BACKGROUND: The current study investigated the association between breastfeeding and adult weight distribution using an emerging indicator of weight distribution, the waist-to-height ratio (WHtR).
METHODS: The study sample consisted of two subsamples of individuals that were part of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. One sample (n = 1,179) consisted of individuals from the sibling pair data. A second sample (n = 4,648) consisted of individuals that were not part of the paired data. Regression models were constructed to establish if there was a relationship between breastfee

BACKGROUND AND AIM: National Institutes of Clinical Excellence (NICE) "at-risk" guidelines (waist-to-height ratio (WC/HT) < 0.5) over penalizes shorter adults and fails to alert taller adults who may be at risk. The aim is to assess whether the "at-risk" guidelines recommended by NICE are appropriate for children, by assessing whether their WCs increase in proportion to their height, thus obeying the principle of "geometric similarity.".
METHODS AND RESULTS: Cross-sectional study including 11018 participants aged 7-17 years. We assessed whether the children's waist circumferences (WC) increas

BACKGROUND: Waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) are all independent predictors of cardio-metabolic risk and therefore important in HIV/AIDS patients on antiretroviral therapy at risk of increased visceral adiposity. This study aimed to assess the extent of agreement between these parameters and the body mass index (BMI), as anthropometric parameters and in classifying cardio-metabolic risk in HIV/AIDS patients.
METHODS: A secondary analysis of data from a cross-sectional study involving 200 HIV/AIDS patients was done. Anthropometric parameters w

PURPOSE: Obesity is among the known risk factors for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). In this study, our aim was to investigate the correlation of waist-to-height ratio, an indicator of central obesity, with presence and severity of OSAS; to compare the use of this ratio with the use of waist circumference and body mass index (BMI); and to determine OSAS-related cutoff values.
METHODS: The patient records were retrospectively analyzed for whom a polysomnography was conducted at our sleep. Sex, age, Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI), waist circumference, height, and BMI values of those patien

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: Obesity plays a central role in metabolic syndrome. Obesity indexes are important in clinical work. In the present study, we sought to determine the relationships between obesity indexes and metabolic risk factors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied 11,568 participants over 35 years. Body mass index, waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and waist-to-hip ratio were measured and calculated. To compare the predictive ability of the obesity indexes in diagnosing multiple metabolic risk factors, the areas under receiver operating characteristic curves were calcu

OBJECTIVE: Hypertriglyceridemic waist (HW), hypertriglyceridemic waist-to-height ratio (HWHtR), and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) have been shown to be indicators of cardiometabolic risk factors. However, it is not clear which indicator is more suitable for children and adolescents. We aimed to investigate the relationship between HW, HWHtR, WHR, and cardiovascular risk factors clustering to determine the best screening tools for cardiometabolic risk in children and adolescents.
METHODS: This was a national cross-sectional study. Anthropometric and biochemical variables were assessed in approximat

BACKGROUND: Understanding the relationship between central adiposity and health outcomes in children is crucial for early prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) has emerged as a key anthropometric measure for predicting cardiovascular and metabolic health risks.
METHODS: The objective of this study was to investigate whether WHtR is associated with cardiovascular and metabolic risk markers, including HbA1c, CRP, lipid profiles, blood pressure, ferritin, and iron levels, in healthy children aged 6-12 years. The study further aimed to assess WHtR's potentia

OBJECTIVES: The current age- and sex-specific waist circumference (WC) reference for defining abdominal adiposity in Chinese children is quite complex. This study aimed to evaluate the optimal waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) thresholds based on the estimated WC references.
METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of data from 121,025 Chinese children aged 7-18 years collected in 2010 was performed. Optimal WHtR thresholds were selected by Youden's index using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, with the estimated references of WC in Chinese children used as the gold standard.

BACKGROUND: Central adiposity is a determinant of cardiometabolic risk in children and is not fully captured by body mass index (BMI). Waist circumference (WC) percentiles and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) are used indicators, but their comparative performance in preschool populations remains uncertain.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate central adiposity distribution across BMI categories, assess age-related differences in WHtR interpretability, and examine concordance between WC percentiles and WHtR in preschool children.
METHODS: As part of the Fair Play a Tavola project, 1,542 children were included.

BACKGROUND: Central and general obesity are commonly measured using tools like waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). However, the universally recognized cutoffs for these measures may be inadequate for individuals of Ethiopian descent. Due to the lack of universally applicable cutoffs, studies recommend tailoring the optimal screening thresholds to each population's specific characteristics. Therefore, this study aimed to determine body composition-based WC, WHR, and WHtR cutoffs for the healthy adult population of Ethiopi

BACKGROUND: The link between measures of adiposity and prevalent screen-detected diabetes (SDM) in Africa has been less well investigated. We assessed and compared the strength of association and discriminatory capability of measures of adiposity including body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), waist-hip-ratio (WHR) and waist-height-ratio (WHtR) for prevalent SDM risk in a sub-Saharan African population.
METHODS: Participants were 8663 adults free of diagnosed type 2 diabetes, who took part in the nationally representative Cameroon Burden of Diabetes (CAMBoD)

BACKGROUND: The waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), waist divided by height0.5(WHT.5R), and weight-adjusted waist index (WWI) are four anthropometric indices evaluating obesity, but the association with cardiovascular diseases in diabetic population remain unclear.
METHODS: We extracted data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES1999-2016),and 7000 patients with diabetes were eligible. Weighted logistic regression and weighted restricted cubic spline analyses were performed to explore the association between WC, WWI, WHtR, WTH.5R and the likeliho

BACKGROUND: Lean metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) can be overlooked in adults with a normal body mass index (BMI). We examined whether waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), a simple marker of central adiposity, was associated with prevalent lean MASLD and explored its relative contribution within an anthropometric and metabolic feature set.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study used National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2021-2023 data for exploratory model development (n = 770) and NHANES 2017-2020 data for independent validation (n = 809). Lean MASLD

BACKGROUND: Stroke poses a substantial threat to global public health. The triglyceride glucose-waist height ratio (TyG-WHtR), which incorporates the TyG metric with obesity-related WHtR, has demonstrated superior diagnostic and predictive value compared to the TyG index alone. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of in-depth exploration into the relationship between TyG-WHtR and stroke. This study seeks to address this gap by extracting information from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to elucidate the potential association between TyG-WHtR levels and stroke.

BACKGROUND: Although obesity is a well-known risk factor for various metabolic disorders, its impact on fracture risk remains uncertain. The inconsistency in findings may be due to the fact that most studies have relied solely on body mass index (BMI) as the measure of obesity. Other indices, such as waist circumference (WC) and the waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), have been suggested as better indicators of obesity. This study aimed to evaluate the association between obesity and fracture risk by using multiple obesity measures, including WHtR, WC and BMI, in a longitudinal cohort.
