The vomeronasal organs and nerves of Jacobson were found on both sides of the nasal septum in a 28-week human fetus. The vomeronasal organ in the human is a tubular structure with an opening into the nasal cavity anteriorly and closed posterior end. The vomeronasal nerve is distributed equally to the medial and lateral aspects of the organ, courses along the nasal septum and goes through the cartilaginous cribriform plate with the olfactory nerve. The cellular configuration of the vomeronasal organ is similar to the olfactory neuroepithelium. No areas of receptor-free epithelium were found in

Mechanisms underlying pre- and postnatal development of the vomeronasal organ.

The vomeronasal organ (VNO) is sensory organ located in the ventral region of the nasal cavity in rodents. The VNO develops from the olfactory placode during the secondary invagination of olfactory pit. The embryonic vomeronasal structure appears as a neurogenic area where migratory neuronal populations like endocrine gonadotropin-releasing hormone-1 (GnRH-1) neurons form. Even though embryonic vomeronasal structures are conserved across most vertebrate species, many species including humans do not have a functional VNO after birth. The vomeronasal epithelium (VNE) of rodents is composed of tw

The vomeronasal organ: primary role in mouse chemosensory gender recognition.

Four experiments were conducted to determine the chemosensory modality that supports ultrasonic courtship vocalizations by male mice to females and to chemosignals from females. Both removal of the olfactory bulbs (Experiment 1) and removal of the vomeronasal organ (Experiments 2-4) produced similar deficits in the pattern of ultrasonic vocalizations elicited by conspecifics or their odors. Removal of the vomeronasal organ did not impair the ability to locate food buried under cage shavings. These results are consistent with the notion that the analysis of food related odors is subserved by ol

Histological and ultrastructural characteristics of the primordial vomeronasal organ in lungfish.

Many vertebrates have two anatomically distinct olfactory organs--the olfactory epithelium and the vomeronasal organ--to detect chemicals such as general odorants and pheromones in their environment. The vomeronasal organ is not present in fish but is present in vertebrates of a higher order than amphibians. Among all extant fishes, the lungfish is considered to be genetically and phylogenetically closest to tetrapods. In this study, we examined the olfactory organs of African lungfish, Protopterus annectens, by lectin histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, and transmission electron microscopy.

Fate and Development of Human Vomeronasal Organ - A Microscopic Fetal Study.

INTRODUCTION: The existence of Vomeronasal organ in human is a controversial subject. Presence of Vomeronasal organ and its structure was not reported in standard text books. The presence of Vomeronasal organ in fetal life is doubtful. Hence identification of the organ by histological examination was planned. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A study was conducted on resected specimens of nasal septum obtained from 45 spontaneously aborted fetuses from Obstetrics and Gynaecology department, PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Coimbatore, after ethical clearance. RESULTS: The histological st

Ion conductances in supporting cells isolated from the mouse vomeronasal organ.

The vomeronasal organ (VNO) is a chemosensory structure involved in the detection of pheromones in most mammals. The VNO sensory epithelium contains both neurons and supporting cells. Data suggest that vomeronasal neurons represent the pheromonal transduction sites, whereas scarce information is available on the functional properties of supporting cells. To begin to understand their role in VNO physiology, we have characterized with patch-clamp recording techniques the electrophysiological properties of supporting cells isolated from the neuroepithelium of the mouse VNO. Supporting cells were
